You must not have watched the show. Only one ended up with a 'wealthy' guy. They were all successful women who went through a lot of misfits before finding 'the one'.

The show validated my shoe addiction, so that was a good thing. I have the whole series on disc but each season and also the collectors edition. It is my favorite show of all time. My user name says it all though.

I found it to be clever and whitty as it showed the female perspective from four different views and it was about an assortment of relationships. From family to friends to lovers to boyfriends.

It should make men aware of what real women are looking for and that real women have careers, goals and dreams too.

Well done show. Clever, witty, stylish...and a bag o chips. All the guys were not rich. Highlighted scenarios that could really, or have actually happened. Bravo to Kim Cattrell for portraying a hot older woman so sensually, yet thought like a man.And Barishnikov was a real treat, and a sexy older man.The dynamic of the 4 women was pretty realistic, they had jealosies & spats, but always supportive. Loved their wearing men's undies. Can't wait for the movie!!!

I’ve never watched SATC, but based upon the comments of those who have, it seems the show was popular because the situations that the main characters faced struck a familiar chord with the viewers. IMO, SATC did not ruin dating. Dating was already past its expiration date and SATC just put an exaggerated spotlight on the moldier bits.

I always thought of sex and the city as COMEDY and nothing more. We have the Simpsons, Family Guy, and a bunch of other shows, all far worse screwed up people and some more violent too. Sex and the city dealt more with real life situations, the humorous side of it mostly.
It was funny, I never imagined people would take a comedy/ drama show so serious. crazy, huh? Its like the show has a cult following !

"Sex and the City" offered women some pretty unrealistic ideas about dating and men in general

In light of the movie release on the 30th, is this research for an upcoming article? Hmm? Anyhoo, if the show created unrealistic ideas then why did/does the show resonate with me and EVERY woman I know. Women from different countries in different age groups and backgrounds all relate(d) to the show. That's not about wishful thinking, it's because we've lived it. Those of us from NYC, even more so. Yes, it is art but as it's been said before...art has a strange way of imitating life.

We all cried when it ended. We plan marathons and watch it over and over on DVD. We've been waiting years for this movie because we can't wait for Carrie to get her Big. Remember, Candace Bushnell wrote the book that turned into the series and it was loosely based on her experiences with her and her friends. As more and more *ahem* articles are written that state the more successful a woman is the more likely she is to remain single, SaTC gave and still gives us hope.

As to your final question: Charlotte dated an uber rich, although IMO, not handsome guy (I do understand he was supposed to be, LOL), Trevor. (Generally, the rest of the men had different levels of success in various fields.) Those of us who followed the storyline, know how her relationship with Trevor turned out. Then she married her funny-looking divorce attorney who made her happier than she had ever been.

Your friend thinks THAT created a fantasy that a man can't get a woman unless he is handsome? It sent women a message to look beyond the packaging, especially in the episode where Charlotte communicated this to him during a fight.

Pffft! Your 'friend' will never get SaTC, so he shouldn't try. LOL.

Just saying.

I've never seen it, don't know a thing about it, but if all it takes is to become rich and good looking, how hard is that? I mean if you don't waste your time watching that silly stuff and focused on getting rich, you're there anyways.

Anybody can be anything they want to be unless you just let life pass you by while you just sit there and gape with your jaw wide open. All you catch is the stray bug every once in a while.

It's a fictional show. It can only ruin dating for people who cannot tell the difference between fantasy and reality. The stories are written to captivate the audience, not be true and accurate to current social trends. Niether myself nor any of my friends would die if we didn't have a date to someone's wedding. Get real. It's a show, it has not changed my expectations of men or dating. I am looking forward to the movie.

Yeah , where I live the women are going crazy for this movie when it is coming out. It's like like Star Trek fans, but with Sex and the City

But, I think the difference is....I THINK they actually LIVE by the show. Someone I know says one can learn alot from that show

It should make men aware of what real women are looking for

The sex and city watchers I know have been single for as long as I've known them. Don't think they've even given any guys a second date. Hmm...

LMAO the questions in these forums sometimes kill me. By and large, it was television - people should know the difference between real life and TV/Movies after they're like 16 years old, dont'cha think? I have to agree that some of it was based on actual people, and some of the writers used their dating history to brainstorm about episodes (i.e., "He's Just Not That Into You" from season 6).

I don't believe smart, independent, cool women (and many of them are fans of Sex and the City) that can distinguish reality from fantasy would be affected.

Thank you....my point exactly.

Don't be ridiculous!!! Do you really think that women are just vapid, blank peices of paper that absorb whatever passes in front of them???? There is this whole other side of life called 'reality'...you should check it out sometime, you might find it kinda' groovy!

This is my second hostile post today...I'm really in a pissy mood...so again I apologize, because normally I wouldn't even respond to such a foolish post!

"So did "Sex and the City" create a fantasy that no man can ever offer a woman unless he is uber rich AND hella handsome?"

I was a fan of the show, but the book it was based on was something else! The book paints the NYC elite in a bad light. Candace Brushnell (Carrie) disowned the series after the first season on HBO. The book was based on her column in a NYC weekly free rag. A a movie based on a TV show based on a book based on a weekly column. That's kind of funny.

I gotta say I am a writer and I can't afford $400 shoes like Carrie. I never dated that much or slept around that much either. How was Carrie able to write a column after all her socializing? Writing is a solitary profession for the most part.

I don't know anyone like those characters. None of them worked, but they all had money, ate out all the time, and wore high end fashions. They could afford apartments and taxis in NYC. No one took the subway and Carrie was able to walk around NYC in five-inch heels without throwing out her back. Can you say a dream?

They were very broad characters and not to be believed. They were actually written by gay men, Darren Starr and Michael King. If a woman is basing her life on a TV show, she's got bigger problems than dating. She needs to see a therapist.

Just like "Friends" painted NYC as being all white and thin. It is a fantasy.

The Muppets ruined dating for me much more than sex & the city.

Seriously. It took me forever to stop shouting "WOMAN!" and barreling after them like Animal.

"As soon as Frogs started dating Pigs and Gonzo became a chicken pimp, it was all over. "

Isn't that the truth. "ER" ruined hospitals for me. Where is George Clooney? I've never had a doctor that good looking and John Stamos has never given me an exam. Gosh, my emergency room just doesn't cut it anymore.

I watched the show and loved it...cant wait for the movie...dating is what you make it. Everyone has their own expectations of other people...and yeah it did point out a lot of flaws that men do have , but it also pointed out a lot of flaws that women have.
I think that if you date a lot of idoits and someone great finally comes along...you urself might be too damaged to treat the good guy how he should be treated...men and women are the same when it comes to daing...wether we realize it or admit it.

Fess up men! Whats the problemo? Cant face the music? Sorry but LOTS of men
are JUST as Sex and the City portray them... men treat women like "disposables" and dump them, or cheat on them as they see fit. When women FINALLY get empowered a man cant stand it! This is a great show to empower women --- to strengthen the sisterhood out there!
Women need to stick together and help each other through the many many frogs...

I agree with toomuch13's assessment of how UNREALISTIC the show was. Same deal as "Friends" was to real life. How young adults could live in Manhattan on crappy jobs was just a fantasy. Same as these four women.

Did SATC "ruin" dating? No...I more believed it OPENED MANY EYES as to what's been already happening.

I have seen many younger women aged 18-26 who have taken a lot of the "positives" they've seen in the show and foolishly modeled their lives off it. The idea that they should just remain single, free, work a job, party, look hot, and forget meaningful relationships while banging all the Mr Bigs they can find.

I've watched many episodes of SATC when it was on later at night on a free television station (I don't have cable). What I saw in it was not four women who are influencing all women out there, but more a picture painted of women today. Let's face it, we've all known some girl who has spent months or even years desperately trying to get a commitment-phobic man to commit while rejecting many guys who were ready to commit. We've known women who carry a princess complex and try their hardest to find a perfect looking wealthy male to live a Barbie Doll existence with. We've all known women who just get jaded and believe all men are evil horny pigs, pushing them all away, and we've known a few women who just want sex, passion and fun over commitment.

Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha are more or less personality aspects of modern women today. Some women out there maybe think that because of the show it's ok to be shallow, materialistic, and see men as tools. Other women look at the show and disagree with most of what is shown, like the phrase "marriage + baby = death" I remember an author of an artcle speaking about women who reject the ideas of SATC and even about being "strong and independent" because these particular women wanted to get married and be "Mrs Somebody".

Yes there is a movie coming out next week, and for all we know, Carrie might defy the odds and make the myth her reality...landing the hot, wealthy, commitment-phobe in marriage. Changing a bad man into a good man. Maybe it'll send a message to women all over that they too can find a wealthy good looking male and get him to marry if they go off and on with him for 6-7 years. Who knows?

Then again, many women will see it, laugh, cry, enjoy a show, but carry on in dating as they did even before the pilot of the show aired all those years ago. I think as men we shouldn't worry if SATC "ruined" dating, but more just watch it and maybe learn a little more about women, as well as use it as a litmus test on the women we meet.

She hates men with a passion? Leave her alone.

She expects you to provide her a life of luxury and status? Leave her alone.

She rejects you, the good man, to spend time chasing a bad man? Laugh at her stupidity, then leave her alone.

She doesn't want commitment and just wants sex? Have fun.

She's a good woman who will love you and not sit there thinking there might be someone better out there? Or she's not thinking a relationship will be the end of her independence?

--> Take her, treat her right, and never let her go.

I do not think the SATC ruined dating for men but it id change the dating world for those lucky enough to have watched it. I am sure that some women read way too much into it as do most people with TV in general. Yes it wasa cultural phenomon. That being said... I think the show did change many peoples lives in many ways..hopefully for the better... but I think it did have some detrimental side effects as well.

On the upside it has made women More open and smarter about sexual identiy. On the downside I am sure many women have unrealistic notions of what a man should be. On an up note it has let men a little in to womens minds...on the downsideit given men an unrealistic veiw into what a real woman not a New Your Debutant wants.

I loved Sex and the City. There were several elements of the show that really do happen in women's lives. As for how the show portrayed men, I can tell you I have had my very own "Mr. Big" and my very own "Berger." However, what I think the show did for a lot of women was emphasis the importance of friendship and the relationship you have with yourself.

With that said, as much as I enjoyed the show and I am sure I will enjoy the movie, it is still just entertainment and if a man is intimated by Sex and the City, perhaps he should look at the relationship he has with himself.
