One of my daughters has had lap band surgery, she has lost 40kgs looks great,
but it has ****ed with her head, its called addiction transfer, not being able to dull awful feelings with food she started taking anti depressents by the hand full, doctor shopping the whole bit,so losing the weight hasn't made her happy, just changed her problem, she is 4 weeks off the pills, but is just like a junkie or an alcholic wanting the food the pills to dull her pain,as a mother of a troubled person try not to make your judgements on people so ill informed! Everyone is not just a lazy guts!!

So... back on topic, did anyone see 60 Minutes last night? Don't flame me for misquoting but it was like 3/4 of diabetics who had lapband surgery were almost instantly cured of their diabetes, as opposed to 10% of those following diet/exercise regime and drugs, pretty awesome results, and an Australian study to boot. The subject of the story (some aussie actor whose name escapes me) went home 48 hours after surgery completely free of his diabetes, which had previously been chronic

That’s interesting; lap banding surgery has been around for quite some time. Seems odd that they only just discovered a side effect of the procedure cures Type 2 Diabetes.

In the USA (which has a population of 20 million + Type 2 Diabetics), they’ve been performing a gastric bypass procedure called duodenal-jejunal bypass (DJB) surgery and it cures diabetes.. It seems to be an altogether different from lap banding the stomach, as normal gastric volume and exposure to nutrients is preserved. That in my mind seems to be the better way to go as lap banding has problems with constricting the stomach, food volume intake and vomiting etc.

The US has been performing bariatric surgery on obese patients since the 1950’s.

Hypothesis: The duodenum plays a major role in glucose homeostasis through mechanisms largely unknown at this time. Evidence of this hypothesis comes from accumulated data in bariatric surgery patients who underwent Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass or Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) with or without a Duodenal Switch. Current evidence strongly supports this hypothesis with a long term (over 10 years) Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus(T2DM) resolution rate of 84-86% following the gastric bypass and over 95% for the duodenal switch.
The clinical resolution of T2DM is defined as independence of all anti-diabetic medications and maintaining a HbA1c less than 6.0. Recent rodent experiments by Francesco Rubino and subsequent human case reports by Cohen et al. supports the validity of this hypothesis. The modified procedure involved a roux-en-y bypass of the duodenum and 30-50cm of proximal jejunum, unaltering the stomach and pylorus resulted in resolution of T2DM with no weight loss in all subjects.

    And

"Would you use the term 'cure diabetes?'" Stahl asks Dr. Hutcher.
"I think my patients are cured," he says.
    "Cured?" Stahl asks.
"Well, they go home on no medication," he says. "And I've followed them now for 10 and 15 years, and see no evidence of recurrence. So, it's pretty darn close."
