We could, without too big a stretch of the imagination, easily be something of that order, or we could just be strands of self-replicating DNA with self-awareness who don't like the concept that one day we will cease to be!
That is essentially what we are.
Actually, what we are, as we define ourselves, is a series of electrical impulses in the brain.
Everything we see, feel, percieve and undertand all comes down tot he same thing.
Therefore don't try and understand life, just enjoy it, because there is no life after it. | |

Got to say though I dont buy the theory that this life is it and thats it. It just defeats the whole object of existance.
Things exist to exist and things do not exist to not exist then if thats the case. | |

I think I may have stumbled across a solution. All of the people who do genuinely believe in an afterlife shouldn't hang around cluttering up this place. They should kill themselves and leave the planet to the ones who will truly appreciate their time on it. That way everyone will be happy. | |

Posted: 5/22/2008 8:34:40 AM | Depends, physiologically then yes, there are a finite amount of carbon atoms on this planet, we and everything else are carbon based lifeforms, ergo the carbon atoms which we are made up of were once the carbon atoms in perhaps... Mary Magdalene, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, or even Hitler ... Carbon has a half life of around 5,700 years or so, so yes physiologically we do carry on, kind of, maybe, in a very oblique manner...
Spiritually? I have no idea but I in my ignorance hope we do somehow, somewhere ... I dont believe in the classical Heaven or Hell but whatever happens, I plan to cause as much disruption in the afterlife as I have here.. | |

I wish it was that simple in this life. Just have belief and we would get all we desire...oh actually maybe we do have it in this life,its called a cult isnt it? .
The fact is we will never know what happens when we die,maybe we do all pass over to a better place or maybe a worse place!.maybe we just get burnt to ashes or rot in a box and thats it.
I think i am going to believe that when its my time i am going to pass over to a place made of chocolate and marshmallow. ignorance is bliss. | |

Well given that whatever meaning you put into life, or whatever belief you give it, it is essentially only though processes in your brain. That really is all it is. Whether you 'buy' into another belief it essentially doesn't matter for the reason I have just given.
So what is the object of existence that you think my argument defeats?
Indeed, thing do exsist purely for the reason of existence. Does it have to be another way then?? I postulate that the reaosn it 'has' to be another way is because humans have a natural desire to 'believe' in things. Thats why the concept of heaven worked so well as a form of control. The idea that after years of hard work, poverty and ill health.. there will be something wonderful as a reward.
The problem with beliefs is that they are very hard to change. They become ingrained with time and have been the reason for many atrocities.
Its much better to stick with ideas.... they are easier to change.  | |

And why is that? lol, are you implying that your scientific stance on this somehow phases other people?
If anything i think it is interesting to throw another point of view into the spectrum of discussion, you have a scientific outlook as do others, i dont and others dont as well.

Having read most of these mails on this forum there are some really good points been made and I my self am more convinced of an after life then I was before.
If there was no there after then we would not of existed in the first place so yeah there is definately an afterlife.

So how about this as a concept.........
Christians and those of similar beliefs will go to heaven.
Those who think reincarnation exists will become living once more.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
