| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 2:35:35 AM | I think I was noticing it a lot in the younger men. What inspired me to ask the question is that I noticed many of the gentlemen in their twenties still referring to the ladies as "girls" and it occurred to me that there's a possibility that part of their problems with their interactions with the ladies is that they still see the ladies as "girls".
They're young, and most of them don't really present themselves as "women," just as a lot of young men my age don't present themselves as "men." Someone else also pointed out that the term can sound a bit too formal for your average conversation. Personally, I prefer "guy," to "man." Someone can go as far as calling me a "kid" at 22 without offending me too much as long as they have a good 10-20 years on me...

| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 3:30:47 AM | Fun huh? Too bad you didn't keep in mind that I swim through these waters. Let's have fun.
I hate the term 'lady.' To me, I only use it when I'm pi$$ed. Example:
Hey lady! Get the f^ck out of my way! Hey lady! Screw you! Hey lady! F^ck off.! Hey lady! You think I give a sh!t what you think! Hey lady! Shove this up your ass! Hey lady! Suck on this! Hey old lady! Hurry up and die! Lady! Git up offa my d!ck! (more urban)
Now 'woman' is more my speed:
Goddamn! You see that hot f^ckin woman! (said to a buddy) Woman! I don't know whether to smack you or f^ck you. Oh f^ck woooommmaan! That's feels so good! You're the only woman in my life. I love you, woman. Woman, we need to f^ck. Woman, I need to f^ck you. Get over here woman! Gimme some of that love! Woman, I ain't saying it again! What did I just tell you woman?! Woman! Would you just shut up and listen a second? Damn woman! Your pu$$y is wet!
Now 'chick':
There's this chick over there who's naked! That chick is nuts. Check out that chick's a$$. That's his chick. Chick's got some big hooters. Love that chick's small t!ts. Man, that chick can f^ck! That chick can go to hell!
Girl:
Just some girl I met. That's his girl. She's acting like a little girl. That girl is crazy! She's a daddy's girl. She's a spoiled little rich girl that I dumped. That girl can't drive for sh!t.
Baby:
Baby, I'm sorry. Baby, if you only knew what you meant to me. What do want me to do baby? Hey baby, you called? Baby, I'm gonna be home late tonight. You know it, baby! I love you baby. Damn baby, you're lookin' good! Baby, stop. I don't wanna argue. Baby, how many times do I have to tell you? Baby, let's sleep in. Baby, your skin is so soft. Baby, you're all that I need. Baybah, baybah, baybah!
Gal, broad and toots. You can erase those from the English language. And only a woman calls her man "sweetie." A man uses "sweetheart."
Now was that fun or what?

| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 4:30:04 AM | | As others have posted, it's usually "girls and guys". So the term "girl" means more than simply "human female under eighteen." Heck, I've heard people refer to their pets as "girls" if the pets in question were all females. So the term is not even restricted to female humans, but it can mean any collection of female entities of any age, hence the term "girls' night out". Q.E.D. | |

| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 10:06:30 AM | Look, Cotter, I understand, REALLY, I do...
All I can say is that, as I age, I will welcome anyone calling me a girl anytime..

| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 10:37:26 AM | Women tend to think too much, over analyze so much. Women = baggage women = whining girl = usually no baggage girl = happy most of tht ime | |

| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 12:10:11 PM | #32 beat me to the punch.
Girl's are fun to be around, can laugh. They're sweet. Women are too serious, bichty and opinionated and sometimes lumpy.
|
| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 1:01:07 PM | Let's start a petition to change it from 'ask a girl' to 'ask a woman' since everyone here is 18 or older!
There's no other word close to the meaning of 'guy' for the female type, so I'm not seeing why it would be a problem. Especially in comparison to other words that could be used and the intent behind it.

| Why are they still saying that they want a girl ............. Posted: 6/22/2008 1:04:22 PM |
Isn't a "girl" a female under 18 years of age?
That is how I have always seen it, oddly though, whenever I have refered to a woman who is maybe 22ish at the bar, as a woman, I receive a response something like:
"Woman? WTH? I'm a girl"
So I bumped the age to about 25ish, at which point, your old, no longer a child, so I'm calling you a woman, not a girl.
I still use the word girls to mean a group of women, ladies sounds OK too.

I'm fairly certain that I'm still after a "MAN".
Are you ever after a "GUY"? Girl is the feminine equivalent of the pronoun, Guy, and both are used equally among the sexes in regards to each other. It just so happens that Girl can also be connotated as a female of younger age, while the male version of that connotation would be "boy."
I'm honestly not sure what the point of this thread is. It's a ridiculous topic and completely redundant.

this seems like a petty complaint, but i suppose if some ....female called me a "boy" i would probably see it as an invitation to **** with her mind using my superior intellect and ability to antagonize others, unless she was really old and to her I suppose I would be rather youthful.
but i guess there is a double standard.
Yes, there is a double standard - and not. From my experience, many of those men looking for a "girl" are exactly looking for that: Someone immature, someone with a very young ("young" as in "does not quite know what she wants) mindset - someone, they can form as well as someone that makes them feel younger themselves. Many of those "girl seekers" wouldn't want to - or couldn't - deal with an actual woman with a mature mindset, a career, and defined preferences and priorities.
Do I like being called a "girl"? No, I don't. I am a fully-grown woman, and I can only respect a man that is able to respect the fact that I have grown out of being a "girl" two decades ago. Thankfully, I have a man by my side that understands the differences and that does not refer to me as "his girl". And I clearly wouldn't want to date a "boy" myself.

I could walk into a room filled with 80 year old women and very comfortably address the crowd with saying "Hi Girls!" It means nothing negative, if anything it's a term of endearment. Be thankful for anyone who refers to you as a girl because if it stops, you'll miss it one day when people only make you feel like an old woman.

| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 1:31:29 PM | I've wondered that too.
I've had numerous men become offended when I referred to them as a "boy," but they still insist on calling me, at almost 30 years old, a girl. I don't let it bother me, but I do think it's weird.

As I said earlier, the term Boy is connotated as a male under the age of 18 (or an immature male, if you're throwing names around), whereas Girl can either mean a female under 18, or just a general term for the female gender. The term Guy is the male equivalent of the latter connotation for Girl.
|
| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 1:46:33 PM | Kinda depends on the context....sometimes "girl" is very close to "chick" which I don't think is very complimentary. If it's used sincerely and not in a way meant to humiliate or demean someone it's a bit better. I think it's mostly men wanting to feel younger themselves and not acknowledging their own age!
And to the guy referencing Helen Reddy and wondering why any woman would take offense about "girl"....I'm sure you'd LOVE to be called "boy" - consider it the same when said in an otherwise demeaning manner.

Aurora - I think a likelier explanation is that nearly ALL men would take offense at being called a "boy" but you can get away with saying "girl" because EVERY woman wants to feel young again and we should be grateful for such a thing (as another poster said) ....complete B.S.

Now, GET ME A BEER, WOMAN!!!

| Why do they do that? Posted: 6/22/2008 2:23:02 PM | I'll get you a beer BOY, after you do me......Now is that a sexual endearment or demeaning?
Gal maybe a 'redneck' version of girl.....eventhough I 'm from the south...there's lots of bar/club bathrooms up here marked "guys" and "gals". Can't get much further north than NH.

Lol any any non-redneck state says "girls" on the door, not "gals," so how far does that go to prove my point? :P

Interesting factoid: up until the 14th century, IMS, children of both sexes under the age of 18 were referred to as "girls" in Europe.

Probably the same with the rest of the guys here. We are just so use to you acting like little girls that we naturally call you girls. I call the mature, moral, classy, responsible ones women or ladies. However, I don't find myself using that term too often anymore.
