So, it's ok to force me listen to your stupid conversation when you're talking on your CELL PHONE in public. Why should I be subjected to listen to all "your" drama when you are talking on your cell phone..Not you in general but people that talk on their cell phones in public is the same darn thing...I should "stop" everything because somebody thinks they are soooooooooooooooooo importante and listen to their BS and I should keep MY music LOW..so I can "HEAR" them talking on their CELL PHONE...oh, hell no,,,no way..I'M TURNING MY MUSIC FULL BLAST..I can think just fine thank you very much... P.S.-->>You're at a stop light with somebody that's blaring their music...It's only 3-4 mins...What is your "beef" girl?

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/22/2008 8:20:04 PM | I truly believe that hearing aids are going to be HUGE business in the future. I damaged my ears as a teen with loud music, and I didn't have anywhere near the power and decibels that young people are exposing themselves to today. Between the car stereos that you can hear blocks away and the MP3 players blasting in their ear canals, you can practically hear the cilia breaking off in their cochleae. My cloak of invincibility wore out when I hit my 30s, but the damage was done already. | |

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/22/2008 8:21:22 PM | ROFLMAO.... I totally agree with you about the cell phone thing too!!
Cell phones are yet another thing to add to the noise pollution that drives me nuts.... maybe that's why I enjoy rural living so much.... I can handle the sounds of the birds and the chipmunks better than I can handle the sounds of music blaring and cell phones ringing....

When you go deaf from your own stupidity...
Don't ask for your insurance or medicair/medicaid to pay the bill
And if you come around here blasting music... expect the $2000 ticket.
There was an area of California (or was it the whole state?) that passed a noise abatement law that said the cops could IMPOUND THE CAR and force the owner to pay for the removal and destruction of the stereo system before the car was returned. I hope they crushed a lot of stereos.

Diesel engines, loud motorcycles, and delivery trucks with screechy brakes annoy me much more than someone groovin' to their favorite tunes.

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/22/2008 9:21:13 PM | Hm...I saw this topic and was just thrilled.
I love my music, and I love it loud. Before my 2nd child was born, I had one of the loudest stereos (in comparison to setup) in all of southern ontario. It was the louder than some much bigger setups. And it still wasn't loud enough for me. I got pulled over once on the main stretch at the beach near my house, because the officer wanted to know "if it was necessary for my music be loud enough to rattle her windshield as I drove past".
That being said...I will mention, that I still love my music loud, but can't afford (neither the money involved or the space) to have a large stereo right now, but would definitely get one again. To those who say "They could at least play good music"...everyone has their own taste in music.
To those who say they think it's stupid because they want to hear when they are older. To point out a fact...the highs are more dangerous than the lows that the subwoofer blasts out. A properly setup system will pump out up to maybe 80 hertz thru the sub. These are the low tones. Anything above that is taken care by the other speakers, so technically, thinking the bass is stupid due to causing lack of hearing, is wrong. It's the highs that are most dangerous to your hearing - According to the OP, that is the complaint. (Yes I realize the bass isn't really good for your hearing, just pointing out that it shouldn't be the main concern)
As for proving decibels...it'd be very hard to do...For example there is no way that a cop could prove exactly how loud my stereo was as I was driving past. Well ok, it is possible I suppose. The law around here for car stereos is some rediculous amount. Even if they did have a dB reader, the likelyhood (unless on an empty street with buildings all around) of them picking up the stereo to be above the legal limit is slim to nil. The majority of car stereos people hear, in a competition, may rate a 130dB reading, if that. That's with the windows shut. The reading will generally go down with the windows open...and that's reading right from inside the car against the windshield, let alone at the open window. dB ratings, last time I checked (3 yrs ago) for car stereos did not exceed 180dB...and that's talking World Competitions, with major sponsers and extreme amounts of money. My stereo's biggest hit was 151 dB, in it's prime, averaging around 150 dB. There were a few street car stereos that were louder in this area (usually with double the equipment).
All that being said...yes some of it has to do with bragging rights as you can probably see from my post. But it is also about the joy of listening to music at a loudness that blurs your vision, and may make you or others vomit! It's stupidity, yes, ah well, we all have our guilty pleasures.
In my defence...I was generally polite with my stereo, more so to prevent hassle from the cops, but still. Intersections, nighttime in town, and such...I was only pulled over twice in 2.5 yrs for the stereo...and my car was very recognizable.
Btw, nothing compares (not even nightclubs) to the bass experiance of a well setup car stereo...

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/22/2008 9:21:14 PM | I find it ****ing annoying. It's so obnoxious when you hear these ****ing loud booming that shakes everything within a 200 foot radius and I can't believe that stuff is even allowed.
If you can't tell, that really chaps my ass. It's one of the biggest things that bothers me about people driving. I don't even see how it could be a pleasurable experience in any way. Wow, my car makes this incredible loud thud noise every half a second so loud I can't hear anything else! I CANT BELIEVE HOW GREAT THAT IS!
It's different if you're doing it for a competition but when you're going through a city driving around or something, what's the ****ing point? It's just ridiculously pointless.

Anything above that is taken care by the other speakers, so technically, thinking the bass is stupid due to causing lack of hearing, is wrong. From the Canadian Hearing Society: (http://www.chs.ca/info/noise/general.html)
Because almost all noise- or music-induced hearing loss is observed on a hearing test (also called an audiogram) in the 4000 Hz region, which is near the top note of a piano keyboard, it is understandable that many expect that sound with energy at 4000 Hz would be the most damaging to your hearing. However, almost all sounds, regardless of their pitch, are equally damaging to your hearing. The reason why hearing loss is greatest at 4000 Hz has more to do with the way the ear is made up than with the sound that causes the hearing loss. For example, a bass guitar can be as damaging as a flute.

It can't be any more annoying than having somebody's body parts underneath the car dragging around or a loud annoying "car" engine that sounds like it's on it's last leg..How annoying is that...I'd rather hear music than the sound of cars or being in traffic.

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/22/2008 9:55:20 PM | ^^ Fair enough, I stand corrected on facts. Thanks, DietCoke®Guy Lows as bad as highs. I can accept that...I have no rebuttal at this time. | |

How the hell do you manage music? All I can hear is boom boom thud crash and the occasional rattle.
At least with car troubles like an old run down engine, those things can't be helped and people can't always afford something newer or better. Big deal there, at least they can't help it. People spend thousands of dollars on sound systems and subject everyone to their series of booms and thuds.

Particularly when they put it in a 1979 Buick Regal that is primer colored and rusting out.

In my defense of love of loud music, and music in general. (as I can't speak for everyone, and I know a lot of people are just in it for the boom) I have a small system in my car now and I despise it. It is not loud enough for my liking, and more importantly, lacks the sound quality I prefer...but, every type of music has it's subtleties, even gangsta rap. You may not be able to hear them from the outside...but you can definitely pick them up on the inside. This is one reason I love my home audio tower speakers...high in sound quality, and bassy at the same time :D

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/23/2008 12:03:12 AM | It's the thumping of the chest that i love so much. Nothing like feeling a good kick in a song. Could just be something guys enjoy whilst girls don't, although I try not to impede on other peoples audio space
Nothing beats clarity in a sound system, have sick phat bass without the rest of the frequency range to back it up is useless.

Blueeyedbaldman..... I love Van Halen.... and I'd be along with the tunes.... it's the music where you have no friggin' idea what the hell it is they're saying.... omg.... I sound old!!!
Not only what they're are saying, but what they are listening to. Some of it is not even music. Whats with the bass pumping so loud that you can literally hear the windows in the car vibrating? Everytime I hear that I always hope that the windows shatter while I am watching.

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/23/2008 3:55:19 AM | I'd have to blow out my speakers to hear it that loud over the sound of my Flowmasters!
But yeah, it's annoying, especially when I'm parked next to someone at a stop light trying to listen to some cool 70's classic rock and my windows begin to rattle.

| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/23/2008 6:30:23 AM | Ya know, I don't have thousands sunk into some all bass system like a lotta people do. I do have a quality set up though. When I'm 40 miles from nowhere with the t-tops off and the windows down hittin curves at 30 over the suggested limit I like it a little loud
But in the city, which I HATE going to anyway, I'm respectful of others.
|
| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/23/2008 7:09:20 AM | Actually the problem isn't specifically loud music at all!
It's this modern day addiction to distraction!
You almost can't see someone walking down the street without:
A cell phone An MP3 Player A cup of Timmy's A bottle of something
They re' like babies that constantly need some form of pacification? What might happen I wonder, if they were left alone with just their thoughts?
|
| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/23/2008 7:15:11 AM | Maybe they're turning their music up to hide a noisy rattle-sound in their car that just won't go away, or to hide signs that their car is on its way to a nasty end, such as engine-knock, etc. Having said that, I live next to a busy road and while one car at the lights every so often playing "doof-doof" might be annoying, imagine it every five minutes or so cruising past your house!
I suppose the same can be said for people who have the volumes on their ipods turned to full in a crowded area, such as on a train or at the gym. I speak from personal experience here, normally because i'm the culprit at the gym for doing this!!!
|
| Booming car stereo systems... Posted: 5/23/2008 7:20:29 AM | Not to mention, at 19 those speakers will get 19 year old hotness into your car lol
I'm pushing 30, I'd rather have the bass of 400 horsepower, I already have 27 year old hotness in my car
Real women like gas powered rumbling
Or maybe they just realize if a guy can afford a daily driver that gets 11 miles a gallon he's flush with cash

If they're going to play it loud, they could at least play something GOOD.... but they never do. It's always some 'orrible Chav music. Dance, RnB, little kiddie rave or Gansta Rap. Ugh.
I know someone who, when faced with a bunch of chavs & their chav music, when stopped at the lights, "music" blasting out, window open, thinking they were cool... he put his head inside the car, looked the little oiks inside & shouted at them "More tea vicar!!" hahah
GOD, I miss England. | |
