If you work in a restaurant, having your arms exposed with tattoos in a fast food joint would not be so bad, cause at least it is not going to fall off and get into someone's food like hair would. I believe that piercings are like open wounds, if you get germs in them it will make you sick and any kind of contact would make customers sick. In a fancy diner or something you should dress appropriate, I find it rather distasteful that certain businesses allow people to wear lip and nose rings who are servers, people should look more respectable at work.

I don't condone piercings or tats.. I have a few of each of my own... I'm just saying....
Diggy I think you are confused. What you said was you don't approve of them, but you have some of your own.
I have a tattoo. I have piercings. I don't have any visible facial piercings and that seems to be the thing that most here are concerned with. My tattoo is visible unless I wear pants. I wore a skirt to my last job interview, and was offered the job the next day. FTR, I work in an office setting and I interact with everyone that comes in to our offices.
GuelphDude, piercings are not open wounds unless they are fresh. Yes, they can get infected. That isn't the cause of the common cold or the flu. Anyone considering a tattoo or piercing will be well aware of the risks of not researching and interviewing a piercer or tattooist and checking out the shop in which they plan on having their work done in. I look for sterilization equipment, health inspection certificates, length of time in the business and reputation. A clean shop isn't likely to transmit disease to their customer... things like HepC that are transmissible.
I went to a really funky diner a couple of months ago. I think pretty much everyone in the place had tattoos or piercings or both. It's never bothered me. Can't remember who said it, but it's more likely that you will be served your food with hair in it then you will with a piece of body piercing jewellery in it. I'm more icked out by a server with acne then I am with body piercings or tattoos.
I guess I'm just blind to those things because I seriously don't see how someone chooses to adorn their body as being a deciding factor on how they perform their job. If they are professional, polite, respectful, know their business and perform it without any problems, show up on time, do what they are asked to do, and anything else a good employee is supposed to, really.. what difference does it make?

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 7/7/2008 9:47:56 AM | This post couldn't come at a better time. I think it boils down to exactly what the person does for a living. If they are stuck in a back room and away from public view, I suppose it's not a problem. However, if one is working directly with the public, looking 'presentable' and 'normal' is always the best bet. Too many piercings look ugly, are a distraction to the customer and unfortunately they don't give off the look of professionalism.
Okay, now here's MY beef! Why do some people go into the hairdressing profession when it's sooooooo obvious they can't cut, shape or style hair, worth a darn!!????
I've just come back from getting my hair supposedly styled (cut/shaped) and I honestly feel I'd have had better luck going to the local dog groomer!! Thank god I know how to fix this mess, but geez, don't they teach students who go into this profession how to work with hair and leave the customer WANTING to come back to their establishment again????
I guess I really should have looked at the stylist's hair first. That would have been an EXCELLENT clue as to how she does, or cares, about anyone else's
Thanks for letting me rant. Now time to go rewash this mess and do a redo
Thank god my hair grows FAST!!!!!

If a "professional" had pink hair and piercings in their eyebrows and odd places on their nose or lips... or even exposed tattoos on their arms or hands.. I would think twice about them.
I was told by my tattoo artist that if I work with people and I enjoy my job to not get any tattoos or piercings where anyone can discriminate against me.
Just 5 years ago I was contemplating getting a vertical lip piercing. Nope never happened. Just my own preference.
Anyways, I don't need to justify why I am against someone such as a doctor, surgeon, or lawyer having visible tatttoos, outrageous piercings, or wild hair.
Oh and for the record, I think it is disgusting when you can see the persons tongue piercing when they talk. Yes I've had my tongue pierced. Took it out as it was damaging my teeth and gums. OOPS I just made a justification.

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 7/8/2008 11:15:52 AM | Wow... As a person who has 13 piercings and substantial amounts of tattooing done.. I've yet to meet an employer who based my job performance on my outward appearance.
I have worked in a casino, i've worked in collections, I currently work in a customer service field and I intend on working with wayward youth when i'm finished my degree.
At my customer service job I get about at least 20 compliments a day .. at least. On my hair, tattoos and/or facial piercings. I make no attempt to hide them and my employer doesn't mind.
To think that close minded individuals are so hung up on what a person looks like when everyone has always been taught by an early age not to judge people, it's funny to see how many hypocrites there are running around the world. Maybe people should start judging these people and labeling them as "boring, stale, stagnant, afraid of new things, closet cases, nomads" etc?
Better yet should our children who aren't afraid to experiment with their bodies make fun of those who don't? It's close-minded individuals that set up these downfalls for other people because of their refusal to just accept people and realize that life is short and the more constraints you place on individuals is what makes humans move to the next available extreme.
One simple thing. It's ok to have your own opinion, but don't place your own biased opinions on what you expect people to look like without having some form of ramification kick you in the buttox.

But recently i was looking at job opportunities at Disney world and i was shocked...the dress code and appearance code is unbelievable. Only allowed natural hair colour, even obvious highlights is not allowed, only one set of ear piercing...guys are not allowed earings. no other facial piercings allowed. unhidden tats are not allowed, no shorts, ect. I was quite amazed....lol

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 7/27/2008 4:13:03 AM | Im covered in tattoos and have had many piercings and luckily my boss doesnt mind. When i applied for the job (i started off as cleaner and have worked my way up to being an administration assistant!) i had most of my ears done and not long after starting the job i ot my first tattoo which was a skull & cross bones on my back. Now nearly 2yrs (i think) down the line i have had my eyebrow pierced, nose pierced, tattoos on both my wrists and my boss does mnd as long as i can covered them up. I dont think she would mind a mad hair colour eithr because i am being me. I do meet customers quite often (i work in the main office) and they are always asking about my tattoos. One person who drops off parts for the workshop shows me tattoos hr friends have and we always have a discussion about them. If someone doesnt like them then they havent said to me so all is good! I think it all comes down defiantly to the company. I applied for 9 different jobs at Boundary Mills when i was job hunting before i applied for the jo i am in now and i got turned down for all 9 jobs, why?? Because i had my nose pierced!! I think it is discrimination. Just because i had a facial piercing, doesnt mean i wasnt capable of doing te job and 1 person who interviewed me was covered in tattoos, but obviously not many of her collegues knew. Not fair in my books but oh well! | |

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 7/27/2008 11:25:15 AM | Hair colour and cut doesnt bother me and neither does tattoos but unfortunatly piercings do. It all depeneds on where I am though. I am sure this may offend the pierced majority but I cant stand big gauge holes or wild big facial piercings when I am eating. I dont mind seeing any of that on the street or in a retail enviroment but not at dinner, sorry. And that doesnt mean I hate all peircings, the problem is that most of the people I see with lip rings, play with them with thier toungs and the same goes with toung rings and the people that play with and chew on them*yucky* I do the hiring at my business and unfortunatly I can admit that facial piercings can make or break an interview, thast not to say if you had a great resume I wouldnt hire you, just I may have to think hard on it. But thats also because I have to think about how my customers would feel speaking to you, and I am in a very small town. | |

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 8/8/2008 5:48:48 PM | Am I offended? No. I'm attracted to women with piercings, tattoos and wild hair. And it doesn't bother me at all if I work with or am served by someone like that.
But do a lot of employers discriminate? Ya. It still happens a lot, and a lot of people, mostly older, are very judgmental about outward appearances.
I think over time, it will lessen, as the old farts die off, since tattoos and piercings are more and more common place these days.

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 8/9/2008 1:02:08 PM | Funny, we went through the same thing in 1967 when we started growing beards and long hair. There are still songs from those days about it, telling us how we should be free from society's judgements about appearances. Now, it is the younger generation who has cut their hair and doesn't like my long hair or beard. It's all a fashion statement!
Typically the younger generation wants a different fashion than their parents and parents want their young to look like their clones. What people don't get is that fashion changes. Then you may want to adjust. I cut my hair short a bit from shoulder length and curly to straight and more manageable. Personally, I don't like the military cut. I have trimmed my beard from full and longer to a small goatie.
Now, what would I do with a tattoo? Especially I it says "I love Lucy" while my presnet girl is called "Jane". Or if it carries some other political meesage I don't subscribe to anymore. That's what I think is stupid about tattoos. That's not talking about the risk of some serious diseases, if it is not done professionally. In a way piercings can fall in the same category. Some people like snot noses, others don't. As long as they don't leave a mark, you can always take them out :) Hey, are you still wear your pants way down? That's (fortunately) out of fashion too :)
Don't forget that every fashion change makes money for the vendors! What would the bra vendors do without the present show tit fashion? There is no way in the world anyone would want to wear these hard harnesses. But this year, hey why not?

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 8/9/2008 3:36:20 PM | I'm not offended, I'm not a big fan of conformity. Unfortunately when it comes to companies, I can understand why they have a certain policy in regards to looks when hiring. Some companies survive on first impressions such as legal or government type industries as well as food industries. It really depends on where you want to work. Warehouse or factory jobs don't allow certain jewelery due to safety concerns. But for the most part they don't care if you have coloured hair or tattoos. | |

| Are you offended?By piercings, tattoos or wild coloured hair or haircuts when someone is working? Posted: 8/13/2008 6:27:52 AM | | You know when it comes to work there is a sterotype! Like if you are in the public eye all the time, like a salesman, or a lawyer where you have to wear a suit yeah I think you have to hide them a bit. I have a friend who is a lawyer and he has a full body suit underneath thats cool. But for me I will soon be a cop any day now, Im in the process in getting a sleeve done on my left arm just searching for the right tattooist. Piercings are hot, except the eyebrow leaves a nasty scar over time. | |
