Xavery, good for you for deciding to finally get to the decluttering project! And also for taking on the "foster hound".
Just an idea, and not even sure if it's been mentioned at all as I'm guilty of not reading the entire thread, but...if you have clothing, household items of ANY kind, toiletries, or anything that might be useful to others, transition houses and shelters are always in need. You may already know this, but just in case. Then, you can feel great for recycling AND helping someone less fortunate out!

Thanks Lookin! I will keep that in mind. The only thing I am not throwing out are the dogs and a few other things.

Since my father died on June11th I've let my place really slide, starting this past weekend I've started slowly to take back my life and my home!

I agree with those of you who have suggested transition houses, and thrift stores. It's just a win/win situation, and often they will pick items up for you. You save money not taking it to the dump.

I am pretty balanced, I dislike clutter but I also dislike a home with no character. As long as you organize it's ok to have stuff, I think, just as long as it's not gross. But then I am in my late 30s and am in a total nesting phase. I'll never get rid of my old videogame systems and cartridges, noooo sir. I still play them, anyway!

I don't like really bare houses, they seem so cold. As long as it's not a mess, or dirty, I like the warmth of a house full of things the inhabitant likes. It is interesting to look at their things, and you get a sense of who they are as a person.

My design philosophy is that I would rather have one really nice set of dishes, than 2 or 3 kind of nice ones. Same with cutlery, teapot, all that. Decorating and renovating is one of my hobbies though.

Now how do one stop the clutter chain? I have jeans size 32 they are10 years old, but someday i may be able to fit in these, but I need a 36 and my list goes on and on, I live alone and have 3 full sets of dishes lol I need help, Dave

Dave,

Get a good female friend of yours to help you go through all your stuff and get rid of stuff that doesn't fit, you can't use, etc. I have done that for 2 bachelor friends of mine to great success! :)

I have found that two of the best ways to get rid of stuff taking up space in your house is to list it on Craigslist and if it sells, great, extra money to put into savings or if it doesn't sell, just bite the bullet and put it on Freecycle!

Freecycle is awesome, everyone is great and helps out others. Things don't end up in landfills and instead go to people who can actually use them. I have given away a ton of the kids toys and clothes and recently someone gave me a fan. Yay!

If you haven't used it or worn it in the last 2 years then you won't miss it by donating it to a charity. I will be doing a major clean up this weekend and will be taking my own advice. There is a difference of do you need it or want it?
