"Dogs have masters...cats have staff." --Rush Limbaugh
Too funny!!
I had a bf once who hated cats, he thought they were stupid, then our neighbour gave us an adorable kitten. He tolerated the kitten until one day 'Katie' our kitten, was looking at himself in a mirror, he thought he was looking at another cat and kept hissing at himself with hair all up on end, back arched trying to look real mean.
At one point Katie [yes he was a boy named Katie, long story] lunged ferociously at his counterpart in the mirror only of course to have his mirror twin lunge ferociously back at him. The result??? He scared himself shiteless, literally. He pooped on the floor and ran off.
We both laughed our heads off and after that my bf decided he loved cats!
Now to your query: My current cat was 13 when I started dating a guy who had allergies, so kitty on the bed at night when bf was over had to stop. I simply closed the door and kitty stayed out, she made a fuss the first few times but eventually gave up and learned the routine.
When bf wasn't over, kitty slept with me, I have trained her to sleep only where I want her to, which is on my side of the bed. If she is in the wrong spot I simply move her to where she needs to be. If she moves to wrong spot again she gets moved back, this happens a few times till she gets the boot off the bed. Eventually she learned that when on bed she sleeps on one side or she gets off. It takes some time and patience but you can train a cat to do many things believe it or not.
Be purrrsistant and she will eventually get the picture, a special blankey isn't a bad idea either, I have one in the living-room and she sleeps on it wherever I put it. Cats can learn to comply even when they're old, they would just rather not.
Cat-nip???? God no, have you ever seen a cat with cat-nip? It gets them high, if you want some entertainment on the bed, go for it. Otherwise you would be wise to save the cat-nip for another room.
Good luck. Arlene | |

| Cat Question Posted: 6/16/2008 11:01:31 AM | The cat will bond w/who she chooses to... But also your behaviors will encourage/discourage a bond.
My cat tigger spent years attached to me at night. No where near the ex. smooshed up against me facing my face. if I turned over, she switched sides too. She had NO interest in sleeping by the ex. That's because she was MY baby.
If she does try to smoosh up against your bf, he should clap his hands loudly and say no, something like that. discourage it and yes, she'll figure out who to sleep by.
She might also be one that sleeps on the foot of hte bed so it won't matter whose side it is.

Arlene that's the funniest story I've heard in a long time. Hahahahaha. Super cute. How could you hate a kitty like that after something so cute.

| Cat Question Posted: 6/16/2008 10:35:21 PM | So I got Lily home from the shelter today. She's totally cute and everybody loves her. Unfortunately she has to wear this silly cone because she was spayed this morning and my boyfriend calls her lamp head, lol. Fortunately, even after the surgery she's in a great mood, and she's eating and doing awesome. She's so affectionate. To get used to her surroundings she walked backwards for about 10 minutes and then made herself at home, haha. Anyways here's a picture of lamp head. Once again, thanks for everybody's help, advice, and stories!

| Cat Question Posted: 6/17/2008 7:39:26 AM | I don't agree that you can't train a cat. My cat Thomas is very well trained. He's also very smart for a cat so maybe that's why it was so easy to train him. It's surprising your kitty even wants to sleep on your bf's side of the best. Thomas always sleeps next to me regardless.
Here's a pic of my baby. I entered that picture in a cutest pet contest and he won!

| Cat Question Posted: 6/17/2008 7:44:42 AM | Thomas and Lily are both beautiful!!!! now I wish I had a pic to share. boo hoo. I might have a pic of Lucy, aka Loco Lucy, aka the devil's own cat. LOL She was a cute kitten but grew up to be one of those that hates everyone. She still lives w/the ex. He keeps threatening to get rid of her, but you know he never will.
Man you guys are making me want a kitten SO badly!!!! Surely I could sneak it into the apartment??? LOL Of course I also want to get a puppy next year. And in just 1.5 months, when I move into my house, I'll be getting my hugely overweight lazy dog Belle from the ex's house!!!!!! yes, I love pets. When married, I had 4 cats and 3 dogs (until the puppy got killed by a car last summer and until Daphne the cat disappeared about 2 months ago, sadly).

| Cat Question Posted: 6/17/2008 9:42:25 AM | If the cat being in bed is an issue for your BF...and things are going well...I'm not seeing why it's an issue for you. The cat has an entire house in which it can find areas to sleep. Just make the bed off-limits.
Unless,of course, the cat is more important than the BF... In which case,I'm certain that the BF will soon find another place to sleep. That doesn't have cats.

| Cat Question Posted: 6/17/2008 12:18:47 PM | Thanks Kaylie! I don't know about where u live, but a lot of places around here let u pay extra to have an animal, even if the lease originally states you can't have pets. Some landlords are lenient about that. I wish I could get another cat, but my evil cat-hating landlord won't let me. He lets me have Tom because I'm just about the only tenant who always pays rent on time and I basically told him I wouldn't stay there any longer without him. LOL | |

| Cat Question Posted: 6/17/2008 7:44:27 PM | Maybe get the cat to get used to sleeping in a large roasting pan.....with potatoes, and carrots and onions and gravy.....(don't mention "gravy" to the cat here unless you like getting whacked...he doesn't like that word for some reason....) | |

| Cat Question Posted: 6/17/2008 8:11:10 PM | | I don't allow pets in my bed anymore. My cat used to sneak into my room and lay on my pillow. I couldn't believe the fur she left there. Then there were the times she woke me up throwing up a hair ball. She's gone now and my son has a Jack Russell. My bedroom door is always closed. Don't blame the boyfriend onc bit for expecting a cat free sleep. | |
