Posted: 6/5/2008 9:37:35 AM | Another instance where the 'body type' categories don't really cover it all.....I can't claim Thin because of muscle mass, yet looking around I'm nowhere near 'average' for 40+ males in my area.....& tho I don't compete in sports anymore (other than sailing), 'athletic' was the closest discriptor.
I'd chose 'fit' if they had that category......& use that term in my profile to describe my preferred type in a mate; most ladies seem savvy enough to realize that I'm probably not actively looking for other body types. Certainly wouldn't turn down a date w/ a great lady ONLY based on body type, tho.
As a big generalization, I'd say 'athletic' types will be less likely to be looking for a larger partner than some of the other classifications.....if that's any help. | |

I do prefer women who have the same body type as me..just my thing. I know lots of thin/athletic guys who love the curves. I doubt there is much in the way of consensus, | |

Call me shallow but hey I'm in the gym/running 6 to 8 hours a week and I want a woman that also cares enough about herself that she at least does something to maintain her appearance.
I do have a beef with the lack of a weight category though... My idea of what is thin, athletic, and average etc... is probably different than what others define this as... Personally I think the average American is overweight, and I also think their definition of what is "average" is influenced by their own size. Just as an example, in most european countries I wear a large, in Asia I wear an XL, here in America I wear a medium or small depending on the cut...
Athletic can mean anything from a lightly muscled guy all the way up to body builder...

I've seen guys that were 150 lbs be athletic. Lance Armstrong for one. I'd say body builders are athletic also. And in the off season they range from chubby to down right fat to help build mass. They start cutting pre comp to get the definition.
Plus most of em have a gut anyway from the HGH. Even during the season. | |

As such I'm very bendy so do tend to go for the same in a woman.
Occasionally is one thing...but sheesh...all the fricken time? Count me out
This is the attitude that would make me discount someone.
Keeping fit gives you a natural high every day but its only maintained if you exercise every day.
Someone who thinks they should maybe put in a little effort occationally just for appearances is on a totally different wavelength to me.
A fit mind starts with a fit body & I wouldn't be attracted to an unfit mind. | |

Posted: 6/6/2008 7:34:31 PM | Thanks for all the responses. I could actually see everyone's point. I was mostly curious, because I have dated guys from both end of the scale. I actually don't have a preference with body type. If we have fun and laugh together, then there's a shot. For me personally, I'm stuck in the middle somewhere. I'm overweight... have been most of my life, but I'm not a slob or a couch potato by any means. I actually gained weight a few years ago because my ex was the fast food/buffet junkie. I'm the healthy one! LOL I've since lost that weight, and then some, since he's left. I've had 2 kids, but I actually weigh less now than when I first got pregnant. I like being active as far as finding things to do. I've also recently joined a gym and am starting to eat better. So I'm taking the steps I need to become healthier and build up some stamina to keep up with my kids, as well as have energy left over for other things  I do have other interests that aren't on my profile, but I didn't list them because I don't have time to do them, i.e. swimming, tennis, soccer, weight lifting (favorite of mine actually). So it's not that I wouldn't have the same interests as someone "athletic" it's the time, and right now the stamina... but I'm working on it. Thanks  | |

Maybe if people were not against physical fitness, they would not have preventable physical problems. When you have back problems and you need a walker to get around, you will regret being lazy. | |

1- Really strong that you are able to stand up for that...I think that plus sizes are sexy
2- Most/some guys don't want an equal....they feel less powerful or stranded in a sense...
3- My last lover ---incredible size- small frame something that doesn't usually go hand in hand...ha hah...no laughing matter...
4- It ain't the size- IN ANY RESPECT- that matters- all heart ..you are beautiful- I know...I have seen you!
5- My Body type is athletic but some of *MY* chosen have not responded....

Their time is divided between work, sleep and exercise - so they don't have anything to talk about. That's a big  .
And an athletic body definately does not make up for an ugly face or personality. | |

That's a false generalization. Not all or most athletic men are dumb, boring, or obsessed with the gym. They might spend a decent amount of time at the gym. But many of them have other interests as well. If someone had stated that all or most fat people are lazy, unhealthy, have bad body odor etc, they would be harshly criticized for making those comments. Same thing should apply here. | |

Posted: 6/7/2008 8:22:50 AM | Not all "athletic" men are looking for an "athletic" girl. But I do think that alot of men who are in shape are looking for a partner who is as well. And the same can be said for women.
I am not athletic by any means.. I am fit. I work out 3-4 times a week but I am not a muscle bound hard body. And I don't expect the people I date to be either but I do want someone that takes care of themself and that is active. No couch potatoes here. Some men actually prefer a girl with some soft curves.
For the record I have met people that have athletic listed on thier profile and they are nowhere near athletic. But sometimes when given those drop down boxes it is difficult to choose. I think they should offer the option of "fit" for body type because you can be in good healthy shape but not an athletic hard body.
So if you see someone that you are interested in, you really should not be intimidated by thier body status. Send them a message and if they aren't interested then oh well... it is not the end of the world. | |

OP.. do not let your body discourage you from contacting men who qualify themselves as 'athletic'. I myself certainly do not set pre-requisite categories for women, such as athleticism, general attraction either exists or it does not and as it is subjective preference there's no way (unless obviously specified) to be certain that just because someone thinks they are 'athletic' that they will not be attracted to you, physically.
Now, often times people who are 'athletic' seek out similar qualities in potential partners, this is certainly true... but honestly, coming from a strictly personal perspective, there are far bigger fish to fry on the relationship scene than whether or not my date (or any other generic term applied to woman I am seeing/interested in) hits the gym 5 days a week like myself.
While I do believe physical attraction is essential, all I am suggesting is it may not in all circumstances adhere to such aspects as insanely vague body type descriptions... I know it does not for myself, what so ever, I rather prefer more 'average' women personally which many find not only amazingly surprising but certainly isn't a 'reflection' (as I have been told) considering my own physique etc.
Bottom line: People create their own biggest problems. Assuming anyone would be discouraged because you are not the same body type of as them is one of them and not a mandatory regulator for chemistry. Try contacting a few, you've got nothing to lose, and you may be suprised by the results and/or level of interest despite that 'body type' difference.

If you stand up straight...with feet together......head straight looking forward..... and bend just your neck to look down at your feet.... and you cannot see your feet......you are probably a tad too big for me...... This test does not apply and cannot be done fairly if a woman is well endowed in the breasts.......aka.... big boobies.

There are many females out there that are very healthy, smart, and funny that happen to be a few pounds overweight. I would certainly date these women
It should be said though, that obesity is a deal breaker. A few extra pounds overweight is okay (Body Mass Index 24 27). If the girl is on the high end of the overweight category or obese, I wouldn't date her and there is a good reason for it. Overwight people tend to be less healthy. | |

Posted: 7/6/2008 4:40:27 PM | I didn't generalize and I realize the last two posts probably weren't aimed at me, but I think this is something that CAN be generalized. I believe that most athletic men wouldn't want to date plus-sized females.
Are there exceptions? Yes. However, generally speaking I think it is safe to say that if a man is athletic, at a minimum he's going to PREFER a woman that is not overweight. This is a preference rather than an absolute rule.
Generally speaking, women have longer hair than men. Are there exceptions? Yes, but this doesn't make the generalization any less valid. | |

I say this because I have known a lot of high level athletes and they have a term called "non" for non athletes. They would rather date other athletes because of the shared dicipline and focus they share plus if they happen to be doing this for a profession it is easier to deal with the rigors of that job if you understand and have similar points of view.
Now if you are talking about athletic body types then I think the previous posters have covered that. | |
