I record Man vs. Wild. I know that if my knife freezes on my hand, pee on it to remove it. Camels store alot of water in their stomachs, so slice and dice and drink away. And you can crawl inside the carcass for protection during a sand storm. And all bug it seems are full of protein.

Oh, and pee in your thermos and tuck it in your shirt to keep warm.

Of course, since Animal Attacks vs Humans are up...could it be that the animals now look upon us as competing predators??

Nobody had been killed by a Stingray in 300 years before Steve Irwin died to one...now two others have died from heart-strikes as well since Irwin. Many animals that people generally considered safe are now killing people in record numbers...12 dead in Africa due to Chimpanzees who used rocks to brain locals...6 dead by Dolphin attacks in Brazil...

I think the animals are getting peeved with us...Mother Nature is looking for some Payback!!

well, I guess now we know how to survive in the camel-infested arctic tundra. Seriously, this post is more in response to the OP than anyone else. What a silly, silly thread. The only reason to post about primitive/post-apocalyptic survival on a DATING WEBSITE is to demonstrate how large your penis is. BTW, Survivorman could kick Bear Gryll's ass any day. He's all gimmicks. He uses a flint. In what survival scenario would you just happen to have a flint?

-------snip-------
'The Rambo types are the first to go'

Gonzales says many of the disaster survivors he studied weren't the most skilled, the strongest or the most experienced in their group.

Those who seemed best suited for survival -- the strongest or most skilled -- were often the first to die off in life-or-death struggles, he says. Experience and physical strength can lead to carelessness. The Rambo types, a Navy SEAL tells Gonzales, are often the first to go.

Small children and inexperienced climbers, for example, often survive emergencies in the wilderness far better than their stronger or adult counterparts, he says.
-------snip-------

If this author is right, with the majority of the rambos and seal types dead, the population should be pretty meek. Any surviving "strong man" might find he doesn't have much compitition to become the chief tyrant. But like someone mentioned, we're a little smarter than we were, so the villiage would probably hunt them down, like a lion someone saw at the local dump.

errr..Shrek...stigrays have been killing people every year....just that you rarely hear about it. Since a "celebrity" bought the farm from that form of death, it is now reported more often.
How many shark attacks in the St Lawrence River every year? No idea huh? Several...but they go unreported by national news and remain a local issue...don't want to be scaring the tourists off huh? Even in the Saguenay River there are sharks that attack people.
Anyhow's...you have to be careful out there. Example, if things went all nuts and, say, Texas would be a good place to go and survive (for some reason or another), I'd have to learn the local flora and fauna just to avoid getting hurt. I might remember to knock my boots out EVERY TIME before putting them on...but a lifetime of habitually not doing that could lead to trouble...from the black widow spiders that love to crawl into dark places in that locale. See what I mean?
The same rules apply no matter where you go...you have to know what is out there beforehand or you could get into trouble.

The whole premise of reverting back to a "Stone Age" is not realistic. As long as I can turn my generator, I can broadcast a wireless signal. As long as I can do that, I can broadcast the contents of my hard drive. The Internet is here to stay as long as there are three motivated geeks on this planet.

Melt the ice at the poles. No big deal for most people. Denver will still be building airplanes and Fort MacMurray will still be shipping fuel.

Hell, spread your worst virus possible, drop as many nukes as you want and see what happens. I guarantee the Inuit will still be ripping around on snowmobiles to their fishing holes, talking over cell phones and renting DVD's from a store somewhere.

If the Sh1t ever DOES hit the fan, expect that your next door neighbour would gladly cut your throat to fill his stomach, once he realizes his entire paper wealth has been dissolved. All this would take is a total worldwide loss of confidence in paper money.

As a competent welder, framer, mechanic, hunter and hiker, I don't think I'll have much to worry about besides the fat lawyer who lives next door with his Hummer and maid who has come to realize that his survivalist tool box is lacking in most areas besides treachery.

I'd think that the title concept of everything going to *crap* would include a total collapse of the infastructure. Cell phones and the internet wouldn't likely be around. Without money or money that is basically worthless, buying gasoline would be a trifle difficult. Or buying anything for that matter. What supplies there would be would likely be hoarded.
Those three geeks can sit in the basement and chat all day long on their cobbled together wireless internet while everyone else is out hunting and gathering the basic necessities.

Got to get away from the Costner movie thinking when it comes to society falling apart.

^^^How could the cell phone networks be completely destroyed? You would have to knock all the satellites out of the sky and destroy all the cell towers. Even then, you can still use ham radios and walky-talkies that go 10km.

If you want to make your own gasoline, find some crude oil (tarsands) and heat it up. Drain whatever fluid rises to the top. It should work just fine.

"Water World" can't happen. There's not enough glaciers to melt.

Whether systems are intact or not they still have to be active. A phone can be perfectly operational but if the service is not active, it is a just a paperweight.
Think of the rioting and looting that sometimes occurs in cities whose professional sports team wins the title. That is rioting and looting at a joyeous time. Imagine what people would do it things were somewhat less than joyeous.
Hard to be concerned much about calling your Aunt in Topeka when you have a lot of icecream melting in your freezer because the power is out.

Funny though how people mention communications more in this thread than how one would find food or protect themselves and their families.
Who cares if the net is down or you can't call in sick because the country is going down the sh!tter?

The old phone systems relied on power being generated by a crank...which would ring the local operator. The local operator would then use generated electric power to raise the other city being called. The process used to sometimes take hours, depending on how far the call was being made.

Newer digital systems would fail without power. Cell towers only work if there IS power to that tower.

It's not a bad idea to have at least ONE CB radio handy...even one of the cheap portable systems you find for $40 in Walmart would at least help one to have SOME communication with local people & truckers. If you've never listened to truckers on CB radio...you've missed out. You get instant traffic reports, smokey/bear (cop) reports, weather...etc...if there is any kind of localized/statewide/nationwide problem, it'll be all over the CB...also news on National Guard heading your way to help out...etc....

Used to be that smart old cops would keep a CB in their squad cars so that if a trucker spotted a drunk/sleepy/dangerous driver they'd hear about it before a call ever went out...doesn't happen so much any more.

I can:

- make loads of things, including a comfortable shelter/dwelling
- diagnose and treat common problems and perform minor surgical procedures
- identify many edible plants
- cultivate vegetables
- catch fish and small game, and gut them
- cook
- play drums/percussion
- tell good stories

I'd be useful, I reckon.

I would be a farmer. I grew up in Junction City Kansas and while I did not live on a farm I lived near one and worked occasionally on it. I know about many crops and how, where, and when to plant them.

I am also very good with a whip and I know how to shoot a gun and I can use a bow and arrow. I would hunt animals for food although I will admit no experience at hunting. I would fish also.

I can not cook worth a darn but my twin sister can so I would bring home the bacon and she would fry it up in the pan.

Survival would entail not just growing food, but being able to protect it from the rest of the starving hordes. There is always greater strength in numbers so an important skill would be political dexterity and the ability to form alliances for protection. How sad that even after starting over we will still have a need for politicians.

^^^ noooooooo

In case of Zombies, have at least a .40S&W high capacity pistol with 5-10 magazines & a pump or semi-auto 12ga. shotgun with a bag fulla shells...anything less and you would be lunch.

In a pinch ANY Calico 9mm product would do (50 or 100 round magazines) or a Tec-9 (or varients) with the 50 round magazines...but they are illegal in California...dang liberal weirdos. At least you can shoot a lot without having to stop to reload...very important against large groups of Zombies.

It is also preferred to drive a "hardened" SUV...meaning with bulletproof glass...makes it harder for them to break a window & enter. If all else fails go all "A-Team" & weld on some steel window covers with slots for viewing. Find an old armored car as a SHTF vehicle...they're MADE to run over things and be difficult as heck to assault.

There are FEW homes that are anywhere near ready for a zombie invasion...most have windows. Short of building a home that looks like an MX missile bunker...a smart zombie can tear through almost any door, window, burglar bars...it just takes time & strength...and that's something they have plenty of.

Steel doors, no windows, and gun ports are key.

I would survive exactly like the homeless people who live on the streets survive every day, by dodging the bullet, digging in garbage, and finding a safe hole to crawl into. The ability to survive is a skill within itself and that is all you need. An intelligent organism adapts to it's surroundings.

I am a stone mason, and I know how to build without modern technology, right from creating cement from a kiln - burned stone (including the building of a kiln.) I am also a hobby gardener, hobby farmer, and press my own fruit alcohols in the old methods!

I think I'd be much sought after. I'm also not half bad a shot with a bow and arrow.... though thus far I have mostly used that skill on foxes and raccoons that have tried to eat my chickens. I have no trouble gutting my own meats, though I prefer someone else to do so.

Part of my heritage trades schooling was milling and seasoning wood in the old method, so that I could better match with my historical restorations. That is easy enough knowledge to use for a new construction. So I can do most building right from the harvesting/quarrying and manipulations of the raw material. Where I lack is in metallurgy.

So other than a metal smith, what would I need to bargain my skills for? My entire property is set up for self sufficiency, and without too much modern technology. I have a windmill water pump, and I know enough to do the maintenance on that.

Limestone_Lady, your skillset is impressive, and you could do well with an individual homestead, except that there will be people like chthonic warrior out there with roving bands of marauders.

Where I lack is in metallurgy.

What a coincidence, that's one of my areas of specialty!

So other than a metal smith, what would I need to bargain my skills for?

Protection in numbers and fortified positions. I extend to you an invitation, you'd have a position of authority in my settlement, you wouldn't even need to "smurfette" your way in (unless of course you wanted to, I could see how some women might find the idea appealing).

Pauly Shore would become President and everything would return to normal again!!!!!

NOOOOOOooooooo!!!! That would be the cause of the time of troubles, not the cure!
