I do own a bicycle and use it for short trips around the area. The problem is that to get from my domicile to my place of work, I have to cross a major 4-lane hiway very, very early in the morning (I start work before 7:00 AM) and return during evening rush hour. I would not want to do that on a bicycle. The way some folks drive is very dangerous and the roads aren't built with bike paths, so being in the roadway with all those cars is quite unattractive.

Besides, as I approach 60, the prospect of riding a bicycle that far twice a day every day is less and less appealing. As for sending you the $100, well, no deal. But thanks for the offer.

Wow...I'm wounded...already planned how to spend my extra cash every two weeks!
I would have even sewed you one of those cute little reflective vests so the cars whizzing by at 80 MPH would see you AK! I see how you are....chuckle chuckle
and ummm...btw, age is just a number, you're as young as you feel!

Any age over 55 is SO much more than "a number." It's a number of things that don't work as well as they used to, any number of times. It's the number of times I forget things--only to discover that I am holding them. It's the number of YOUNG people who say it...and the very small number of OLD people who do, because we KNOW better!

Interesting to see the opinions on MPG.. Have you ever calculated your vehicle CO2 output? There is a calculator on www. fueleconomy. gov (cut and paste and take out the spaces I added). Look on the left of the page for the side by side comparison to find your vehicle, then compare it to another if you'd like.

Sustainability is a complex issue but it's true that automotive OEMs have had technology to reduce MPG for years! The market and government just haven't forced them to launch it.

The Europeans are paying ~ $10/gallon for gasoline! What kind of car will you drive if our gas goes that high?!

On the topic - dating someone that is environmentally conscious would be attractive to me for what it says about the person. Though I would be turned off if it rose to the level of fanatical.

On 'green' - this is a huge global issue that is facing us now and down the road. It's a pity that it is not easier to recycle, bicycle, buy local produce, etc...but a lot of that rests on us not demanding it and using it when it is available. Too often cost is the final motive in a purchase and it's hard to avoid that in this economy.

One can always find reasons not to be more 'green'. Yes, solutions that are now being offered are not the best, but they are better then none at all and change is a process the current solutions will get better/safer/cheaper.

Nicely said.

There is a phrase I've been using regarding sustainability and recycling for years.. 'prime the pump'

Currently recycled items can be more expensive. Making sustainable choices does require some sacrifice now. They will change as more people make better choices and drive the cost down. I pay more for items with recycled content because I know it's a good idea (for the product) and I know I'm helping an industry get stronger.

Hi AWY, I am also looking for a "green" mate--I don't think there are many here (on POF). I added my green preference s to my profile to weed out those who are not willing to make any changes. Glad to see others like me though!

Don't forget to mention that the EPA's emissions testing also forces fuel economy down. Have fun passing bag 1 emissions with a euro-spec car.

While I'm at it ,10 a gallon for a small country thats not even closely comparable to ours which has a useful and purposeful transit system (unlike detroit) and has nothing but smaller cars isn't that big a deal for the euro's,also 1.39 for a 16 oz bottle of water isn't a 24 gallon weekly fill up.

I have a really serious question. How do you handle your carbon footprints from net use? Everyone has a different opinion on this.

Doe this mean that there aren't any validated methods to calculate these aspects and impacts? It has been said, "if you can't measure it, it can't be improved."

I have been involved in environmental affairs in my career since the beginning, but I think there is something I could learn from this discussion. Does your question refer to reducing your carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits? Perhaps, the"Inconvenient Truth" hype has given rise to an untenable concept. The EPA has used the permitting process to guide resource conservation and allocation up until now. Al Gore's approach seems to serve as another wealth re-distribution scheme to further hamper U.S. competitiveness. Hey Al, how about giving up a house, private plane, or SUV of your own? (and show some role-model behavior?)

"Beware, my lord, of jealousy
It is the green-eyed monster, which doth mock
The meat it feeds on."

Does "green" dating really exist? Or is it the same as trying to find someone else with a particular lifestyle choice to share?

I think if you practice green dating to the fullest extent when you meet someone, you'll probably miss the honeymoon period altogether.

Im very green. I quit dumping my oil change oil in the grass and letting my antifreeze run down the driveway. I expect any woman in my life to be responsible and do the same.
