Would you clone your dog if you could?

I saw that article, the expression on her face told everything. I'd clone my cat that was taken from me 25 yrs ago, then subsequently put down. She was my friend.

The only concern I have is not the cost involved, but more so the hidden genetic flaws that happens through tampering with life. There are people out there that's made the traditional way without any add ingredients, that's...you know...?!

I think the cloning technology is a good one - for things like body parts that was lost due to sickness or accidents. But the whole dog and pony show? I am against.

Unless your name is God, don't fu*k with it.

Weren't their subsequent problems with the first clone "Dolly" the sheep...? Don't know that we know enough about cloning yet to toy with it. Personally, I would never clone a pet, even though some of them I will always miss; as someone else put it...for me it would disrespect their memory . Other considerations aside, each was a unique being; like humans their experiences play a part in what they become. How do you duplicate that?

no, absolutely not. My last dog, who passed away only 2 weeks ago, was perfect in my mind. She had her own personality, her strengths and her weaknesses. She was a rescue dog that I just had to rescue from PAWS. I only had her for 6 short years before she died suddenly, she was only 8 years young. Still frisky, happy, seemingly healthy until moments before she collapsed and passed away.

She was who she was and now she is gone. No need to clone her, she served her purpose on earth, I suppose, and now she is gone to a better place. As with the last 3 dogs that I have lost I always get another dog, always a rescue dog, an innocent dog who needs a good home and a good life. My life with "Bailey" was wonderful, but if I was only meant to have her for 6 years.. so be it. I feel comfort knowing she was unique in every way, one of a kind you might say. She loved being my dog as much as I loved being her guardian.

As much as I loved her and would give my right arm to have her back with me, laying at my feet right now as I play on the computer, it does not seem right. She is gone and it is final, as heart wrenching as this might be.

I see no purpose in cloning a pet. At what stage would you clone them?? as a puppy?? well I got Bailey when she was 14 months old so her personality was pretty much molded in her. She would have been a different dog had I brought her up from a pup. I am confinced of that. So do you clone them just before they die?? no thanks...

Oh, sorry, un-leashed, it is hard when a dog dies young and I know you really loved her. As you wrote, it was her time.

I suspect that these rescues age a lot before we bring them to our homes.

There are so many dogs in need of homes. I have a PAWs rescue at my feet now and a foster to my side and my dog of 11 years on the same side.

My PAWs dogs come from the USA where many of them only get 3 days to be adopted or they will be gassed. In Canada, we have no kill shelters, but this is not the case in the US.

SO WHY clone dogs when we have far too many?

Off topic, and I am sorry, but do you have any ideas where to look for a rescue dog. PAWS seems to be from the USA. I got Bailey for NWSpay & Neuter society, but they seem to have only problem dogs (separation anxiety, can't be near children or other dogs, etc) I was lucky with Bailey she just had problems with some other dogs, but that was it.. Any ideas where to look for a dog that does not have alot of problems. Again, sorry to be off topic

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/BC160.html

From here, you can navigate to paws and also find good information on why cloning dogs is not a good idea. There are 1000s of dogs who are gassed every day and 1000s of dogs in need of homes.

Rescues can come with problems, but not always. The weim I have is an angel. No onw wanted him because he was timid and skittish. He has come a long way.

The pointer I am fostering is prey driven. Nature is his master and he needs to be leashed all of the time. I am getting him to come when he is called and I am very hopeful that he can be trained so that he is more responsive to humans than birds.

I have found if you talk to the folks at the rescue organizations they often can tell exactly what issues the dog will have.

Think the idea of this thread was to replace or make carbon copies of your K9 friend so you have the impression that can keep living memories of the original or carry on the traits deemed amazing about a specific dog. It's not about mass producing pooches of any kind. It's genetic tampering of nature by humans for human satisfaction. The whole idea is sick to me.

probably not...i mean yes, genetically the clone would be an exact DNA copy of the original, but personality and behaviour while influenced by genetics are largely based on experience. it's impossible for the clone to mirror the experiences and thus the learned behaviours, reactions, and phobias of the original. therefore each animal will be unique with the potential for the original and the clone to develop quite differently.
