My teeth are far from perfect.
Ever take a line drive in the mouth?
Ahhh..... the joys of coaching little league.
I made a decision to get them fixed later, if at all.
Yes, the cost of having them fixed was a big factor.

OMG! I only read a few responses (in fact I totally skipped pages 2 and 3) and I truly understand everyone's point of view that taking care of one's teeth is vital and that decayed teeth are not attractive etc etc.

HOWEVER, that said, I would absolutely NOT make a complete and utter judgement call on someone based on teeth alone! Teeth can be fixed! Finances (and perhaps fear) may dictate WHEN the fixing happens but I would rather date a great guy with lousy teeth than a guy with great teeth and a lousy personality any day!!!

In fact, I met a fantastic man here on POF who I have now been with over 2 years (the one with the great personality and the teeth in need of fixing). I shudder to think where I would be today if his teeth was all I looked at!

(Many) People with bad teeth deserve some understanding. There are MANY reasons why bad teeth get that way and hygiene isnt the ONLY one. And like I said - they CAN be fixed. What a shame to pass by a person of substance for the sake of how things look.

I support everyone's right to have a viewpoint but mine differs. And I am glad it does! Otherwise I would have missed a great opportunity to meet someone really special!

Teeth/breath, working auto and income, three important factors in dating. We're going to be kissing that mouth and it is more attractive with teeth in it and tasting sweet.

It depends on the flaw.
If it's a "neglect" thing, No way. If you've got super stained icky teeth, bad breath, plaque, etc... Same for really crooked teeth.
Now, if it's a chipped tooth or a little crooked, it's not that big a thing as long as you have excellent oral hygiene.
I lived in braces, palette expanders, and headgear for nine years of my young life to have the smile I have now...

Short answer, maybe.

I worked with a guy who even acknowledged that he had terrible teeth due to smoking and not seeing a dentist over the years who had women all over him because he had a warm personality. He could not understand it, but it seemed to work for him.

I think it could happen, just don't expect them to flock to you; the smile is the first thing the enemy tends to look at.

The comments here are pretty unanimous.
I dated a guy and everything about him was super attractive (6 ft 2, blonde, blue eyes, built) but his teeth were badly stained. I found it such a turn off that I couldn't kiss him.
A trip to the dentist to have them fixed/coloured whatever would have made all the difference in his appearance.

Some replies on here appear to have the perception that some comments are shallow.

Having perfect teeth - or the 'All American Super Smile' is not the main issue here as I understand it? I think the overall consenus is that teeth that have been cared for, looked after: regardless of aesthetic value: is what the majority think is important. Not whether they are flawless, and free of imperfections. It's more a case of basic hygiene being paramount. I have been attracted to guys who have had chips or a gap etc that is simply endearing, but at least they still cleaned them and paid a little care!

No one, even happygal 28 is going to tell me that plaque covered teeth, lines of dark brown nicotine marks staining them, decaying and untreated dental problems, rotting neglected teeth causing bad breath, gum disease etc (and the owner not doing anything about them), can over be overlooked:- regardless of how wonderful the person is an an individual. I offer apologies if I offend her by saying this, but if she can do that, she's a far better person than I and I take my hat off to her.

As for those on meds and the gentleman with asthma - I understand fully as I suffer from asthma, and daily meds have caused problems with teeth and gums. But like him, I didn't leave it and accept that was the way it was: I chose to do something about it.

My ex-boyfriend had nice teeth, but just the fact that I knew he hated brushing them, turned me off. Then becuase he didn't brush that often, a large part of his back tooth fell off. I was sooo turned off, even though his front teeth looked fine.

That wasn't the reason we split, but it did change my perception of him, even though I tried to not be effected by it.

A little crooked is okay. I can do that. However, if they're overly jutting out of the mouth, there are some missing, or they're extremely yellow, it's a no-no. I don't care how cool the guy is...I like nice teeth!

It depends on the "flaw" and what caused it. If it's just that his teeth are a little crooked but are well taken care of, it wouldn't be a big deal to me. If the "flaws" were caused by poor hygeine and neglect, that would be a turn off. I take excellent care of my teeth, and even for being a coffee drinker and a smoker, my teeth luckily don't show any signs of it yet.

how women feel about a grown man with wires in his mouth?????
(Msg 63)

DEBO27 - doesn't seem like anyone answered your question - are your braces temporary, or permanent? Can you speak clearly? Eat easily? In other words, if they're relatively unobtrusive, like most braces, they shouldn't be a dealbreaker. And if they're temporary, even better!

Regardless, your issue is quite different than someone who is walking around with seriously neglected oral hygiene...and women certainly appreciate the difference.

OP - ouch, if you have problem teeth I feel for you. My nick name in school was Bucky. This past weekend, I saw my Uncle Bob (81 years old). He had so many missing teeth, but what teeth I could see, it reminded me of a Jack O Lantern.

One of the first things folks will notice is your smile, your eyes, and if you look alive. The outer package of one, can make or break the deal in less than 30 seconds. I'd recommend getting your teeth fixed. Check out some dental schools, get some dental insurance. You may have to get your teeth worked on, a little at a time. Make sure that you do maintain proper hygiene of your mouth. There's a difference between not being able to afford cosmetic dentistry and not brushing/flossing your teeth. What you do have, take good care of it!

This is my weird pet peeve......I am not attracted to men with jacked up teeth! It's uncontrollable for me! I turn into Austin Powers, just point and say.."moley moley moley!" but with teeth

How badly "flawed" do you mean?

Some flaws can be overlooked, but some simply cannot: decayed teeth, missing teeth, teeth that look as if they are about to become missing, or unbrushed teeth are among them.

I had lunch with a man whose profile picture gave no indication of the state of his teeth. When I met him, I almost cringed when I saw that all the teeth on the lower front were missing and the top teeth were almost brown with discoloration. He looked as if he had one of those fake sets of hillbilly teeth. We had a polite lunch and even a good conversation, but I knew that it would never go further than that. I could not EVEN contemplate the possibility of EVER kissing this man.

Shudder.

Why in the world would anyone want to kiss a guy who's teeth are not clean, black and rotten, missing or broken. Rotten teeth usually means poor hygeine and BAD breath!!

I was really let down for a first date after weeks of talking on-line and on the phone to this guy that I really thought would be great. He looked good to me in his picture too! He met me at my car and brought me flowers and was taking me to a very nice resturant. I put the flowers in the car so they would not be in the way. I was going to turn around and give him a hug to thank him but bless his heart, he was standing there all proud and happy and smiling ear to ear.... with his black decaying teeth at the gum line. I never been more dissapointed in my life. I lost my appetite and could not even eat my dinner. How could I tell him how I felt without hurting his feelings.

OK...now don't get all excited yet. I think a guy should care enough about himself to get at least his FRONT teeth fixed. You know I am NOT the first person that had been turned off by them. If he does not care enough about himself, how can he care about me? YUCK!

Your teeth are what gives your face character, a little crooked or a little space between your front teeth is sexy. Date/Deal breaker... nasty smile. Sorry guys.

Thank you bbfm11 for your absolutely on the mark opinion. I couldnt agree more. You do not offend me at all and I appreciate your kind words respecting my opinion .

I thank you for recognizing that I am a more understanding person than most. I met my fishy here and his teeth arent the best but we have been together for 2 years. He is not complacent about it and neither am I and I think that is the difference here. It is not a question about doing something about it - it is merely a question about when.
