| Smarts options Posted: 5/23/2008 11:51:02 PM |
dislike the idea of refering to it as "smarts". I'm sure that everyone knows at least 1 moron who has a university education. The amount of time a person has spent in school isn't always an accurate indicator of intelligence. Good points. Education level seems like a good name for it, and intelligence actually never really changes over your lifetime (IQ). Besides, it's been shown that IQ doesn't predict anyones success in careers, life, etc. Lots of high-IQ people never finish university and even end up in prison.
As for morons with university educations, yes they exist. The sad thing is a lot of them make more money than morons without a university education.
I'm very happy that this option got added - I hope the "customization requests" are not going to discourage the powers that be from adding it to the advanced search page :-)

| Smarts options Posted: 5/24/2008 1:09:01 AM | Okay, so I looked at my profile and it said, "Smarts: N/A", and I was wondering who told. Luckily, I found out that the "smarts" section had nothing to do with intelligence. It was actually education. So why not call it education? It seems like a really easy and obvious change.
As for categories, the first thing to do is simplify it by saying "highest level completed". That one immediately knocks out the "some college" and "some university" categories. People that are still in college almost always put it somewhere in their profile anyways, and the world doesn't usually reward people for going to college without getting a degree. So saying "some college" is not a necessary distinction from "High School".
The following categories work for all US people, and should also work worldwide. 1) Prefer Not to Say 2) High School/GED 3) Trade School 4) Associate Degree 5) Bachelor's Degree 6) Master's Degree 7) PHD/Post Doctoral
If you want, you can also combine Masters degrees and PHD/Post Doctoral into one category: "Graduate Degree", reducing it down to 6 categories.
With my suggested changes, I think you'll have less complaints overall.

| Smarts options Posted: 5/24/2008 3:12:36 AM | Smarts - only when spanked with a hairbrush?
Education not Smarts, please!
And drop the "some" too, please, it makes it sound like a trivial matter...
In the UK, College has a couple (at least) of meanings.
If you're as old as me (!!!) it can mean post-18 education for a certificate (e.g. in Education, a teaching qualification) or a diploma, both of which were equivalent to university degrees but where the institution was not allowed to award degrees. For younger folks, a College is now almost always post-16 education, followed instead of under-18 education in school, but definitely pre-University level, although trade qualifications post-18 are usually studied at a College...
Not sure how that can be catered for, though.

| Smarts options Posted: 5/24/2008 4:00:39 AM | I have to agree with Ferruginous in that a persons level of education is not always an accurate indication of their intelligence.
Referring to this category as 'Smarts' is an insult to anyone who has not been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to pursue a higher level of education, for a wide variety of reasons.
We should simply refere to it as education ,as suggested above, and allow people to draw their own conclusions.

| Smarts options Posted: 5/24/2008 4:57:26 AM | | Instead of drop down categories - why not leave it open for us to type in our own answers?!? We are all adults capable of putting in exactly what we want in those categories (also refering to car and income). | |
|
| Smarts options Posted: 5/24/2008 5:00:27 AM | | I think typing it in is the best idea. I should solve the problems of the items people want in their profile. In Canada, there is a huge difference between college and university. My only option is to put 'some college' because the degrees do not apply to my level of education. | |

that's definitely out as you'd never be able to find complete matches, depending on what one enters. When one attempts to match based on a field, it has to be of uniform type (i.e. not mixing apples and oranges) and spelled the same way ...
... dollars to donuts, there will be tons of people with "smarts" that will spell something wrong, or make a typo and then that would exclude them from a search result.
eg. don't laugh but the following will no doubt be possibilities if you allow users to enter what they want ..
technical tecknical techenical
That's why you don't see "Profession", as a searchable field.

| Smarts options on Match.com and eHarmony for comparison Posted: 5/24/2008 6:38:11 AM | I just saw that match.com uses the term "Smarts" to describe education levels as follows: High school Some college Associates degree Bachelors degree Graduate degree PhD / Post Doctoral
eHarmony has the following education levels defined in its match setting called "Choose the category that best describes your highest level of education." Did not complete High School High School Some college Associates Bachelors Masters Doctorate
People seem to be writing in a lot about "some college". What's important to me is the highest level attained. So whether or not someone finished a CEGEP technique in Quebec, or took courses at a community college in Ohio or finished 1 year of Harvard but didn't graduate, it's still "some college", right? It's more than High School and less than an Associates degree. [edit: I put the levels in order for the match.com list]

| Smarts options on Match.com and eHarmony for comparison Posted: 5/24/2008 6:47:21 AM | Oh, I seeeeee... D'oh...
"Some" college being different to "a lot of college", not meaning "some college somewhere or other". Oh d'oh.
/ Hurries off to change profile to Degree as that's the nearest to the truth...

| Smarts options on Match.com and eHarmony for comparison Posted: 5/24/2008 8:07:52 AM | "Some" college being different to "a lot of college", not meaning "some college somewhere or other". Just goes to show you how hard it is to design human interfaces on web sites. We humans have different ways of interpreting things!
Maybe "Some amount of college" would make it clearer without having a long explanation like my last post .
Edit: "Some college/trade courses" might take into account other folks' comments, too. Just a thought.

| NEW FEATURE: Smarts - Options & General Discussion Posted: 5/24/2008 4:50:27 PM | The word Schooling should be used to show the level of education. After all, this is plenty of FISH.
For smarts, we could have a list of famous personalities, like Einstein etc. But I'm not sure who should be used on the other end of the scale. It could get political really fast.

| NEW FEATURE: Smarts - Options & General Discussion Posted: 5/24/2008 4:54:18 PM | | You need to add college certificates. I am offended it is not there. I am not an idiot. I have a 2 yr law and security HONOURS certificate as well as a nursing certificate. My education is a lot more than some college. PLEASE CHANGE THE SMARTS LINE. THANK YOU. | |

| NEW FEATURE: Smarts - Options & General Discussion Posted: 5/24/2008 5:17:29 PM | | There defiantly needs to be more than just "some college" I have a diploma from college and too am offended that I can only put "some college" I mean I graduated I should be able to put that in there, as the degrees do not apply to me. So it would be great if it could be changed - THANKS | |

| NEW FEATURE: Smarts - Options & General Discussion Posted: 5/24/2008 6:07:25 PM | Thank you for including education, income and profession on profiles. I look forward searching using this criteria!
Eye/hair color, height/weight/astrological sign/drug use etc are irrelevant to me, I am delighted you have added some choices I find meaningful.
Your website is now equal to its competition which offered these choices all along.
Keep up the good work! | |

| NEW FEATURE: Smarts - Options & General Discussion Posted: 5/24/2008 6:09:27 PM | The selections are not as reflective of your education as they can be. What's with the "Some College"? Some of us actually completed College and have more than one diploma... but you can't reflect that unless you are a "University Grad". Could you just take off the "Some" and just leave it College/University or have the options "Some College/University" and " College/University Grad". We can find out once chatting the details. What about the Trades ppl... doesn't reflect their educational/skill levels either. Just because you weren't in C/U full time doesn't mean you're not smart. If you didn't graduate but can hold a good job... the point is moot for most of us. I'm just a little insulted that I have only a "some college" selection unless I want to lie and say Associate Degree or University to indicate I'm smarter than I look and not the stereotypical blonde! ...lol Just my opinion... maybe not shared with others. | |

there are some very smart people with only high school or ged education, and some not very smart people with degrees from supposedly top of the line schools who only got into those schools through sports/wealth/connections(i won't mention dubya here). think of the smart kid from a poorer family who couldn't afford university vs. the rich dumb-as-a-sack-of-hammers jock who got his degree in basket weaving because of an athletic scholarship. still want to use this as an indicator?
i agree with leanne, this screams shallow and elitist.

| Smarts options Posted: 5/24/2008 9:54:28 PM | Since , for some reason that escapes me, the N/A / High School option was lumped together - I now wonder if you're going to come up in a search where the user selects High School as a search criteria - best NOT, cuz that 'taint no smarts IMO.

| NEW FEATURE: Smarts - Options & General Discussion HERE Posted: 5/24/2008 9:56:48 PM | How sad this site has become over the last couple of years. It used to be fun. I actually had to talk to a girl to find out if she had a car and an education. Now, everything is right there on the profile so there is no need. Lets put what shoes a person likes, what kind of underwear they prefer, and what books they like to read. That way, we'll all be turned off before we even have to communicate with the other person. You had a great site and felt that you had to keep tinkering with it. So be it. But see you're just wrecking it. Take this site back to the way it was two years ago. Your creating a facebook where there is so much crap, you can't stand to go on it. Let us have to talk to the other person!! Let us do a tiny bit of work!! It was so much fun then. JJ | |

| NEW FEATURE: Smarts - Options & General Discussion HERE Posted: 5/24/2008 11:19:51 PM | My honest opinion is that this new feature is worthless. Here's why:
I'm a young, but very successful person with a career as an IT professional. I've been working in the professional/corporate world for about 4 years now. My skill set is equivalent to or surpasses the skill sets of many of my peers at my company. There are many things that I'm capable of doing that other people at or above my level are unable to perform. Now, I'm not going to say that I'm any "better" than anyone else, but my skills are on par with, or more than what you'd expect from someone out of college.
So, my point is ... "smarts" amount of school completed.
stands for "not equal" FYI
