jmarquise,

"so I took a $13.25 per hour job and turned it into a quarter of a million dollars in 3 years. I learned how to make sacrifices. I am not an exception, I am an example."

Do you care to give us the story on how did you achieve that? I am really curious, and I am sure some of our fellow posters here would like to know that the American drean is still alive.

Seems like a good idea to me. Great point jmarquise. Obama is all about looking out for those that need funds. Bob Barr could clearly use a couple more millions of dollars to advertise along side of Obama and McCain.

i don't think marquise or pickme understand the basic concept of taxes.

there is a universally accepted concept that the more you make the more you pay. this is a progressive tax. this concept is generally agreed upon by all parties except the super rich and leona helmsley who famously declared, "only poor people pay taxes".

payroll tax, which you've conveniently left out, is a regressive tax, because it applies on the first $90k of someones's salary. So if you make $90K a year you you pay the same payroll tax as a salaried CEO who makes $90 million a year.

You're complaining about the top tax rate at 35%, but ignore the historical perspective which lends to why Obama's position is the way it is.

in 1960 the top tax rate was 91%
in 1970 it was 71%
in 1980 it was 70%
in 1982 under Reagan it fell to 50%
in 1990 under Bush it fell to 28%
Clinton raised it in 93 to 39%
Bush knocked it back down to 35%

So the 35% you're complaining about was double that in the last generation. In the 60's it was almost 3 times that amount.

But how did Reagan and Bush pay for these cuts in the top rate?
1. by increasing the Payroll tax (Social Security) which is a regressive tax that impacts the poor more than the rich.

2. by reducing the benefits the elderly receive under Social Security and raising the retirement age so that the elderly get less years in retirement to enjoy the benefits they paid into.

3. they didn't pay for these cuts. both presidents created the most massive debts in history which still have to be paid off. how? you're taxes are paying the interest on those debts now but it will require more to pay off the debt.

If you remember correctly, Bush's tax cut was originally adopted and endorsed by Greenspan as needed because of the budget surplus (that Clinton left him with).

Bush's tax plan sought to make up for the income tax cut by increasing the payroll tax, cutting social security benefits. He also reduces for 10 years the minimum income level for the alternative minimum tax, which was originally a mechanism to prevent the rich from cheating on their taxes, but now will essentially hit the middle class with a "stealth" tax increase.

Rather than eliminate the tax cut for the rich, they choose to sock it to the poor and middle class. This is called a shift in wealth from the poor and middle class to the mega wealthy. The opposite of robin hood.

Obama is seeking to end this practice of shifting wealth to the rich by increasing the ceiling on the payroll tax and eliminating the tax cuts that have been financed by the poor and middle class and giving them a break so they can have more money to spend and create demand.

Why should any Democrat help Bob Barr? He paints himself as a rational Libertarian, but i remember when he was a rabid Republican Hypocrite who was in charge of Clinton's Impeachment proceedings for lying about having an affair.

Even though Barr's ex-wife claimed in divorce proceedings that Barr had been having an affair and also that the pro-life Republican had driven his wife to have an abortion.

Barr is Republican ilk, maybe he can hook up with Joe Lieberman.

It's not that I I don't comprehend, it's just that I don't care.

You're personal experiences are meaningless in the context of the greater discussion, not to mention uncomfirmable.

So here how about you show me some research.

I don't care what you think either. you are an outsider looking in. I live this, you don't.

I'm not sure where you guys get the idea that the government provides so many handouts to people.

come to my neighborhood.

Bob Barr would be a great spoiler to make Obama our next president. Have at it Bob!!

Obama SHOULD repeal tax breaks to the rich--they don't need the money!!!!!! The middle class NEED breaks, not the rich

I owe you an email!

send me a PM, I am happy to tell you all about it.

no sir. I advocate the fair tax. my beef is with government waste. the fair tax isn't a flat tax. it's a tax on spending rather than income. I grew up in the DC area. the government waste there would sicken you.

Why do these egotistical maniacs run when they know they can't win? What a waste of a good vote. Bob Barr, Ralph Nader and guys like him are egomaniacs.

it's that attitude that is ruining this country. barack obama and john mccain are the egomaniacs. they are total losers. if their is no belief in a win, what is the sense of running? should we suffer at the hands of these two brutal hands the rest of our lives? my america is different. my america offers choice and freedom. yours offers dictated opinion.
