There is no "bigger picture" as someone stated....

If you genuinely think there is no bigger picture then that is because you live a very sheltered and secluded life, my point is this, why is one life here worth more than one life in an undeveloped country? As people have said the neighbours/family had the power to stop the death of this poor girl, as we all have the power to stop the death of tens of thousands in 3rd world countries... People as a whole just generally don't because they're selfish, and that's fine.

What the hell brings a mother to deny her own children food?.I know there are some wicked parents out there but these children would have been suffering so much and in severe pain for weeks even months whilst this woman and her partner stood by and watched. It makes me sick to the stomach to even think about it.
Mothers in deprived countries everywhere are having to watch their youngsters suffer from malnutrition and can do little about it but this particular situation was just pure malice.

why is one life here worth more than one life in an undeveloped country?

Where has anyone said that???
Where... quotes please.

As people have said the neighbours/family had the power to stop the death of this poor girl, as we all have the power to stop the death of tens of thousands in 3rd world countries...

What nonsense, utter rubbish i am afraid.
If you were to bother to find out why there are millions of people starving in 3rd world countries you would know it is due to "governments" that are actually dictatorships who buy themselves things like gold statues and build palaces for themselves from the countries money rather than building proper irrigation systems, due to civil wars, due to no education that the GOVERNMENTS of these countries refuse to allow. The list goes on and on and on.

I believe the comparisons you keep insisting on drawing between the 3rd world where people die constantly of starvation and a child dying where there is NO NEED OR EXCUSE to die of starvation in a country where we have a welfare state, so called Social Workers, a legal system and of course basic sanitation, running water and food everywhere, are daft.
Believe me, I feel extremely passionate about the need to end 3rd world starvation, i give to Oxfam and various other charities that help the 3rd world but this case is nothing to do with what happens abroad.

At no point has anyone said the life of this child is worth more that that of one in a developing country. They have simply stated that in a developed country this is a disgusting incident to have happened and was much more easily avoidable.

I have in no way led a sheltered life. I won't go into what I have been through as it is irrelevent. I have never been starving and my parents always looked after me. The point is that in developing countries or countries where food is scarce (sp?) and money is witheld from the majority starvation is more commonplace and as such is deemed to be un-newsworthy.

The outrage as to why this child died in this country while many thousands of children die in 3rd world countries surely comes from the fact that a child dies for the want of food and nutrition in one of the western worlds richest countries.
this child could have walked into many nmeighbours homes and been given food Im pretty sure of that, the fact is the parent/s of the child are guilty of neglect for whatever reason wether by malice or omission.

We all have a responsiblity for the children in our street, our estate, our county, our country and our world, children are a result of what parents make them. There is probably no single person to blame for this tradegy, the parents could have easily of had mental health problems, the neighbours simply didnt want to get involved and social services have a nationwide shortage of qualified and competent social workers. We all have a part to play in this childs sad and tragic death, it could have been a neighbours child to any one of us. When was the last time we looked over the fence to see if everything was ok? When was the last time we intervened when we heard shouting going on next door, when was the last time we offered a neighbour who was struggling time to spend on their own?

The 'nuclear society' as its so called now talks about how families, through pressures of money and expectations end up with both parents working, moving away from extended families and thus losing that essential extended support. We have moved so far away from being a society whereby we each watch out for each others kids on the street, feed them all and contribute to their overall welfare. Its a sad loss for us all.

I have worked with many parents who just dont have the capacity to understand actions versus consequences and are also shunned by their community along with their children, i feel responsible for putting something back, whether that be my knowledge, skills, time or money. I wish i could do more. I also wish more people would do something (sessional workers, support workers, youth workers etc etc) to help the thousands of children struggling to thrive in their own communities in the UK alone.

Its a controversial thread and i expect to be challenged, no offence intended and none taken i hope but i stand by my opening line, we are all responsible for the children in our own community too. One child dying is to many.

Gulp !

I used to look over the fence regularly, but was accused of perving so I stopped! Not my fault the neighbour's girl lost weight and was a pretty sexy size 12 at 19 years old!

i just dont understand how parents can withdraw children from school and no body checks on them, its common sense, especially 6 children that were supposedly "known" to social services, its scary to think that things like this are obviously going un noticed, poor girl, hope she is at peace now, and i hope her siblings find proper care now, and arent too mentally scarred

Home schooling is perfectly legal & they were visted at home shortly after the mother removed them. She gave bullying as the reason. When the house was searched they found school books.

I've been digging a bit on google, as I'll admit this story has disturbed me a lot - it shouldn't happen in today's Britain.

Do the same thing to the parents - let them die a long, lingering death from starvation. It won't bring little Khyra back, but slapping her "parents'" wrists isn't going to either. And at least we'd feel as though SOME justice has been done.

I saw an article in the papers where the little girls father was slating Social Services for not making sure his daughter was looked after. Perhaps, if he hadn't abandoned responsibility for his daughter, she'd be alive today.

It's all very well to slate Social Serices for this and that failure but the truth of the matter is that there are a lot of people needing a lot of help. And the money isn't there to provide the support. Maybe, the next time we whinge about the Council Tax going up by 10% when our salaries have gone up by 2%, we will remember this little girl and pay it willingly. But probably not. A lot of people, once they get in the voting booth, put an X by the name of the person who they think will provide them with tvhe best deal personally. Not who will provide society in general. It's cash in our pockets most people want. Things haven't really moved on since Maggie and the I want I get generation. Also, some of the money that is provided is wasted by councils. The councils are run by the people we vote in.

Parents, be they in situ or absent should not abdicate responsibility for their children to others. In my opinion, the mother, her bf and the father are all equally guilty of neglect in this case.

It shouldn't happen again but it will. We just don't like to interfere. I would have thought that after watching Jamie Bulger, being filmed on CCTV, taken through the streets to his horrific death, everyone in this country would be glad to interfere where there was concern.

But apparently not.

The lady that saw him just before he was taken onto the railway lines when those two little ******** told her that they were taking him to the police station because he was lost, the neighbours who were concerned that they hadn't seen the child out playing in the last month. If any of them had taken action the deaths might have been avoided, but they didn't.

In the end, the parents of this little girl failed her, the council workes failed her and perhaps more thought provoking than anything, society failed her.

Perhaps, if society at large learns the lesson that we should all care for the weak and vulnerable, step in and speak up, another child might be saved.

But to be honest, I don't think that will happen.
