I like living in the city, but some days I long for a small town somewhere with low crime, clean air, neighbors who wave and cops who don't look pissed off all the time.
If so, you better do some serious research into any small town you consider moving to: the one I grew up in had plenty of crime (I never had my car stolen in any of the cities I've ever lived in), neighbors who wave with one finger and/or spend most of their time talking about your business behind your back, and cops who are the real-life version of Buford T. Justice of "Smokey and The Bandit."
I'll take the city anytime; I like not having to be married to an automobile...of course, I have the extreme fortune to live in the greatest city on Earth.

| City or Country Posted: 4/7/2009 7:11:39 AM | | The country for sure ... peace, quiet, privacy, can have animals running free .... can go out on the deck for a morning coffee in your pjs.... can actually use your snowmobiles/quads ... people tend to be more "neighborly".... | |

| City or Country Posted: 4/7/2009 8:28:04 AM | | I would enjoy the country without those damned mosquitoes!!! Close enough to the city to have water lines not a cistern, like I had when I was a kid. Not so far away from civilization in the boonies either. I would like to be close enough if ever there was an emergency it wouldn't take long to get to a hospital. Love walking the country roads and seeing only a couple cars wave and pass you by. Be able to have a roaring fire and a few people over with guitars and sing in the summer evenings without neighbours complaining. Walk through the corn fields and the woods...awww brings back memories of when I was a little girl. Oh yeh and the smells...oh no I would never live on a farm. | |

| City or Country Posted: 4/7/2009 9:25:07 AM | Currently I live in a small town...that is dying slowly. the major employer closed shop a couple years ago, the grocery store has closed up, no relief in sight for us here. No gov't help or bailouts. We live about 30 minutes from the nearest major metropolitan center....not much there either. But, 45 minutes away is Quebec City. A few things going on there, for those who are interested. (Like the Red Bull skate run...downhill and curved....thought they were gonna kill themselves!) It is a wuiet. peaceful town...everyone either knows you or has heard of you, or knows someone who does know you. Generations of families have lived here. (I think a lot of them marry their cousins...so I've found....) The biggest going concerns here are the church and the old folks homes. Almost everyone works out of town. We don't have much but we get together and have our fun. Suppers and dances and such. Almost any excuse for a "fete" is used. (party) I think I'd prefer to be closer to a city....but, seeing as how that isn't going to happen for a long while, I'm stuck here. We have cable, high speed internet (not near as fast as in the city though!) and lousy cell phone reception. | |

| City or Country Posted: 4/7/2009 6:01:19 PM | | Well I live just outside the city and I prefer the country for sure. I really enjoy my peace and quiet. I would eventually love to move north to a small cottage on a lake and have an easy life of working and fishing and ATVs! | |

| City or Country Posted: 4/7/2009 6:21:37 PM | I have lived in the city and by the ocean and now I live in the mountains. I can go to the city and the country to visit and then come home to the mountains.
Thing is,, I almost never go to the city but I often go to the country and other mountains to party at private music festivals and Rainbow gatherings.

| City or Country Posted: 4/7/2009 6:59:47 PM | I live in the country, but I miss being near water. And hills. It's very flat here so every so often I have to take a drive somewhere and see some hills.
I work in the city then come home and sit on my front steps and watch the rabbits chase each other in the yard. Sometimes its hard to leave in the morning. The neighbor behind me has a couple of horses and I love listening to the sound of their hooves hitting the ground when they're running and hearing them call each other. Across the road in a pasture set back from the road are cattle. Sometimes at night I hear them lowing. In the morning I can hear another neighbor's flock of geese waking up down the road.
It's a short drive to a small town for groceries, medical care, and of course a wallyworld. Its a longer drive into Houston for the museums. The nearest mall is about an hour away.
I love it here, but still miss Wisconsin where I grew up. We have the tall east texas pines and lots of oak. Two thirds of the county I'm in is wooded. But I miss the lakes and hills of northern Wisconsin. And I could do without the swamps. Although after a heavy rain, all the frogs come out. At night you can sit outside and see nothing, but the world around you is alive with a million croaking frogs.
So, I guess if had a choice it would be on a small lake in northern Wisconsin. And I'd want a pier with a nice bench where I could sit in the morning, drink a cup a good coffee, and watch the sun come up.

| City or Country Posted: 4/7/2009 7:14:37 PM | COUNTRY i love it here. i'm across the river from the North Cascades National Park, all i can see from my desk is mountains and sky. i have to stand up to see the river right below my porch. i see deer and coyotes almost every day, but i have also seen bears, mountain lions and bobcats. oh i have a beaver that lives in a stump on my property. he is a recluse, much like me.
for all the women in washington that say they love the outdoors you couldn't prove it by me. finding a date up here is next to impossible. :)
