For Musicians - Could you date a deaf person?
Posted: 6/21/2008 8:45:35 PM
What matters is if someone is a good person. I would date a deaf person. I have known people who are deaf. Just yesterday I saw someone who is deaf. He wears a hearing aid and can read lips so as long as you talk near him and loud, we communicate fine. Just like many blind people can still see a little and are not completely seeing black. From what I understand they see shadows and cloudiness depending on their level of blindness.

I remember watching a true story movie about a married Woman who developed MS and the husband started having an affair cheating on her with another woman. He eventually left her at a time when his wife needed him the most! What ever happened to "in sickness and in health?" This has happened many times in life and I think it is very sad and just not right.

I do understand that the question is more to a musician/artist (which I am) but I just read the disability and amputee threads.
To Spartanis: I like your music a lot. And yes, there ARE fans of Vangelis still around, as well as Cusco, Tangerine Dream, Tomita, Walter/Wendy Carlos, and others.
I knew that, and thanks :)
One thing I noticed with your music - I only listened to the first 8 or 10 selections - is that, on the bass-heavy songs, the bass seems a little muddy, like listening to it through a pillow. That's probably just my own preference though, as I much prefer sharper, thumpier bass, than "boomy" bass.

Ah thank you for that!. Yes, it DOES seems muddy, but not sharper, nor crisper, as I wanted. I think its to do with my deaf level. That stuff up my er.. "perception"? of bass hearing lol. Sometimes i wanted a nice acoustic long from loud to soft bass note, but most times i like a short melodic ones. But alas! im still learning!
Oh, a question: On your website, there's a link to the Blender Project (it went to a blank page). That wouldn't happen to be referring to the 3D modeling program of the same name (Blender), would it?

Yup the very one. Been at it for a year now.. im good at modeling anything, just right now trying to wrap my already exploded brain around the idea of materials and stuff. I hang out usually in Blendernewbies.com Them great pple there. Check it out!

Quick answer is yes. I'm into bass frequencies anyhow and that you can feel.

music is basically the bane of my existence

wow

could i date a deaf person

there really is no good answer to this question

if i say noooo..

i could potentially put off an amazingly hot supermodel that just happened to have a land mine blow up next to her or something

and we all know

everyone does music

...

to get the ladies

..

or the guys.. i guess if your female

lol.. jk

however

the base question still remains

im going to say

...

no

to being completely deaf

i just dont believe whoever im meant to be with will indeed be deaf

now granted

if some girl knocks me over the head with a mallet

drags me off into the sunset

and happens to be a bit hard of hearing

so be it

lol

Yes. Of course. Deaf people can "hear". I'm a writer and keyboard and strings player. I've three people, friends, family, who are clinically "deaf". Not diseased, mind. Not a disability deafness. We use both the Hungarian method and bone conduction.

Most people don't like my music anyway. So I would actually love to date a deaf lady. Scott

My last gf loved heavy metal, as my name implies I am into classic country. So when I would start playin' Johnny Cash or Waylon Jennings she just wanted to scream. And Sometimes I would crank it up and play Buck Owens and it was actually funny to watch her, she would throw things at me or cover her ears..... Finally she just left me alone whenever I would play which is what I wanted her to do all along. So yes, I would love to date a deaf girl. Another up side to dating a deaf girl, I dont know sign language, so she couldn't nag all the time either... Scott

LOL chickin Picker.. I prefer country music over metal any day. As I am deaf, i just cannot understand how anyone determine Heavy Metal as music? its all screeches, screams, and noise :/

As for sign language? so? I don't sign language. but if i do meet a deaf girl, a pen and paper comes in handy, plus body language as well as facial expression.

Now get this, most deaf people read lips. Aint that cool? they can work out whats being said from across the room, even if they were whispering lmao (no i don't lip read very well.. i learned to use my ears with my hearing aids)

^^ funny how the more i drink, the better i am at lipreading... same thing with playing pool so if ever at a pub/billards, i'll understand you then beat you in a game
and naturally then sing to the music in the background
^^ sticking with the topic here

lol Chickenpicker & Ravens_whisper

Well, I'd definitely consider dating &/or be friends with a deaf man that I really really liked but marrying one... hmm...? I guess it would have to be decided on individual basis too...
Even if they are just tone-deaf could be a very 'unhelpful factor' :) lol Probably more so lol (Or if they really really like heavy metal or techno/house music lol)

I'm intrigued by sign language so I wouldn't mind learning some of that...

I always wanted someone to make music with, who can possibly sing & play an instrument, or a few... & IF (big IF!!) I ever had a family it would be great to have an 'orchestra'/rock band :)

Matty - soo interesting about making music, even if you're deaf!! I like some of your tunes (even if I'm not much into the whole Vangelis/electro thing...!!)
/& I've been looking into Blender myself... Is it difficult to learn, for a newbie? I've read so... still curious, how many months it can take to make something sorta 'decent'/

if i have ever have a family

(if really meaning... )

i dont want to think about it, because im no where near that step

but if....

...

let me stress the ( if ) one more time

i had a family

i would enslave them to music

i would force them to be in my totally cool band

named

well

" Totally Cool "

and we would tour the world

...

of course

" Totally Cool "

would be a goth / rock hybrid band

that hated the world, for the mistreatment

of

" man-bear-pigs "

( ahem... south park reference )

and we would play for their SURVIVAL

THE WORLD NEEDS

mo

man-bear-pigs

amen

Like one of the ladies said earlier - I too have mild tinnutis - caused through singing opera, karoke, rock etc. Like her I have to wear ear plugs to protect myself in over noisy surroundings.

I understand having a passion and wanting someone to share to the highest level. For instance painting. However not everyone will understand the reasoning behind a painting for instance despite being able to see and having someone try to relate it to you.
So in my view, it is more from a support level that is important.

To have someone that supports you in your passion/hobby is worth its weight in gold whether they understand it fully or not.

I'm not a musician, but music is a big part of my life. Myself, I'm hard-of-hearing. I can personally tell you that on those days when I am having trouble hearing and deciphering sounds, I rely on the vibration of music to know what the music is. Sure, the other deaf people may not hear the music or words, but if they can feel the rhythm of the vibrations, that's all that should matter. If they love music and you like them as they are, it shouldn't matter if they are deaf or disabled. Personally, I would date someone who loves music just as much as me (if not dancing), regardless the disability.

I wouldn't have a problem with it. One of my old friends was deaf and he had the biggest system in his car that you'd probably ever see because. He might of been deaf, but he could still feel the beat and the music through the vibration from the system.
