Obama's for Equal Pay, Yet Pays Female Staffers Less Than Males By Fred Lucas CNSNews.com Staff Writer June 30, 2008
(CNSNews.com) - While Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has vowed to make pay equity for women a top priority if elected president, an analysis of his Senate staff shows that women are outnumbered and out-paid by men.
|
| Let the real show begin (Obama VS McCain) What are your thoughts Posted: 6/30/2008 6:06:42 AM | Who determines Senate staff pay, the Senator they work for ?
Those salaries are set by the government, not the Senator.
Categories of staff and their approximate number include:
* Personal Staff--who work for individual Members of Congress--11,692 * Committee Staff--who work for either the majority or minority on congressional committees--2,492 * Leadership Staff--who work for the Speaker, Majority Leader, Minority Leader, Majority Whip or Minority Whip--274 * Institutional Staff-- majority or minority party floor staff, and non-partisan staff: police, legislative clerks, building, janitorial--5034 * Support Agency non-partisan StaffCongressional Research Service [747], Congressional Budget Office [232], and General Accounting Office [3,500].
Personal Staff A House Member employs an average of 14 staff; the Senate average is 34. House Members may not exceed 18 full-time staff, and 4 part-time. Senators have no limit on the number of staff they can hire. Their staff budget depends on the size of the population of the state they represent California Senators get a lot more money for staff than do the Senators from Montana, for example. Each Member of Congress can distribute staff among their Washington and District/State offices as they wish.
In practice, staff salaries vary widely from office to office. The following average salaries are provided by the Congressional Management Foundation [CMF]. For more information, visit the Congressional Management Foundation website. CMF is a Washington-D.C. based research and management consulting firm, serving primarily congressional clients. It conducts regular surveys on congressional salaries and staff practices.
http://www.c-span.org/questions/weekly35.asp
So, the way I read it, Obama's not deciding their salaries - the government is. That will take a change in legislation to overcome those restrictions.
Please correct me , if I am wrong here.

| Let the real show begin (Obama VS McCain) What are your thoughts Posted: 6/30/2008 6:26:29 AM | ^ ^ ^ ^ You're wrong, but there is a limit on the top salary which is 10 percent less than a member of Congress. However, participation on a committee can increase that pay. Generally the top salary is given to the Chief of Staff, but if a Senator or Representative is having an affair with his mail clerk, there is nothing stopping him from giving that mail clerk a $150k salary.
18 years ago I was a Chief of Staff to a Senator (although they were called AAs in those days), and made the top salary in the office. The same rules weren't in force that long ago, but I did make less than my Senator.
Here's an FAQ from LegisStorm, a company that tracks salaries of legislative staff. It explains how salary determinations are made (which is sole discretion except for the salary cap).

|
| Let the real show begin (Obama VS McCain) What are your thoughts Posted: 6/30/2008 6:31:20 AM | So a Senator decides the pay ?
So if I apply for position X, does that get decided from some government list of approved job descriptions and associated salaries.
In other words, how much control does the Senator involved have paying his staff ?
Are staffer salaries based on a formula like other federal employees? Answer: No. A staffer’s salary is wholly determined by the member of Congress for whom he or she works, although the staffer salary is capped. As a result, staffer pay can vary widely.
http://www.legistorm.com/salaries/faq.html#Are_staffer_salaries_based_on _a_formula_like_other_federal_employees_
My member of Congress’s chief of staff seems to be making only a few thousand dollars each quarter. How can that be?
Answer: Often, chairmen of committees have a chief of staff for their personal office who also draws a considerable salary from the committee. Therefore, to see a more accurate picture of what this person makes, you must add the personal office salary to the committee salary. One advantage LegiStorm provides that the original hard-copy records do not is that you can click on a staffer’s salary page and see the entire salary history, including all work for personal offices and committees.
Why is the salary data not up-to-date?
Answer: Salary data is not published “real-time” because the data simply isn’t available. The House and Senate each publish books with the salary data, with the House publishing quarterly and the Senate publishing every six months. It can take about three months for that data to be published. Because the data is released in hard-copy form, it takes us several weeks more to enter the data and to edit it for accuracy. Why do you not have staff salary data for certain members of Congress on your site? Answer: We have privately financed travel data from 2000 through to the present time. We do not have congressional staff salary data going back that far, however. Therefore, there will be some members of Congress who were in office in 2000 or after but left before the start of our salary data.
So he decides the pay, but there's a cap on it ?
So if we are talking about women versus men, men could hold more superior positions and this get better pay. I'm not saying this is the case, but it's a possibility.

| Let the real show begin (Obama VS McCain) What are your thoughts Posted: 6/30/2008 6:32:11 AM | No. It's Obama's way of saying that any money recovered from the parent who owes child support should go to the custodial parent instead of paying back the state for the welfare that custodial parent received.
Once again....I will repeat....HE LEFT OUT THE WORD "MOTHERS"! LOL
I do not agree with welfare agencies taken money out of child support, but my major issue here is that Obama is NOT addressing deadbeat mothers,,he's only addressing deadbeat fathers! Are we to believe that only deadbeat parents are men? I DO NOT THINK SO! Obama being raised by a single mother should know better than to believe otherwise, he needs a new advisor and soon!
I tried to check out the link you provided...it's not working.
I have a question in reference to this act? If it's titled "RESPONSIBLE (note the word Responsible)Fatherhood Act, then why are issues such as visitation and custody and parenting time and access denial not even mentioned? Obama is only addressing ONE part of this puzzle, there is many other pieces he needs to address when introducing a bill such as this. ONE MORE TIME..HE LEFT OUT DEAD BEAT MOTHERS!

In other words, how much control does the Senator involved have paying his staff ?
As I said above, except for the cap, salaries are completely up to the discretion of the Senator or Representative. He or she can pay their mail clerk the top salary if they so desire.
However, because of oversight by watchdogs (like LegisStorm), you don't see many inappropriate salaries because the media would report it, and the Member would be asked a lot of uncomfortable questions by journalists.
This is the reason for the decline in inappropriate compensation. There is no LAW that dictates the salary of any staff member, EXCEPT FOR THE SALARY CAP.

Local The obama Supporter Takes Issue With No Drill Policy
Turmoil in Coffee Shop Leaves Crowd Amused

A local supporter of The obama who probably wants to remain anonymous told on-lookers that he was getting tired of these G** D*** gas prices and nobody is doing nothing about it.
Several of those in attendence, during one of his daily outbursts, reminded the man that The obama was wanting to make gas scarcer and more expensive with higher taxes and a no drill policy.
Provoked by a giggling waitress and several smirks from by-standers he loudly and strongly questioned a The obama victory this November and abrupty left without leaving a tip.

| Let the real show begin (Obama VS McCain) What are your thoughts Posted: 6/30/2008 1:11:44 PM | You guys are pitiful. Deal with it! President Bush screwed up sooooo bad that the country is about to elect a black man to the Presidency....it's okay....black people don't want revenge for slavery, Jim Crow racism or anything else for that matter. If we were that angry we would have went Alquieda on your asses a long time ago. We are a peaceful people for the most part if you can't tell that after 400 some years then you don't know us at all.
You don't seem to realize no matter how many times its repeated....its not at all about color to most people. It might be in YOUR head, but its not the general public's feelings.
Why don't you think Obama can be a bad choice for president simply because he has bad ideas? He would be a bad choice no matter what his color is/was. I simply dont like what his ideas are. His ideas and his beliefs are things that have me deeply worried. And if you're not worried, try paying attention to what his beliefs are and who his friends are, what his wife says about America and where his entire family goes to church...etc, etc. Those are only some of the reasons for me. Try to listen to what he ISNT saying. Please lay your cards down, its not about color sir. That's just a cope out.
Heres the icing on the cake. This shows Obamas character, which in my opinion is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS.
"If Barack Obama's campaign wants to question John McCain's military service, that's their right," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said after Clark's appearance Sunday. "But let's please drop the pretense that Barack Obama stands for a new type of politics. The reality is he's proving to be a typical politician who is willing to say anything to get elected, including allowing his campaign surrogates to demean and attack John McCain's military service record."

Mr Obama has learned well from the Clinton's.
A woman went to her doctor for advice. She told him that her husband had developed a penchant for anal sex, and she was not sure that it was such a good idea. 'Do you enjoy it?' The doctor asked. 'Actually, yes, I do.' 'Does it hurt you?' he asked. 'No. I rather like it.' 'Well, then,' the doctor continued, 'there's no reason that you shouldn't practice anal sex, if that's what you like, so long as you take care not to get pregnant.' The woman was mystified. 'What? You can get pregnant from anal sex?' 'Of course,' the doctor replied. 'Where Do you think liberals come from.'

McCain pays the women in his office more than the men. Obama pays the men much more than the women.
Military service is only one aspect of being Commander-in-Chief...
But....
McCain got shot down 3 times. He could have not gone back after the first two times. Why didn't Obama volunteer for service in the Military if he planned on becoming President? I know some Presidents have not served...but, one would think a person would want to if they were on track/had dreams of being Commander-in-Chief... simply out of respect for the Country they want to elect them to the highest office.
Just a couple of things I felt like mentioning which is applicable to this thread.

New Threat: The 'Obama Market' By DAN DORFMAN June 30, 2008
As if investors didn't have enough to worry about, a new land mine is lurking: "the Obama market."
That's what I heard over the weekend from a veteran investment adviser, Charles Allmon. "Political ramifications represent a significant added market risk that should not be ignored," he says.
Initial polling suggests that Senator Obama will be the next president, a view Mr. Allmon shares. An Obama presidency is certain to mean a big tax increase, he says. He also points to the likelihood that the senator will seek to raise the marginal tax rate to 52% from 39.6% and hike the capital gains tax rate to at least 25% from 15%.
"He'll cause more damage to the stock market and even make Jimmy Carter look good," Mr. Allmon says. "Senator Obama is leading a children's brigade, but the problem is children shouldn't be leading this country."
Wall Street, they say, is a young man's game. Try telling that to our 87-year-old worrywart, who has been doggedly tracking the stock market for more than half a century and who offers a compelling argument that money managers in their golden years still have the brain power and analytical savvy to strike gold.
Mr. Allmon, who manages about $200 million of assets — individual, pension, and profit-sharing money — is outperforming this year's crummy market, with a modest gain, he says, of between 1% and 2%. He attributes this showing to a conservative investment strategy, notably huge cash reserves (currently at 80%).
"You have to be crazy not to be conservative in this kind of market unless you're willing to take a bath," he says.
Further, the veteran adviser, who publishes a 46-year-old monthly investment newsletter, the Growth Stock Outlook, out of Bethesda, Md., made a marvelous market call last July with the Dow Jones Industrials hovering around 14,000 and bullish sentiment rampant. In an ominous warning to subscribers, he urged extreme caution, predicting the Dow was on its way to 8,500 to 9,000, which he noted was a forecast that "could be on the high side."
With the index having plummeted more than 2,500 points since then, his crystal-ball gazing talent is not to be taken lightly.
At the time of his forecast, Mr. Allmon recalls, some subscribers rang him up and told him, "You're nuts." But now, he says, "They're beginning to recognize something is really wrong in this country, and an 8,500 to 9,000 Dow is very possible." Thursday and Friday's wicked two-day Dow decline of 465 points, or nearly 4%, he says, may be a prelude to that drop.
Why a further decline? "Because there's quicksand all around us," Mr. Allmon says. "We're in an economy that's tanking, we're looking at the most significant economic downturn since the 1930s, and the dollar is going to hell."
All of this means that the Federal Reserve will have to raise interest rates to protect it and to stem inflation, he says. Another of his worries is profit deterioration, evident by a 25% drop in the S&P 500's first-quarter earnings.
Mr. Allmon, who believes we've actually entered a period of stagflation (a mixture of rising prices and slowing business activity), is also alarmed at the deteriorating housing market, which, he expects, will get a lot worse.
"Close to 20% of this country's homes are under water," he says, a figure he believes will eventually rise to 25% to 30%. In this context, he's especially critical of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for making loans at 105% of equity. "They're encouraging deadbeats to become homeowners, which is a stupid thing to do," he says. "It's like trying to buy a car with no money down. It just won't happen."
Mr. Allmon is convinced that home prices are headed down for at least the next three to four years. As a result, he says, "people will see the biggest asset they own decimated, which means they're going to cut back like crazy on their spending."
Given his glum market view, it's incomprehensible to him that Wall Street is pushing people to buy stocks. "They live on commissions, so maybe what else would you expect them to do," he says.
Although bearish, Mr. Allmon favors a select number of stocks he feels can buck a falling market. In particular, he likes gold shares Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining, Philip Morris International, Altria, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Schlumberger, and Nestlé.
His favored strategy at this point: a boring four-letter word spelled c-a-s-h. He also likes Treasury bills, namely six months, and nothing more than two years, because interest rates have to go up, he says.
Mr. Allmon's parting words: "We're in a bear market that's got more to go; don't get sucked in."

Treating non veterans as second class is what the founders were trying to avoid by putting a CIVILIAN in charge of the executive branch. So arguing military experience is just moot. Obama has a better brain and better plans. I think Obama has the vision and should put Gen. Honore in charge of cleaning up the republican damage to our country.

So I guess paying property taxes is just for the little people....
Mrs. McCain, San Diego County Would Like a Word
When you're poor, it can be hard to pay the bills. When you're rich, it's hard to keep track of all the bills that need paying. It's a lesson Cindy McCain learned the hard way when NEWSWEEK raised questions about an overdue property-tax bill on a La Jolla, Calif., property owned by a trust that she oversees. Mrs. McCain is a beer heiress with an estimated $100 million fortune and, along with her husband, she owns at least seven properties, including condos in California and Arizona. San Diego County officials, it turns out, have been sending out tax notices on the La Jolla property, an oceanfront condo, for four years without receiving a response. County records show the bills, which were mailed to a Phoenix address associated with Mrs. McCain's trust, were returned by the post office. According to a McCain campaign aide, who requested anonymity when discussing a private matter, an elderly aunt of Mrs. McCain's lives in the condo, and the bank that manages the trust has not been receiving tax bills on the property. Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: "The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due."

| Let the real show begin (Obama VS McCain) What are your thoughts Posted: 6/30/2008 4:32:01 PM | I am not politcally alinged with either 'party' and think we need to get away from that in as it is too much like a cluster **** of individuals feeding off each other in order to further their own careers.
Which is what America has become and we al have the opportunity to firther ourselves which is good, but at the price of not doing the job we are being paid to do, that is not right in my mind.
I currently work a mundane but way more busy retail job after having worked in the office world most of my life (the last 13 years before now in the mortage biz as an office grunt mostly). I put my best in to doing what I do now as I need the job and I also think it is important to give customers the service they deserve and expect.
The government should take that attitude as well. I pay taxes AS does everyone else to pay for the salaries of wealthy to begin with people who get into office and play games with my rights and my life.
It is not right, but unless we the people make a stand and tell the 'elected' officials we are sick to death of it, then nothing will change.
I was raised to be independent and I have been.
I was also raised to believe I count in the scheme of things. And that America was formed as a rebel country that had ideals and beliefs that I liked.
Now, I just don't know... seems it is all a bunch of high school crap that doesn't appeal to the majority of the citizens who try to make it in this country.
I am tempted to once again put in a vote of 'none of thee above'.
Obama does not represent me and McCain certainly does not. They are both wealthy ppl who are looking to advance their careers.
It has nothing to do with representing we the people and no matter who 'wins' not much will change.
The only thing that will make a change for the better is if the American citizens again stand up and say ' I am sick of this crap and I count and I am not playing your stupid childish games anymore.'
'Electing/hiring yet another out of touch wealthy person who is so out of touch with the now even more normal American citizen who struggles to keep a roof over their head and gas in a car to get to the underpaying and over worked job in order to survive is just folly on our part.'
I don't by any means have all the or even part of the answers, but neither canidate seems to have a ****ing clue either.
Maybe we should be more like Sweden, the well known neutral country.
Sad to me that the whole issue with the Dems centered on 'wow, ****ing America finally let a black man and a woman get in the race.'
Big deal, other countries have had female leaders and black men as leaders. I guess America, the country that is made up of all nationalities, is behind the times on that one..lol.
We are still a new country in the scheme of things world wide, yet we act like we are all that and a bag a chips when we can't even take care of our own.
I am an angry American I guess.

| Let the real show begin (Obama VS McCain) What are your thoughts Posted: 6/30/2008 4:50:39 PM | Getting away from the Military aspect, one can really look at the Issues. McCain has 20 years experience in Congress. Obama less than 5 with half of that campaigning for the Presidency.
Both have flip flopped or one can say Both have adjusted their positioning due to new factors affecting America.
McCain has 'adjusted' less dynamically, taking into account the years of service in Congress vs. Obama's. McCain has had to deviate from his Central positioning less than Obama simply because it's a fact that Obama is the most Liberal voting Senator of 2007. Coming from a far Right or Left to Center is a much greater 'adjustment'. McCain has not been far Right whereas Obama has been far Left. That's the truth. Nothing more or less.
McCain's brain/experience devised the surge of last year which has resulted in an 80% decrease in deaths in Iraq. McCain devised it and fought for it...even against some of the Rep. and against the Dem. It got done finally and the result is undeniable. Fact, not fiction and undisputed by both sides of the aisle.

Retired General Clark is a Obama supporter. Obama took the moral highground and did not jump on that band wagon, in fact, Obama praised McCain's military record and made a public statement denouncing Retired General Clark's accusations of denouncing McCain's military record.
I also want to make it known that McCain once denounced an ad which was showing Obama in a negative light, McCain ALSO made a public statement referencing this and stated it was slimey politics and he would not have anything to do with it.
I like viewing the moral highground both are taking during this presidential bid. Thumbs up to them both for not engaging in personal mudslinging.

It has nothing to do with representing we the people and no matter who 'wins' not much will change. Great post Kari, but I so hope you are wrong about this.
The only thing that will make a change for the better is if the American citizens again stand up and say ' I am sick of this crap and I count and I am not playing your stupid childish games anymore.' That is precisely what we're doing and that is why Obama will be our next President.
