There's some real freaks out there, and the internet affords them the ability to be both intimate and anonymous at the same time. The protection afforded you by having the internet in between you and the stranger that you might be interested in also allows the freakoids to reach out and poke you from behind a curtain of anonymity.
It works both ways, but the ignore button works like a champ. The thing to remember is that contact through this is only a portion of the story - body language contains about 70% of the meaning of a conversation, so you have to be careful not to assume that all the usual back-and-forth of email/chat/phone means that you have seen what there is to see. It can even backfire, since you are more willing to let your guard down when you finally do meet them in person, thus bypassing your normal security reflexes.
On the other hand, this is a great way to meet a much larger group of people than you would normally encounter in real life! Take advantage of that, but remember that your first meeting in person is just that - a first meeting! | |

Rustmouse, in reference to the above statement, I do not believe that there is anything intimate about sharing any type of sexual inuendo on the internet. It is virtual, Not real, Pretend. So many people think that sharing emails, web cam photos and phone conversation constitutes communication and relationship, but that is not the case. Like you said, body language, non spoken cues, facial expression and voice intonations are the biggest part of "real" communication. I do not know how people can mistake an online "thing" with the "real" thing. | |

People are often willing to let their guard down because they have this one-on-one contact with someone they don't really know. Because of the nature of this contact, they feel that they really 'know' the person on the other end of the line. It's close and informal, leading people to lower their guard, when they wouldn't normally. You see the news stories about these guys getting popped for meeting kids online and arranging to have sex with them - A real teenager wouldn't normally give some middle-aged guy the time of day, even one who was disturbed. Because this form of communication gives them a measure of intimacy (meaning close and informal contact) these predators use this to get past the normal defenses of their victim.
My point is that you simply don't know who is on the other end. This medium lets them in past your normal barriers - you wouldn't normally give them the time of day in a bar or somewhere else public, and they feel safe in spelling out whatever perverted stuff is going through their brain, because you aren't in range to slap them, throw a drink in their face or use pepper spray. There are no consequences for their behavior here, so they feel free to continue it... | |
