When it comes to bodybuilding I DO know my stuff. I have litereally researched for thousands of hours on the topic and I do not appreciate your negative ageist attitude.

I sympathise with your situation, however you must realise that yours was vastly different to Iconoclast's as I am pretty sure she would be able to lift a 2lb barbell at minimum.

Your road to recovery from a serious injury would obviously have been different to her road to increasing general grip strength. Thus your anecdotal claims cannot be applied.

For example, no one in their right mind would advocate someone coming out of major leg surgery to perform heavy squats as a rehabilitative exercise - but does that debunk using squats to increase leg strength? No, as it has it's tried and tested place in a "strength" program, which is ridiculously different to a "rehab" program.

She should only lift a weight that she is comfortable with, "heavy ass" was probably innapropriate for her goals, but the idea remains the same.

Here is a good article covering most aspects of grip strength training: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/par15.htm - Like I said before, no amount of tennis ball squeezing or typing will make you magically pull a 727.5 lb one handed deadlift.

Lastly, where do you think grip strength comes from? What do you think you are training when you are squeezing that tennis ball? Let me know why clutching something very heavy is less efficient than squeezing something soft repetitively for building brute strength. If your argument were true every writer, computer geek e.t.c would have no problem crushing one of those grippers in the article to death!

Your attitude about improving grip strength through other means was equally condescending so if you do not appreciate it, don't dish it out. You could have made the same comment in a different way. Both actually will increase grip strength so why is it so important for you to tell people that the other method does not work? Women's bodies are geared much more toward the development of small motor skills and that may be one of the reasons why the deadlifting does nothing for her grip strength if she is a regular lifter and the grip doesn't improve.

This is not the thread to seek sympathy for being in a coma. This is a thread about weight lifting.

Since you clearly have no idea what we are talking about, it is better if you just leave before you make a bigger fool of yourself. Womens bodies are not magically geared differently and your poor advice is the kind of thing that will hold people back from developing properly.

Typing and squeezing tennis balls is not going to magically let me hang more than 400lb off my arms thanks.

Not if you are negative like that you will not!

"One day soon, I will lift 400lb" is what you should have said.

I'd be thrilled if I could just bench 100 pounds. I think I'll try the straps. My friend says my deadlift sucks because my form is bad. I dont want to scrape my shins so I think I lean too much.

I know you, but x3 doesnt know you so I will thank you for being nice to her. We all have something to learn.

Hey...how come no one else has asked any questions and this is on page 2 already?

The purpose here is for me to share advice on how to target "fat loss" and build muscles in or around certain areas of your body. This goal will in turn accent and highlight parts of your unique body natrually.

Hi op....well ... everybody here seems to already have body sculpting experience.......
lots of great tips.......
but what about beginners?....... i worked and pushed alot of old cars when i was young...lol.. moved my own furniture when i had to move etc... which created arm muscle (very young, like teenage years)..... so it looks like im strong at 43..
with no body sculpting.. (just natural hard work)
and im told i have muscle cellular memory?....
b/c for 2 years i have done no heavy work.... at all. but my muscles are still visable.. look strong...

now im 43 i dont want to lose that muscle and get tuckshop arms.....(im told as we age muscles can deplete?)
now i used to work.. where my mate chainsawed palanio(tree) and i moved it.. branches etc.. when it came to lifting the logs..... ok he (has a 6 pack.. hes small wiry/muscly) but my arms are bigger than his ie i have more visable muscle...he would bend put on shoulder and carry weight...
i would bend lift log.... but i use my arms.. back.. he could lift more... he used his stomach? i could see his stomach muscles taking the weight....
now i have no stomach muscle.. so its going abit flabby....when i asked him how he lifted so much... he said he redistrubted the weight.....(id like to when i work know how to use my stomach to lift weights etc....
now your op.. says work on fat areas etc..(my stomach is only slightly fat area on my body)

how do i lift weight.. (saving my back.) and using my stomach ?....
i also have weak wrists.. (thats why my arms take the weight.. and build up) and weak hands from ross river virus...( i mean my hands can literally seize... so need strengthening...

so i guess the tips on tennis balls/typing (unforunately i type i finger)etc is where i should start? to get my wrists/hands strong enough? to get to next stage....... is there any other way to get my wrists stronger?.....
so how do i get my stomach muscles happening?.......without automatically using my back/arms to lift weight?
and how can i get my wrists stronger? ...i have no strength at all in my wrists.. nor hands..
thank you op....
smiles/peace

This just means you have not put on a lot of body fat. It does not mean that you are strong. Try and measure strength sometime- you may be surprised at just how far it has actually reduced if you have not been exercising for a long period.

and im told i have muscle cellular memory?....
Exercise physiology when I was taught it stated two relevant things. Muscle that has been built up before is easier to build up again- 'memory', and that the longer the time over which it was built, the longer it would take to fade.

i could see his stomach muscles taking the weight....

When performing nearly any muscular contraction, there are muscles that are placed so as to support the joints involved without contributing much or anything to the actual lift. When benchpressing, the deltoids, trapezius and rhomboids will all help support the shoulders and scapula. When doing pulldowns, the pectorals and trapeziods help support the sholder.

When using the whole body, eq squats, deadlifts, picking up heavy things, the bodies 'core' is activated- the rectus abdominus, or 'abs', and the erector spinea are the main front and back muscles of the torso. These are flexed to support the spinal column mostly.

As such, he is not 'lifting' with the abs- but they are part of the supporting structure of the torso. Weak abs will reduce stability and weight that can be lifted and increase the change of injury. Same goes for the extremely neglected erector spinea. Most people have done crunches or situps at some point in their life. A tiny percentage will ever do deadlifts, or even roman extensions. Lack of symmetry in itself can lead to injuries. All major lifts- including bench and pulldowns- use the core muscles to some extent.

Have faith- your abs are being used as well in the lift, just you cannot see it because your body fat is not low enough. 'Flab' on the stomach is just body fat, not abscence of the rectus abdominus.

This page has all the information you need for a stronger core- http://www.exrx.net/Lists/ExList/WaistWt.html . Do not neglect the erector spinae.
