| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/28/2008 8:28:20 AM | Clinton said it best, the REpublicans got a chance, finally, to dominate the political scene these past years so they could put their programs and policies in as full a force as anyone can ...........and we see the result.
I said it myself when Bush was elected in 2000, "oh, shit, Marty, now wer'e going to have a war and a recession".
You guys HURT America, you always have and you always will.
I hope America shows the REpublican party the door in November for a long, long, long time so we can get something real done, finally, and REALLY heal America.

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/28/2008 8:38:48 AM | There will always be "republicans" and "democrats"... although they may call themselves (and each other) different names... like "blues and greens", "opposition and loyalists", "empire supporters", "tories", "whigs", or whatever. The US was not the beginning of this struggle and it won't be the end. The struggle is GOOD. There's a dialog between citizens about the common interests of citizens, the human race, the world and individual interests and protection of individual rights as well. Sometimes we win and sometimes they win. Sometimes one side plays fairer than the other side and sometimes it's vicey reverso. This same thing went on in ancient Greece (indeed, that's what our system is vaguely based on), Rome, and almost any great society in the history of the world.
IN fact, it's not the two party system that's a threat to destroy us. It's when the two parties melt into a one party system. That's a big problem. I think we're uncomfortably close to that now. In fact, in the ruling class, it's way too much like that. That's why they don't support the interests of common people as they should. It's like: there's Washington and then there's everyone else...They're elitist in both parties...and issues like exploding health care costs and illegal immigration are never resolved while we're down here in this forum...tearing away at each other ...scratching each others eyes out with words...and the government's not helping. Neither party is addressing these very, very important issues.

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/28/2008 10:33:46 AM | Getting trounced by Obama may be the best thing that could happen to Republicans unless Karl Rove suddenly croaks. I'll force them to rethink what they're supposed to be all about. I CAN NOT ARGUE ONE BIT that there is a lot of truth in this point of view. The Republican Party really indeed NEEDS to rethink things and get back on track in many many ways! (and coming from me, a Republican, here???...wow, you just did something evn).
On the "trouble is though" side of this: But with the globe doing all that it is doing, we can't afford to have a less experienced Senator with virtually no foriegn affairs experience either take the helm right now. That would just certainly spell disaster with the risks.
On the other hand, on the "blessings are though" side of this: If McCain were to win the election and be out from under the relative power of the former poor leader of the party (our current president), then he'd have the position and room to work in his Maverick way to take on some of those issues!
We agree in principle here on much of the problem. I think this road though might probably bring safer and better solutions to more than one issue at the same time.
Afterthought Edit: As a matter of fact, by not electing McCain, the Republican Party is simply left under the guide of the Bushes for lack of a new leader to direct any change of course as is needed. (Ie: Similarly to how the Dems have had a lot of the Clintons to deal with since they retired from the White House and no other Dem has been in place since).

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/28/2008 11:37:51 PM | The republicans will always be republicans... just like Jesus said the poor will always be with us, so shall the rich. The rich will always feel they're being overtaxed and the poor will always feel discriminated against...and the kicker is that many times they're right!!! Somehow, through this dialog, a better way of life has emerged. I'm 58 and I know I was better off eight years ago, but I know DAM WELL I'm better off now than my family was fifty years ago! The US is now fairer, more egalitarian, prosperous, better educated, and democratic than it's ever been, so we're doing something right. I'm a progressive who usually votes democrat, but I think there's some issues the republicans are better on.. very few... but that's just the way I see things. | |

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/29/2008 12:07:35 AM | Democrats are ascendant because they have kept their principles consistent and embraced new policy approaches to express them and achieve the greatest good for the greatest number. They are the party of Traditional American Values, while Republicans fling themselves in disarray at one policy novelty after another:
"It doesn't look good at all," said Frank Luntz, a Republican strategist who helped the party seize control of the House of Representatives in 1994. "They can't recreate the Reagan coalition. Life has changed. America's priorities are different." McClatchy papers has an interesting piece on the fracturing of the GOP into its quite separate and adversarial constituencies. They go straight to the rightie think tanks for the sad skinny. Living Reagan and invoking dead Reagan kept this patchwork together for almost 30 years, but it is collapsing. The neocons and the theocrats and the civil libertarians and the isolationists and the corporadoes have nothing in common any more, not even the patchwork candidate so many of them are not traveling to convene with. (While Obama filled his stadium with nearly 70,000 people, the McCain folks can't give away their measly 10,000 tickets for his event.)
It's a Humpty Dumpty party, all right, and all the oil money and all the oil men won't put the party together again.
Here's that prebituary: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/251/story/51017.html
Cheers!
Vulf
And 4? That experience crap is so baseless and ill informed. As Vice President Gore reminded us tonight, our greatest President by all accounts, Abraham Lincoln, served a mere four terms in the Illinois State House, and then a single term in the US House of Representatives, at which time he opposed a popular war and challenged the reasons given for it. That was the extent of Lincoln's government service before he was elected President. He is best remembered as an inspiring speaker and a builder of coalition, compromise, and progress. He filled his Cabinet with the best men for the jobs, regardless of party, including some who at first held him in contempt.
Oh, and he rescued the nation from bitterest division. Partly by winning a war.
Sound familiar?
Strange, Senator Obama addressed all your issues tonight. AGAIN!

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/29/2008 12:20:33 AM | Americans want change, and the Republican party and McCain aren't offering much there. It's the same ol' same ol', offered up when no one wants to buy that anymore.
They are building a bridge to the twentieth-century.
McCain's totally the wrong candidate to run when a guy like Obama's running, you could not possibly get more contrast in two men running for that office.
Placed in context against the economic climate of the country, people will want a chance at a better life - and McCain's got nothing to say that makes much sense there when average Americans say "Please Sir, can I have some more ? "
He's the ghost of Republican past, that recent era of the Republican party where it turned away from what had made it so great in the past.
A loss in November would shock the Republican party to it's roots, and that's sometimes needed when change has to be made. It tends to be a great motivator....

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/29/2008 1:04:19 PM | Just saw the mention of McCain's V.P. running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska. That is a very good choice for McCain. Sarah has some executive experience as a Governor and Mayor and she has legitimate conservative positions----pro-life, member of the NRA, anti-tax, anti pork-barrel spending, etc. Romney would have been a good choice too, because of his long-term experience and economic acumen; but Sarah is even better in terms of uniting the Republicans. She is also a former beauty queen who married her high school sweetheart and has five kids. She is a born-again Christian, which will be popular with evangelicals and fundamentalist Christians.
The main thing is that Sarah's conservative credentials are impeccable. McCain wouldn't have gotten that by selecting Romney, Lieberman, Giuliani, or most of the other possible choices. Sarah is the best choice McCain could have made.

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 8/29/2008 1:57:26 PM | shieldvulf smacks several nails squarely on the head: the republican party is a deeply fractured commodity: the religious right came a stone's throw away from making Huckabee the nominee, which freaked Vulf's corporadoes, so they squashed him. Mittens, the big-business candidate, was similarly squished by the religious right for being a member of what they consider is a cult. Guiliani, the neocon war candidate, was piled on by both the fundies and the corporatists for being batshit crazy; Thompson, the Great White Hope, was little more than a snoring mummy.
That leaves the underfunded and unpopular McCain, who wasn't chosen to be the nominee insomuch as he was the only survivor of a circular firing squad....

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 9/1/2008 9:24:28 AM | | actually i'm glad he chose Palin....I think the toughest choice for the Democrats would have been Gov. Bobby Jindel....He clearly was the best guy then Romney. McCain went for the WoW! factor "that will soon die down" in response to Obama's big speech....This Hail Mary is about to be intercepted and returned. | |

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 9/1/2008 1:21:12 PM | McCain's choice of veep is extremely irresponsible. Having a "hockey mom" with even LESS experience than Obama is reckless and puts our country at risk should McCain pass away. Obama was wise to choose Biden--Obama has the strong domestic experience, while Biden has strong international experience. Both men complement each other, and if God forbid Obama had a heart attack, Joe Biden would be ready to step in and take over. I could see Palin freaking out and panicking if she is elevated to the Presidency
Hopefully the Republican Party will die a slow death and be split up into a bunch of insignificant minority parties, and the Democrats will be the major party for a long time. The next largest party should be the Green Party, which also has good people. A few years ago I voted for a Green Party candidate for the Legislature. We need strong progressive leadership that will push back the social conservative rubbish that is harming our country.
Romney is a nutjob--I know--I live in Mass. and had to suffer under its poor "leadership". It wasted our Legislature's time over gay marriage instead of the state's business. Thank GOD we now have Gov. Patrick who is focused on the state's business instead of silliness.

| Will the Republican Party Heal Itself In Time? Posted: 9/2/2008 8:40:59 AM | Gov. Sarah Palin has had a rough couple of days since her announcement as McCain's running mate. The news broke about her possible role in having her brother-in-law fired; her daughter's unwed pregnancy; and her husband's DUI years back. If those three things are all that come out, then Sarah should be able to ride out the storm. The Christian conservatives are mostly happy with the selection; but secular and moderate Republicans seem mixed in their response. Sarah is OK for now; but if more negative stuff dribbles out about her over the next few weeks, or if she stumbles on the campaign trail, this could end up being McCain's worst nightmare.
It's good for all the bad news to come out at one time if it has to come out.

heheh, does that include "Alaska Secessionist Party" that she was a member of?
I mean hell, thats about a step away from treason, isn't it?
