| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/2/2008 7:56:39 PM | I've been out on 5 dates from here so far ... but many more emails and phone chats; my experience was varied, though for the most part have felt alot of the men here are just out for sex and not really getting to know a woman with relationship intentions... at least not long term. I juggle this site with others to open up my opportunities . . .
As far as approach-- I have dumped at least 100 players and sex chat bs'ers ... I get so tired of being paged by men whose handles read, "1oinchthick4u" or some other such BS. Dont get me wrong-- I love and want sex as much as the next gal but I want to feel cherished, special and desired --- I like it when a man sends me an email card--- thats not too needy or too much--- I like the POF cards and roses. As for asking me out-- I prefer to take a little time to get to know a man on email and phone-though I am not shy about chatting right away on the phone. Suggesting a meeting for a date, though, I think is most appropriate by the second or third phone call if its been going well.
Well... thats my thought on the subject for now... thanks for the fun post, OP!

there aren't any pukie smileys here. gotta make your own
On topic, I've participated in various dating sites, including this one, made some great friends, one or 2 things that were sort of serious but faded out...but then I was in process of selling my house and relocating so I was reluctant to encourage anything. The area I live in now is not as heavily populated, and I knew going in that I probably was going to experience a reduction in dating, simply due to logistics and numbers. I'm OK with that. Frankly, I've had just as much, if not more, luck meeting guys IRL, but then I'm not one to sit in my house expecting the Lord to pour men down my chimney. Cindy O

| Here's a recap of 3 people I actually "went on a date" with using this site... Posted: 6/2/2008 8:53:00 PM | Guys say they have great problems GETTING dates--or are often stood up. Let me give you a quick recap of the last 3 dates--er--meet'n'greets:
1) Last month I agreed to meet someone for a glass of wine at 8:30PM two days later. He makes no less than 4 phone calls and a "dry run" to verify that we'd meet and where restaurant. When we arrive, in separate vehicles, he says he's starving...and ordered NY steak with gorgonzola. As he finishes up with me not ordering anything--he said, "You seem overweight. How many pounds overweight are you?" (Feel free to view my photos.) Then he flossed his teeth at the table and left the string in a wad on the tablecloth. So pleasant. 2) I agreed meet a fellow following a class--at 9:15 PM. As I left class, I called the guy's cell to let him know I would be 5 minutes late. He answered--he was home watching TV, a half hour across town, and says ...let me go online and check out what we agreed...sure enough he verified the 3 emails that clarified where, when, and phone numbers--duh. Four days later, he calls and leaves a voice mail telling me he got my voice mail (which I hadn't made...). So pathetic.
3) I was feeling like an online recluse, so in reply to a neighborly "fish" who had sent a friendly and complimentary email--and whose profile suggested walks and talks, I shot back a reply that we do go for a walk and talk (since we are both in the same suburb). We had a brief a phone call and arrange to meet for a walk on our downtown waterfront (it was in the daylight on city streets) with a nice respectful sounding businessman. In less than 22 minutes...the pleasant brook transformed to a swift flowing "do you find me attractive, do you like my butt, wouldn't you like to take me home with you and open a bottle of wine, so I could give you a massage and kiss you all over?" I was providing the names of all the trees... and I said "Well, gee, why don't we just get married right now?" And we were back to the cars. I opened my door and he said "Are you going to leave me now?" So pitiful.
And you got it. The 3 Ps. Yeah, go fishing--with hip waders--and a sharp stick. Some may suggest that next time I bring a stun gun.

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/3/2008 8:59:00 AM | I had been on few POF dates (five, I think - yessss, I am picky  ) in half a year or so before indeed meeting the man on here. Two months of extensive e-mailing and daily hourlong phone calls (we live about 1300 miles apart) have turned into a first date that immediately turned into a committed relationship with each of us traveling at least one week per month to make sure we spend at least two weeks per month with each other. Works beautifully so far, and we're as happy as can be. So POF definitely worked for me (and him).
Of those POF dates I went on before meeting the man  only one was relatively unpleasant (with the dude showing up in a dirty t-shirt and equally stocky worn-out sagging jogging pants and venting about his "stooopid" fellow Americans and the "idiot" U.S. President for an hour or so before I bailed (and then later was told via e-mail to f*cking go back to my f*cking home country since I obviously hated the United States so much - WTF?!? I didn't vent about his fellow Americans OR president... - even if I had wanted to, I wouldn't have been able to get a sentence in, because he was so at it...). All of the other men I met off POF were very nice, decent and interesting people.

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/3/2008 9:24:33 AM | I have been on several, and met several good people. I hope I am not the nutcase that is so often being written of... Lol! Before I came to this site, I was in one long term relationship, into the next. It's nice to just go out and meet people who you ordinarily wouldn't have met. It's even opened my eyes a bit, where I've felt more in tune with people that I wouldn't have thought would be the case.
But, in all actuality, I mirror Catinka's sentiment. For no real reason...

I checked your profile and you certainly do not need to lose weight. I am new to this online dating stuff and quite frankly, I am a little underwhelmed. Your experiences are just about what I am beginning to expect if I ever make a connection with any eligible man. Oh, well. If I learn anything from online dating sites, it might just be that I have a pretty good life being alone.

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/3/2008 4:45:14 PM | The answer is to extend your hand and say hello. If no one is contacting you, then try seeing who viewed you, who added you as a favorite, or just peruse for someone that fits your idea of datable! I've met lots of people in the last 9 months, dated at least 5 and never once was I bored;). Right now I am with a wonderful man I met here just by a simple e-mail he sent to me. We continued the chat, chat to phone calls, calls to dates, now we've been together for a few months and very happy to have met. While he chose to exit from POF, I find myself here chatting and on the forums, so still here for meeting new people and making friends. Persistence and belief in your amazing ability to just be yourself will be the bate in this pond. A good picture doesn't hurt either! Good luck! | |

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/3/2008 6:33:55 PM | I think it totally depends on the people, how many talks/emails/im's it takes before you want to meet. I met a guy off this site, we met after talking for over 2 weeks. We exchanged probably 4 emails each, then we started texting because I was on vacation and not always near a computer. As soon as I returned from vacation we decided to meet up and see where it went.
A first email from another user should simply be a salutation, a little brief introduction of yourself, maybe a comment about why you chose to message them. That's about it. If you go overboard with gifts and compliments, your sincerity will likely be questioned.

I have, met my boyfriend on here in March of 2007. One date began a lifetime!
Good for you guys! You never know who you can meet!
I've been on several dates from this website since March. I've talked to many via messages at most I only like sending two or three before I either ask for a number. Sometimes I go to msn which seems to be a popular trend and is quite annoying to talk a couple of times. I usually say that I don't really have time to talk for weeks because online and in person are two different realities. Some of my dates were good, some bad and a couple total great! I was recently seeing very sweet girl for three weeks but things just didn't work out.
People just have to stay optimistic and positive, and the opportunities will arise. Being constant, having a good profile, some decent photos and sending good messages always helps too!

Posted: 6/10/2008 8:18:21 PM | | very interesting reading, I totally relate, thats why I'm still single ..I've been on different websites, and had some dates, I believe its a crap shoot, you never know what your going to get, they are never what they say they are, I think thats the worst part of it all, to much deceit, and when they lie about their age, that a clue already, I know theres people that I've had dates with years ago and now they are younger then when I dated them... Pretty funny.. I guess we are always still hoping to find that special someone.

Although I will say I have been allot more successful meeting people on the street than here. Go figure!

| Here's a recap of 3 people I actually went on a date with using this site... Posted: 6/10/2008 8:35:16 PM | I've been on a handful of meetings (I wouldn't exactly call them "dates" considering I'd never met the person before) from this site, to mixed results. A couple were awful, most were okay, a couple were what I'd deem pretty decent. I haven't met someone I'd really like to date seriously yet, but I've made a few friends, and I don't see anything wrong with that.
First email? As far as I'm concerned, the more inventive, the better. I've gotten plenty of emails saying "hey how r u liked the profile n pics wud lik 2 get 2 kno u pls write back" or something of that nature. I've also gotten several that had a few words and a whole bunch of nonsense characters designed to get past my minimum character limit restriction. That sort of thing has always irritated the bloody bejesus out of me. A gift for the initial email is fine, or every now and then, but I think sending too many of them would be redundant. I also don't take kindly to having someone write me, then write back a half hour later angry that I haven't responded yet. What I'd like to see in an initial email is just a little bit of thought, it's always nice to hear, "hey, I decided to write to you because... I think you should write back to me because..." I'd like to know a little bit more about a person other than whatever is in the profile. Or send me a limerick. I dig limericks.

| Here's a recap of 3 people I actually went on a date with using this site... Posted: 6/10/2008 9:38:16 PM | Well i have dated some from this site but I am picky.....don't like game playing or having to entice someone with something clever.....its hard enough to make an initial contact & face either rejection or being ignored.....the dates i've gone on or meets as some have said have all been good in that we had a nice time & good conversation....the chemistry has not been there to make it exclusive, but that takes patience & i have lots of that....
but i hope you don't mind if i don't send you a gimmick rose or a silly limerick....i will however, share something of who I am.....hopefully it will be reciprocated...

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/10/2008 10:00:59 PM | 4 nice people dating more than once each.
I had to block IM here. Not a great way to connect for me.
Dating a great someone now for more than 3 months from here.
The virtual "gifts" can be fun, but usually more as something to joke about. But they get attention if you use them lightheartedly!

You need an unusually unique sort of person to ponder sending someone a limerick as their opening statement for a 2-way dialogue. Good luck with that one. :)

So glad I did cuz 2 days after being on here she sent me a message and I've never looked back since. This hot little fishy is in my net of lurve and I'm not gonna let her get away that easy! Roll on tomorrow! Good luck all!! Dazza.

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/11/2008 6:12:12 AM | Have chatted with many, phoned talked with a few, haven't dated yet, but will be meeting someone soon. We'll see where that goes. Looking good so far. I can't seem to get past the phone conversation. Almost met one man to spend the day at the local Arts Festival .. until he told me on the phone he'd voted for Bush twice and thought he was doing a good job. My profile mentions my political leanings but he explained, since politics wasn't important to him, he figured it wouldn't matter to me either. Apathy is not attractive.
To those who suggest humor is the way to go .. only if that is who you are because I find most humor not to be funny at all. If your brand of humor is important to you, use it. You'll find people who are on the same page. If you (like me) are a more serious person (who can be humorous at times but who finds the 'Robin Williams/ Jim Carey/snappy one-liners-type' a bore) .. well, just be yourself, whatever that is. It's ultimately going to connect you with those who are mutually attractive.

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/11/2008 6:17:18 AM | I have been on approximately 20 dates in the 3 years I have been on here. Sometimes we meet after a few emails, sometimes after emails and phone calls.
Most of the dates were not to my liking. Most had lots of emotional baggage. 3 were married but claimed not to be. There were a couple i liked really well but they weren't interested in me...
How to approach me? With honesty, sincereity and no discussion of sex right off the bat. Tell me about yourself and what you like to do for fun.

| How many people have actually went on a date using this site? Posted: 6/11/2008 6:40:17 AM | are you kidding, SOME OF THESE WOMEN I HAVE BEEN MARRIED TO TWICE. just kidding dude.
yes a lot of people find their true love on pof.
joe garrard was the highest volume car salesman in the world at one time. this is how he did it, its what i call the shotgun approach. he would go to a sports events, high school or college or pro sports event. he would take probably 10,000 business cards. every time the fans stood up and cheered for their team he would toss handful's of business cards into the crowd. he would work both sides home team and visiting team. cards were cheap in bulk so if he got 2 or 3 customers he was the winner no matter who won the event joe won overall with a lot of sales. he was just patient and waited for the call.
you shoot your profile out there and you start getting hits from bunches of ladies and if you are lucky 1 of those shots hits the heart of someone special and you find true love like you have never known before.
she could be reading your profile right now.
