But I must say that holding the door open is not something every lady appreciates nowadays. I don't do it anymore. Or let's say: I only do it when strictly necessary. Say she is carrying something on her hands, or I she my acquaintance, etc. I have had very bad experiences trying to be gentlemen just to be reminded that men and women are equal and my help is not needed as they are capable of opening the door themselves.
The same situation when offering my seat on public transport. Lots don't take it. And don't even say thanks anyway for offering. They look offended.
I know it is nice to be gentlemen but I just don't want to see those reactions.. | |

Posted: 6/21/2008 10:30:15 PM | That's a shame guys feel that way, I hold the door open for anybody and everybody, offer seats to anyone who looks like they need one etc, it's not about being a gentleman just common courtesy, and if someone takes offence then that's definitely "not hot"

- BO (can't stand it)
- Bad breath
- Having absolutely no idea about spelling and grammar
- Language is a big one like someone who constantly says "how's ewes doin??" etc (yeh I know I sound like a snob, I'm not, just something that is a turn off for me)
- Hair so dirty you can smell it (ewww)
- Arrogance
- Selfishness/Narcissism
- Tight arses lol (someone really mean with their money, and no I don't expect a man to pay for everything, I dislike this quality in both men and women)
- Men with long nails (yuk!!)
By the way, I think it's sad that men are afraid to be gentleman these days for fear that a woman will jump down their throat and give them a lecture on equality  | |

Posted: 6/23/2008 3:54:31 AM | On a date some time ago, the gentleman persisted in using lip-balm every few seconds. He ordered a main meal for himself and a salad for me, replaced my name with 'babe' and proceeded to tell me why my job wasn't a 'real job.'
Needless to say, that was the last time i let family members 'fix me up' with a date.
ut I must say that holding the door open is not something every lady appreciates nowadays.

It doesn't matter to me one bit, I'll open a door for men and women, boys and girls, young and old. It's just the way i was raised and if somebody jumps down my throat for it I'll probably jump down theirs, then stick around and make a point of opening it for the next person.
Do what feels right for you. The rest is irrelevant. | |

and the second a long planned meal/date with a so-called friend who also didnt ring.
Bloody hell..., new record for me.
The second was annoying because I made and had to cancel a booking at a special restaurant.
Oh well.....,

1 not making an effort when it comes to dressing for a date ( stubbies , thongs and a dressy shirt ) not a good look , kind of looks like they threw together whatever was on their bedroom floor just before walking out the door .
2 men in really tight black jeans and dirty old sneakers
3 Body odour a great big ewwwwwwwwwwwww
4 Arrogance
5 . And lastly and this is a biggy ( for me anyway) saying that you will call and you dont have a funny story about this last one that i really would love to share hope you fellow posters find it funny too ....
I went on a date quite some time ago ( about 2 years ago ) we arranged to meet at a pub one evening , we had a great time even if he did bring a mate lol . after a few hours I had to call it a night to relieve the babysitter , we said our nice and formal goodbyes peck on the cheek that kind of thing , last thing he said was that he would call me in the next few days ................ surprise surprise no phone call , Anyway about 4 months later I was in at a local shopping centre with my sister . We walked into a mobile phone store and wouldnt you know it the man in question was there aswell , He recognised me pretty much straight away , I walked up to him and said hello (insert name here) Are you buying a phone so you can call me back ?????? The guy didnt know what to say or where to look and i walked out with a huge smile on my face and a little surprised at myself for being so confrontational .

I'm so sad to hear you don't open doors for girls anymore!
I understand where you are coming from. Not long ago I saw an elderly gentleman hold a door open for a girl my age. At the top of her lungs she screamed at him " I don't need you to do that. I can hold the door open myself!" I couldn't help myself. I told he not to be so damn rude and thanked the man, and told him some of us still appreciate a gentleman. He would have been an easy 75y/o. It was disgusting!
I think most of us still have manners and love a gentleman! I always say thank you to a door opened or a gentleman letting me in the lift first.
Thanks for the heads up on English as a second language! I'll be more open minded next time! | |

Thanks for the lovely reply. I can picture in my mind the story you just shared. My experience was not as bad as for the poor elderly man. I know most women would not do something like that but it is clear that opinions are divided. For that reason there is not a norm that we need to open doors to be gentlemen. I still fell like one but I am quite careful not to offend anyone. When I am back where I am from, I don't need to worry about that. Nobody gets offended..:-))
As per my spelling.. I did not know whether you were talking about me or not.. but I am aware I make mistakes. My grammar sometimes mixes with the other language, which makes it look like I am writing or talking backwards. I have learned English mostly on the street... well I did a 9 months course here to kick off from scratch practically. | |

A nine month course is a huge undertaking! You've done well!
I start a French course in a few months. I'm sure when I get to France, the shoe will be on the other foot. I'm concerned when I get there, not being fluent, people will think I'm stupid!
