| Death of a pet Posted: 6/11/2008 4:43:02 PM | I will post Rainbow Bridge for the passing of OP's kitty and to all of you out there that understand as well.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I lost my old lab mix Dec, 2001 and had her cremated. I spread her ashes on a high ridge on a windy day at one of our favourite nature areas we walked in. I saved a pill bottle of her ashes which I'll have scattered along with mine, as well of those of my current and subsequent pets. I know it's illegal - my friends and family will take the risk :o)
I also am a strong believer in getting a new friend to help fill the space left in your heart. Most of us care so deeply for our pets that a good part of our life revolves around them and their care. When you lose a pet, not only do you grieve deeply, but your entire life and routine seems to be out of kilter. It's one of the reasons I like to have at least 2 dogs. A little selfish perhaps, but it's a selfishness I don't mind indulging in in the least.
OP.. I feel for your loss. May you find comfort in the memories of your precious Hank.

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/11/2008 4:52:25 PM | Memories..... In the past year and a half, we lost our American Eskimo, Snowball aged 7. It was unexpected. Then two cats Alexis age 17 in June and Cleo age 18 in February. Both the cats died of natural causes, old age. They were total members of our family and are missed greatly. I think of them alot and miss the things they did with us as my children were growing up. Cleo and Alexis were the two who sat with me on Christmas eve, and watched me put the presents under the tree after the kids went to bed. We shared so many special moments like that over the years. They were my company, my sisters, as I raised my children as a single parent. Snowey was my son's best friend. When he passed, our house was full of my son and his friends (ages 18-24) who sat around and cried as we held a funeral for him in the back yard. Snowey was one of the "guys" and they all miss him. Pets, cats and dogs who come into our family, become our family. We arent the type to get a pet, keep it for a while and give it away. Family is family. My children are on their own now. My daughter has 2 dogs and 1 cat. My son has 2 dogs and I have the son of my daughter's cat and a kitten my daughter gave me for Mother's day. | |

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/11/2008 7:06:27 PM | Well. I just learned tonight that yesterday morning, about 12 hours or so after I posted that the black cat didn't wake up. Don't know the whole story, but...
He was laying unconscious, and having seizures. Dad took him to the vet one final time. The dog was concerned about what was happening, and the other cat wasn't sure what to think.
Well, we move on, and I have my big orange cat.

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/11/2008 7:19:05 PM | First of all I would like to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I know I have lost pets and each one has a special story. One thing I did with one of my pets is put a little picture album of him together. I had taken many pictures over his 14 years and it helped to look back, laugh, cyr and say Good bye. I can't help but almost cry when I write this but my vet sent me a little card that said our little pets will be wating just outside hevens door to go in with us. I believe they will. Grace & Peace | |

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/11/2008 7:58:44 PM | | Losing my 22 year old cat at age 12 was devistating. Its funny how when a pet dies it bothers you more than when a person dies. Maybe becuase you spend so much time witht hem and they give you unconditional love. i really feel for you. | |

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/11/2008 8:07:43 PM | I definately understand how painful that can be to lose a long time pet. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I know the only thing that really helps get beyond this tough period is time.
I would suggest some sort of memorial- a small rock or a statue with the animals name in the backyard in a part of the yard you enjoy that can be your place to find peace with your lost pet.
Again, Im sorry for your loss but hang in there, be happy for the times you shared! Tonight I will say some kind words before bed in your direction!

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/11/2008 8:23:39 PM | OP I'm so sorry for your loss...I've been through it a number of times;horses, dogs cats, birds. Sometimes I got the chance to say goodbye, and sometimes I didn't. You never get used to losing them. And as much as you SWEAR you will never let yourself get so deeply attached to a pet or companion animal again, you don't stick to that plan. You can't replace Hank. He was irreplaceable. But another one will come along and steal your heart, maybe later, maybe sooner. It's always so tough when a beloved animal companion who seemed hale and hearty one day is gone the next, for no obvious reason. You wonder if you missed something, or if there was anything that could have been done. Most of the time the answer to those questions is "no". It simply was time for your beloved animal friend to go. But it is only their body that stops working; their spirit lives on in your heart. May God grant that you find comfort in remembering what a great life Hank had,and how he enriched yours. Cindy O | |

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/12/2008 10:38:42 AM | I can sympathize with your loss, possibly one of the hardest things to go through, especially when you have had an animal for so long.
I lost the eldest of my 2 dogs 6 months ago.....An Australian Kelpie no less, I had owned her since 5 weeks old and she lived to 17 years of age. I still miss the old girl, it's hard not to, like you said, they always find a place in your heart. Mine did have one litter of pups during her lifetime (again Kelpies) and I kept one, She is now 10 years old and is identical to her mom so there is no way I am going to forget the old one in a hurry. I am fortunate enough to have some very nice pics of my 2 together so I keep them out where I can see them, that way I never forget.
Enjoy the memories of whilst they were around.

| Death of a pet Posted: 6/14/2008 3:49:58 PM | I'd like to thank everyone here for their condolences and their stories... obviously from some of them, "Broken Hearts" was certainly the right place for this.
We're very lucky to have had our pets in our lives, as sad as it is to lose them, we all have wonderful memories of them. My condolences as well to all who have lost their own - non-pet people will never understand, I think, the unique 'personalities' they have, and what they bring/have-brought into our lives.

| Death of a pet Posted: 7/11/2008 11:26:47 AM | Sigh.. two in about a month.. my oldest, Beau, after months of chemo was virtually cancer-free (no signs of it for at least 2 months), when he stopped eating and went downhill this past weekend... the vet thinks he got FIP (from a 50/50 chance with cancer, that he seemed to be beating - to a virtually 100% death sentence) with his compromised immune system.
The night-tech called me up wednesday night to tell me he was going downhill, and I drove to the vet - spent from 10:30PM through the morning with him, both of us cuddling him and trying to get him to eat, but he started really going down at 5:30AM, put him on O2 and called the Dr, who came in early at 6:30 and said his heart was failing. We put him to sleep around 7:30AM - the tech was sobbing (as was the morning tech that had just showed up), they all really loved him, such a sweet boy...

| Death of a pet Posted: 7/11/2008 11:39:04 AM | | To all pets everywhere, those who sat with us during the bad times, who romped during the good times, who never "demanded" more than a kind hand and loving word, who saw us naked and didn't laugh . . . rest in peace. If there were such a place as heaven, you are more deserving a spot there than most humans. | |

| Death of a pet Posted: 7/11/2008 9:53:12 PM | | I have a dog that I have had for 17 years now. She is starting to get to the point that I know it won't be much longer. It makes me sad to even think about it. I have no children and she is the closest thing to a child I have. | |
