We're not winning, we haven't won. It's a nasty quagmire we created. We can't babysit the world while our country falls apart.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 9:54:57 AM | I just want to know what Obama means by, "this is the greatest nation on the face of the earth, please join me and my campaign to change it!" If it's the greatest nation on the planet, why change it? And I've been listening to him, and have yet to hear exactly what he plans to do to fix anything. I hear lots and lots of emotion invoking rhetoric, but nothing of substance. And why is it so many people cheer for him at rallies? I don't get it. I see large masses of people who like to hear good heart string pulling speeches, yet they seem to have no idea what he's really saying. Obama makes a profound sounding statement, and people look around at each other and suddenly start cheering, but the man didn't even say anything. Lot's of monkey see, monkey do, feel good pep rally crap, but they don't even know what they're cheering about. Reminds me of when Gore was running against Bush. I was in a fast food restaurant, and I overheard some young ladies talking about who they're going to vote for. I remember one said, "Gore's cuter than Bush, so I'm gonna vote for Gore". It was at that moment that I realized that the USA is doomed. But I am convinced that if we had some sort of basic competency test requirement before being allowed to register for the vote, Obama would never have made it near this far. | |

Obama makes a profound sounding statement, and people look around at each other and suddenly start cheering We know things are bad and our options are not good so we're happy to have someone who can uplift us for a change, for the same reason some people go to church, to be inspired. It's a talent HRC and McCain would give their left nuts to have.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:07:53 AM | What amazes me is that more people voted for American Idol than voted in the Presidential primaries. As far as Barack Hussein Obama goes, I think most of his supporters are more concerned with the price of gas than they are with the future of our country. They think just pulling the troops out of Iraq will be the answer to all of our problems, but they don't stop and think about the implications of such a foolish move.
No - they don't want to talk much about that... Get an Obama supporter talking about the war and the first thing out of their mouth is, "Well we shouldn't be there anyway, so that's why we should bring the troops home." That is VERY childish reasoning.
Even if, purely for the sake of argument, you just go ahead and grant that position - that we shouldn't have gone there - it is almost irrelevant in terms of choosing the right path for Americ's future. The fact is we ARE in Iraq, whether we should be or not, so the question REALLY is - "What do we do about it now?"
Democrats LOVE to talk about pulling the troops out - but they DON'T like to talk about what will likely happen if we do:
1. All the sacrifices made over there by our troops would instantly become almost meaningless.
2. We would leave a government in place that can't prevent terrorist attacks on ITSELF, much less on us, or on US sympathizers in Iraq.
3. We would allow the terrorists to "claim victory" and turn the country into a stinking cesspool of Islamic extremism which would breed even more terrorists.
4. We would leave in place a government which would be virtually powerless to prevent the terrorists from using Iran as a staging area for more attacks on the US.
5. Said terrorists would be conveniently located right next door to their friends the Iranians, which is on the verge of developing their own nukes, if they haven't already.
The thing Barack Hussein Obama and his supporters just don't get, is that using all this simplistic anti-war rhetoric, and pulling out the troops, may actually end up marching us right into an even BIGGER war in the future.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:13:49 AM | The bottom line is that it's time to stop ****ing and moaning about The Clintons and get on with the business of learning more about the candidates and where they stand on the issues. Ignore the talking heads on ALL of the news outlets and do YOUR OWN RESEARCH !!
Was Clinton's behavior (her speech) a slap in the face to Obama as some have seen it to be ? Has she done more harm than good by not throwing in the towel ? Doers she REALLY think she can force Obama into picking her as Vee Pee ?
Again, my pick would be Janet Napolitano of Arizona, but I saw someone mention Joe Biden. The irony there is that rediculously patronizing statement hemade about Obama back when the campaigning started. That aside, he may be a viable choice.
I, too, would like to know more on Obama's plan to get us out of Iraq. I've said all along that it was this generation's Vietnam and we had no business there. America's job was to HUNT DOWN AND KILL OSAMA BIN LADEN and that could've been done via military extraction.

but they DON'T like to talk about what will likely happen if we do... It's not likely we'll be out anytime soon but it also won't be long before we're stretched so thin we can't afford to stay. The arguments for staying are the same ones that were made 40 years ago about another sh*thole. And it's odd how people who think we should stay forever don't seem to think anyone should be held accountable for dragging us there in the first place.

Who gets chosen for the lifeboats and who stays with the ship?
Are we each absolutely sure, as individuals, that we'll be selectively picked to go in one those lifeboats?
It might be worth the effort to ask specific questions before you choose the captain of the ship.

If it's the greatest nation on the planet, why change it? I think it was an awkwardly worded declaration, but the intent is to say that this country will not continue to be the greatest if the current momentum is allowed to continue unchecked.
As for a candidate acheiving success mainly through oratory, two other men come to mind: Kennedy and Reagan.
Democrats LOVE to talk about pulling the troops out - but they DON'T like to talk about what will likely happen if we do... Opinions differ about what will likely happen. Remember, the architects of the invasion were VERY wrong about what would happen post-invasion. Cheney should have listened to his own assessment of the situ back in '94.
One could easily say that Reps don't like to talk about what will happen if we stay in Iraq... "for as long as it takes." Everyone knows about McCain's 100 years comment, much to the chagrin of the McCain campaign staff.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:28:16 AM | | Right talk about taking something out of context and misconstruing it...glad to see its this tactic is not only employed by the right as the media will have you believe... | |
|
| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:30:11 AM | All diplomacy aside, the Iraqis have been given more than enough time to get troops trained and if they haven't, too damned bad. You give a hard and fast "drop dead" deadline and stick to it and then start removing troops one month at a time until total extraction is complete.
It's time this country concentrated on it's OWN domestic terrorism (lagging economy, mortgage crisis, gas prices, crime, etc...) and stay out of the affairs of other nations that would seek to destroy themselves.
|
| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:38:22 AM | See? You just don't get it. This is NOT Vietnam! Do you recall Vietnamese terrorists attacking us on our own soil???
You can't just take the attitude that we're going to pull out the troops whether the government of Iraq is ready or not, because if they are NOT ready - it is US who will pay the price for their failure!
What if Iraq erupts into civil war? What will you do then? Go back?
What if Iraq becomes a staging ground for more attacks on the US? What will you do then? Go back? Did you say "no" to that question?
What if terrorists from Iraq actually DO get their hands on weapons of mass destruction, possibly from their friends the Iranians next door, and they use them ON US. What will you do then? Go back? Did you say "no" to that question too?
Once again - start talking about the war and the Democrats immediately go to, "Well we shouldn't be there to begin with". Well gee - I think I agree! LOL If Bill Clinton had taken out Osama when he should have, 911 probably would never have even happened! We could go round and round and round ALL DAY LONG with that line of reasoning. It simply begs the question. It's alsmot pointless.
The CRUICIAL question - in terms of America's future - and the BIG question each and every voter needs to ask themselves - is not whether or not we should BE there - it is, "how best do we LEAVE there, and WHEN, and what are the ramifications of the various scenarios for withdrawal of the troops?"
There are CONSEQUENCES associated with ANY of the options open to us, and it is the DUTY of each and every single voter to be aware of those consequences and make an informed and responsible decision about who to support for President.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:48:27 AM | Mark you got to do a lot more reading... really dig into each candidate and be honest with your findings and then judge who is best fit to lead us out of this shit hole we're in. I'm a Ron Paul supporter simply because he would adhere strictly to the Constitution and his voting record. Clinton and McCain carry so much extra baggage neither would be good for the country because they are indebted to special interest groups. They are the reason why Obama is doing as good as he's doing. It's not what Obama has done, it's what Obama may be capable of doing, which is something neither Clinton or McCain can do. As for a running mate, I think it will be Joe Bidon who happens to know more than McCain about the Mideast. That way Obama can concentrate on our country and by that I mean with his cabinet. If he brings in the people I think he will, this should be fun... he'll have his hands full "Barack Hussein Obama" give me a break. I think he got his middle name long before Hussein came to power... and did we not help Hussein along the way.. do yourself a favor and look up why we are warring with Iraq and wanting to with Iran. Now I wonder also if anyone naming their kid George or****should be considered a terrorist. ... Idle thoughts | |
|
| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:48:50 AM | If one is going to take McCain's 100 years out of context...which they have....then maybe Obama didn't exactly mean what he said last night in his speech after clinching the Dem. Nomination...when he would not commit about bringing the troops home...but, did state they should be shifted to afghanistan and other Countries.
Today McCain asked Obama to join him on a 10 state Town Hall type meeting debate. Obama will not commit...yet. Thing is McCain is horrid with teleprompter speeches...he does better just discussing issues on the spot.. in small groups... with spontaneous questions. Obama does better with telepromters and prepared speeches. This is not just my opinion... All the news outlets are saying that is obvious. Even McCain's camp admits their Nominee doesn't like telepromters. McCain's staff acknowledges they are going to have to get McCain more use to teleprompters...since Obama will probably require them or some form of more structured debates where he knows the questions beforehand.

You just don't get it. You don't seem to get it. We can't afford to stay even if it was a good idea. Our only chance is to hire someone as president that the rest of the world likes and wants to help. The whole world hates Bush so much they're happy to see us go down in flames and the same will hold true for McCain.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:56:30 AM | I'm more concerned with this country's very shaky immigration policies that ALLOWED terrorists on American soil in the first place.
The easiest way to deal with "what if" is to make an example out of someone. Plain and simple: If you take an agressive action against this United States, you get blown back to the stone age and at that point, world opinion doesn't much matter. Yes it's "cowboy diplomacy" at it's worst.
Let Iraq have it's Civil war. Hell the Middle Eastern block has been fighting amongst themselves since Biblical times anyway. I can't justify continuing to pouring BILLIONS that WE DON'T HAVE into a war effort that only succeeds in getting more Americans a trip home in a body bag. Meanwhile, Americans at home are victims of a failing economy and a leadership that's displayed over and over again that they could give a rat's ass about us.
Bush just needs to come clean at this point and escort his buddy out of the bunker he's been hiding him in, then put a bullet to his brain on television.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 10:57:09 AM | What's wrong with using the man's full name? We talk about John FITZGERALD Kennedy, or Martin LUTHER King, or Richard MILLHOUSE Nixon... Or are you saying I should avoid using it simply because it's inflammatory? One poster here on POF said his local newspaper wouldn't publish his letter to the editor unless he allowed them to redact his middle name. Now that is absurd!
If simply using the man's full name causes people to question what is his heritage really is, what his religious views really are, what impact his early childhood years in Jakarta may have had on him, what his views on foriegn policy really mean, etc., etc., etc. - GOOD! Those are ALL questions that SHOULD be asked about this man! He is a candidate for President of the United States of America. Those are all fair questions that have been asked of EVERY candidate for President in our nations entire history.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 11:05:37 AM | This is no longer about 'Bush'... it now becomes a race b/w McCain and Obama. McCain dispelled, for those with unbiased ears, last night the last of the Obama chant myths that McCain would be another Bush...via noting, in his speech, the actual bills and how he differs from Bush.
As for our troops...Obama said absolutely... he would send them to Afghan. and other Countries. He has changed his position officially. McCain said he would utilize a timetable with the wisdom of the on ground military Advisors, to get the troops back here.
One candidate says what 'HE' will do, no mention of military - boots on the ground- advisory...the other says HE will listen to his Military Leaders who are in a position to know the Real story, then decide and implement accordingly.
EDIT:
And, even the Media does not deny that once McCain's led strategic addendum (based on his own personal experience) to the Iraq situation was put into effect a year ago (which he did have to fight with Bush and others to get it implemented)... positive changes for our troops have been undeniably proven. Many did not know that until last night because McCain did it quietly and effectively at the time.

All the sacrifices made over there by our troops would instantly become almost meaningless. I've always liked that argument, let more people get killed so the ones who have already died won't feel so bad. You should run for Bush's third term.

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 11:24:45 AM | Once again....this is what Obama absolutely said... "We must be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in....but start leaving we must. It's time for Iraqi's to take responsibility for their future. It's time to rebuild our military and give our veterans the care and benefits they deserve when they come home....It's time to refocus our efforts on Al Queda's leadership in Afghanistan and rally the world against the common threats of the 21st century: terrorism, nuclear weapons, climate change, poverty, genocide and disease. That's what change is"....end of quote. I believe the mention of Afghanistan is also in line with what other military leaders have been stating which is that Afghanistan is where Al Queda is currently the most threat. If Obama addresses military/security concerns then he's...what? Changed his position? ummmmmmm no, you were just unfamiliar with what he had said on this issue in the past. But on the other hand, according to the right, he's also too weak on the military......This is one of my favorite observations of the right as they currently spin in a neurotic trap of their own design. WHATEVER Obama does.......somehow it's wrong. The upcoming debates are going to be soooo much fun.......I actually thought McCain looked stronger today when indicating he wanted Town Hall meetings with Obama. For the life of me, I've never seen a stronger array of candidates for the country to choose from. | |

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 11:50:18 AM | Submitted with apologies to "The Ode to Billy Joe"
It was the Third of June, the final day of a long campaign Bill and Chelsea were out stompin while the faithful were still hoping to drink champaign And as the polls in Montana finally closed and the race was nearly complete Terry McAullife hollered to the crowd "y'all better brace for a sad defeat" And then he said with a sigh and a surrender to inevitability "Looks like Barack H. Obama is now the Democratic Nominee"
And then Harold Ickes interjected "C'mon, it's too early to write the epitaph" "Old Hillary's a scrappy fighter and we're still working to redo the math" There's still a chance with a prayer that by August we may even find A number of the Illinois senator's supporters have changed their mind But Governor Rendell shook his head despite his sympathy As he echoed "Barack H. Obama is now the Democratic Nominee"
And the moment came for Hillary to speak up and face reality While all the nation waited for her to concede the loss with dignity But to everyone's surprise, her speech was utterly devoid of any deep despair And when she was done, she made it clear her future plans were still up in the air And though she commended her democratic rival for a race he ran most expertly She'd not agree that Barack Obama was now the Democratic Nominee
But the writing was on the wall long before that fateful night Even Bill had said that morning "There's no point in continuing the fight" "But though it's true we lost the prize, there's no cause for us to weep" "We have to focus now on making Hillary Rodham Clinton the nation's Veep" "After all, 'if you can't beat em, join em' makes perfect sense to me Now that Barack H. Obama is the Democratic Nominee.
All the liberals and conservatives are bracing for a new campaign Now that the final choice has come down to Obama or McCain And as Hillary is left in the lurch to sing her political swan song While neary 18 million followers wonder just what went wrong But looking back 16 months, it's hard to imagine how it came to be That Barack H. Obama is the Democratic Nominee

| Barack Obama Wins Democratic Nomination!!!!!!! Posted: 6/4/2008 12:37:16 PM | I'm usually not short on words in here, but last night I listened live to the declaration of Obama clinching the nomination over the radio in my truck. about half way through I set up my laptop and watched it live as it happened............
All I can say is the great feeling of pride I feel at the moment, realizing that history has been made again and will happen a third time come November.
The entire country, and the entire world is watching this unfold. Around the globe; June /3/2008 (or June 4th, depending on where you live) is a day when everything began changing for the better.
This is America's first announcement to the world that the hypocritic way America has conducted itself both domestically and globaly will be changing very soon. For poor and middle class, all ethnicities, men and women alike..... this day marks the moment in history when it was finally our turn at bat.
"YES WE CAN!!"
we can beleive in the charter of this country. we can have a better future. we can get out of this massive hole dug for us by the elitest. we can overcome racial tensions. we can return to agreements over agression. we can revive the thriving working class that made this nation great time and time again. we can teach "all men are created equal" in the classrooms and for the first time in the history of this country finally mean it!
Its an amazing time to be alive to witness my people whom not long before I was born were relegated to the back of the bus , and now to the top of a major national party and soon the top of American government!!!
This is a victory for all races, genders, nationalities, and middle to lower income Americans!

| Barack Hussein Obama Wins Democratic Nomination Posted: 6/4/2008 12:38:36 PM | Obama wins the Dem. nomination and today there are highly unusual tornadic activity in Washington. It's weird to hear the News Media breaking in their own stories to report and go 'oohhhh ahhhhh'... 'the White House...looks so stormy...do they have a tornado drill, etc.'
Would they break into their news reporting for all the tornadoes which hit the Mid-West and Southern states? I think not.
It's just a cowinkiedink that Obama gets the nom. and freakish storms hit the area. Is Mother Nature sending a signal...
