Real women, paticularily battered women ARE. They truly understand that there can be a thousand things worse in a boyfriend that flawed teeeth.

O.k., I think I know where you're coming from with this . . . lol!
Anyway, it depends on what the flaws are: front-central diastema (o.k.), huge gaping maw (not o.k.); not perfectly straight (o.k.), twisted the wrong way round or bent at a 90-degree angle (not o.k.); not sparkling perfectly white (o.k., we can deal with this), greenish-grey or shucksin' black (seriously not o.k.). . .
With that said, if a guy is having some dental issues that are a matter of aesthetics it doesn't usually matter to real women. I mean, these types of things are mostly due to a lack of dental education and or plain, simple dental phobia.
I dated this guy who had a tooth in his head where the filling had fallen out and the tooth had split all the way through the root. So he was in excruciating pain but refused to go to the dentist because he was one of these good ol' boy/nascar/ain't-got-time-to-bleed types and to quote him "[didn't] see any reason for it". *chuckles* I finally convinced him he had to go to the dentist and he went not because I told him his face was swollen, and not because I told he could get septicemia. He finally went because I promised I would sit there with him while he had his procedure and that he would get better kisses after he healed. (Big Baby!) | |

Posted: 6/21/2008 5:58:58 AM | Call me shallow OP, but taking care of your teeth is a part of basic hygiene and there is nothing more disgusting to me than to see a man that has no problem shelling out big bucks for his car or motorcycle, yet won't bother to fix his own teeth or visit a dentist on a regular basis. One of the first things I notice about a person is how well they take care of themselves. If they have enough respect for themselves to take care of their overall health, then that is certainly a most attractive quality in my book, but if they're missing one or two teeth or their teeth are just plain rotting out, then I have no interest in ever pursuing a relationship with that person. ugh...just thinking about a man with bad teeth triggers my gag reflex.

If just chips, needs whitening, not a problem. If you're wearing the equivalent of a 18" gold necklace in your mouth--Gawd no. If you are missing teeth and don't have plans to get them replaced...no, I can't look past it. I dated a guy who managed to smoke and have crappy teeth...but refused to get them worked on. I asked if he thought maybe giving up smoking...you would have thought I had 2 heads. I gave him up shortly after because of other issues but the teeth thing was an issue (smoking as well).
People on here have said that dental work is expensive...yes it is but you only get 1 real set of teeth and that's it. So if that really were the case, and you couldn't afford it, figure out a way to afford it. Dental schools do tons of stuff at a discount...save up $$ to get them fixed.
And a nice smile with teeth there makes any man or woman attractive...you can't be "attractive" if you smile and look like a jack o' lantern now can you? | |

Posted: 6/21/2008 9:05:11 AM | | we're visual creatures, and anyone who says that looks don't matter in an effort not to sound shallow is simply not being honest. certainly looks aren't the ONLY thing that matters -- i'd rather have an imperfect man with a wonderful personality, than a GQ model who's a complete a**hole. yes, a beautiful smile is something that i find very attractive in a man, however despite that i have been involved with a few guys who had crooked teeth (dental hygiene is still a must, and they were fine in that category). i was with them, and found them attractive because of who they are and how they treated me. personality can help one overcome perceived flaws, and since no one is perfect anyways, more men should focus on developing themselves as human beings rather than concentrating on building their abs and pecs (or worrying about their teeth), just a thought. | |

SOME people CAN overlook it.

I happen to be someone who really appreciates a healthy setta teeth and gums. I can be friends with someone with less than such, but could not be romantic with someone with blah teeth. NOT "perfect"...just healthy, clean...present! LOL
I don't care WHAT the circumstances are for the cause of bad teeth, either! Whether it was stemming from having parents who did not take the kids to the dentist, an accident, an injury, an illness, finances, or just plain neglect. Someone is allotted a certain amount of "flex time" to get it taken care of...after that...no excuse. Sorry.
Interesting ~Fact~...did you know that a MAIN cause of bad teeth is quite simply because people DO NOT FLOSS?! Seriously! If you are someone who doesn't...no matter how great your teeth are NOW...try this:
Take a floss stick or thread...floss just a portion of your teeth, say a bottom or top half. Now...SMELL THE STICK OR THREAD. (Gross, I know!) Also...floss in front of a mirror...and LOOK AT THE RESULTS ON THE MIRROR! | |

Toothpaste is worst for brushing you teeth with. Here is why tootpaste has glycerin which prevents teeth from growing back if there's a small hole or potiential cavity. NOthing is better than brushing with salt with baking soda, rinse then use some coconut oil. Coconut oil is antibacterial. I floss it didn't stink but then I use a sonic toothbrush.
While you women are looking at the mirror check for any hair on your above your lip or nose hair sticking out. lol | |

Posted: 7/5/2008 6:37:08 AM | It is the oddest thing i've ever seen, but for some strange reason the majority of men i've met through here have the worst teeth!! Whats up with that??
Now my teeth are not perfect, but nice and I keep up on my dental visits. These men look like they haven't been to see a dentist since childhood. A couple, not at all.
Sorry if you think i'm shallow, you could be the most wonderful person in the world but if you have nasty teeth, i'm not kissing you. I think that is all apart of the attraction to a person. It tells me they take care of themselves which is important to me.
Think about how much your mouth plays into romancing a person. I usually watch a man's mouth as he speaks, his overall expressions. I look for a great smile, it is a total turn on.
A kiss tells me so much about a man and how he feels about me. If I can't or won't kiss a man because of bad breath or nasty teeth, it can never work.
GO GET YOUR TEETH FIXED!! I rather have a man with great teeth than him having a nice car, motorcycle or boat, etc. Use your money on your appearance first. It will pay off with the babes!!

OMG! I only read a few responses (in fact I totally skipped pages 2 and 3) and I truly understand everyone's point of view that taking care of one's teeth is vital and that decayed teeth are not attractive etc etc.
HOWEVER, that said, I would absolutely NOT make a complete and utter judgement call on someone based on teeth alone! Teeth can be fixed! Finances (and perhaps fear) may dictate WHEN the fixing happens but I would rather date a great guy with lousy teeth than a guy with great teeth and a lousy personality any day!!!
In fact, I met a fantastic man here on POF who I have now been with over 2 years (the one with the great personality and the teeth in need of fixing). I shudder to think where I would be today if his teeth was all I looked at!
(Many) People with bad teeth deserve some understanding.There are MANY reasons why bad teeth get that way and hygiene isnt the ONLY one. And like I said - they CAN be fixed. What a shame to pass by a person of substance for the sake of how things look.
I support everyone's right to have a viewpoint but mine differs. And I am glad it does! Otherwise I would have missed a great opportunity to meet someone really special!

I couldn't agree more....My teeth are not the most perfect, a couple of crooked ones on the top ....and My parents had 3 kids to take care of when I was younger, including a younger sister with Astburgers (sp) ....And now I am a single mom with 1 income so.....Making my insurance for my car and my rent, etc. is more important. I do take care of them and they aren't rotting......Besides even Madonna has a gap between her teeth..... | |

It is the first thing I notice about a guy and no matter how sexy he is, if his teeth are subpar, its OVER! Part of the reason is that I really question a person's judgement if they are walking around with bad teeth. If they don't care enough about something so fundamental, then this is a person I don't want in my life.
I might also add that disgusting raggedy fingernails and toenails are also a major turnoff! | |

If it's clear he doesn't take care of his teeth, then what other basic hygiene problems does he have --
Does he shower?
Does he wear deodorant?
Are his clothes clean?
Does he wash his hands after he potties.....every time? And does he wipe his azz??
Does he trim his nose and ear hair?

I have all my teeth minus wisdom teeth I had extracted, they are white but not bleached white. My upper canines stick out a tad more than they should, and my front teeth are not perfectly level. Straight, but not level. Rode a gobble-gator down the stairs when I was 5 or so, got my front teeth pushed into my sinuses. They came back, but not straight. I'm just glad they are there, and natural.
While we are on the subject, I guess my minor overbite and 2nd molar on the left side of the lower jaw being angled in slightly from breaking my jaw must be what's keeping the women away. | |

Teeth that aren't brushed at least daily probably shows that the person was too "busy" or lazy to clean them. If it was crooked teeth though, it could just be something they couldn't prevent, as it could be from lack of nutrients. I don't have model perfect teeth so I don't expect guys to have perfect teeth either. But if a guy had really bad half-rotted crooked teeth, not to mention bad breath, then...no? *shiver* Shallow or not, its kinda hard to ignore the bad teeth if you're sitting right in front of them... | |

YES...teeth can be fixed. However, if I knew someone for two years who had not made the efforts to fix them...I would not expect it to happen! And while there are a bevy of reasons for bad teeth...THEY CAN ALL BE FIXED. While it may be a shame to lose out on such a special someone...I would never know since I could not find myself attracted to such.
I am not talking gaps, or just less than a perfect, celeb smile! Lord knows...my teeth are FAR from perfect! I have a couple of fillings, a slight receding in the gum, little things that *I* notice. Heck...I am sure mine could even be whiter! I'm talking missing front teeth...horribly rotted or dirty...yellowed...etc.
I also understand the expense of dentistry...however, there are finance plans for such, as well as Dentist and Hygienist schools which do it at a major discount, kind of like how cosmetology schools run discounted salons for their students to practice on.
You know, it may sound vain...but considering a smile is the Universal Language...it's really not. A group of us went to a Denny's restaurant once, and our waitress had such foul teeth that it was actually quite unpleasant to view...and I personally lost my appetite! (Honest!) | |

I havent had a filling for over 25 years now. I am overal fitter than most peope my age. But I hate my teeth cos they are crooked and chipped. Thats why I have no pic on pof. I dont smile ever.
It's a shame that the supposedly socialist government of the UK wont do something about the serious dentist problem here. The good ole laws of supply and demand mean that with one dentist per 10,000 people or there abouts, anyone on the average wage simply cant afford bridge work etc. Other posters suggesting that we just save up a few months arent savvy with real life economys of the average working person. And I dont spend my dish on fancy cars, eating out, drinking red wine or HDTVs.  | |
