my eldest was named after the kid in terminator, cause it was teh film i was watching while in labour. My youngest was named after an old welsh name that i always loved, so i have Connor and Geraint, which we then found out that they both have same meaning, Connor is old and wise in Irish, which is also the Welsh meanin of Geraint.

My eldests name was chosen as Tyrone.

Not my first favourite but then the fathers choice was that or Sid.

We agreed that a boy he would name, if the little one was a girl I got the choice.

Now there was no bloody way was I standing there shouting Sid dinner's ready, or saying my son's name was Sid Macpherson lol, so Tye it was.

It took the Irish midwife on the ward to say his name aloud for me to warm to it, but now love it.

My son's name was chosen after looking at a family tree - we both saw it and immediately said YES THAT'S IT!!!

We had chosen my daughter's name same time as pregnant with my son just because it's sort of similar to his name. Lucky she was a girl because we couldnt agree on a second boy's name. I really do love her name and you know what I mean when I say it suits her? but do wish I had gone with my wishes and called her Scarlett. Just love that name. But I guess that's comprising in marriage for you....

Both have my maiden name as their middle name.

Good God............I shouldn't have watched Knots Landing............Loved the name of one of the main actors...................

Likewise, should have stayed away from Hart to Hart...............but again it worked out well, as he ended up with the same initials as his dad (bless) and both his names are variants of his dads name..................

On the note of initials.................My neighbour has a number plate with his on.........

"___ SHT" only needs an I in there somewhere..........................

There are lots of old fashoined traditional names in my family and also lots of different names, but they seem to work and suit the people who have them.
Both my boys have different names 1 being an old fashoined french name and the other an old fashoined hebrew name. When i had them i was sure i would get a girl and had only set my heart on 1 boys name,so thier dad had picked the other(which i didnt even like) so we ended up with Marlon -Lee and Cailem-Chay.
I now also have a lovely little girl named Faith, simple old fashioned but lovely and so suited.

The names I had in mind for my children are always good for a laugh. (well my sons anyway)

My daughter was called Maeve wich means lovely one. (Yeah right) My ex chose it.
I had a list of names for a girl due to the fact that I wanted it to fit her. We have a large aray of skin and hair colours in the family. So I came up with this for a girl

Black hair, olive skin: Raven
dark hair, pale skin: Morgaine le faye
ginger: Sonja
blond: Bell

The ex did not want Morgaine so Maeve it was (grrrrrrrr)

As for my son,

Starbuck (I know, I know, but I realy fancied the guy from Starship Galactica)
Oliver , because Oliver Twist is my fav. book

I came to my sences and called him Oliver

When i got pregnant with my 3rd baby, i had just started a new job in an office. My pc required a 6 letter password at the time and i used the first 3 letters of each of my sons name-Niall and Shaun!
The result: Nia-sha, pronounced Neesha!
My 3rd baby was born a girl, and that name came to me as soon as i saw her. She was my little Niasha, her name coming from her 2 brothers names!
Everyone thought it was a wonderful idea, and now (aged 6) she just loves telling everyone where her name came from!!

Thought I would revive this thread as my son just came in rolling with laughter at watching newsround. There was a story on there regarding unusual names. The kids on there were called:

bus station number 17(presume this was copying the Beckhams!)

tallullahdoesthehullah...???(she has since changed her name seemingly)

and a pair of twins called fish and chips! (poor kids)

I personally named mine as I liked the names, traditional ones both of mine and biblical at same time. Sarah and Thomas.

my ex was adamant that our first girl would be called Sapphire to commemorate a little nortyness in said car

Hmmm, just as well we didn't go that route or my daughter would now be known as Triumph Herald!

I would never call a child anything unusual so the kids in the playground could pick up on her/him..

I think it is rubbish way of underlining the fact the parents are eccentric and this does the child only the headache.

The poor kids have to carry that name their whole life.

I also noticed with some adults who were given unusual names in name of modern and eccentric that they kind of have an identity problem, think themselves they are better than the other crowd, can not adopt into the society etc.. etc..

I have few friends like this, they do not have a feeling of belonging into the society and have issues thinking they are special or irreplaceable.

Well, everyone is special, yet everyone is replaceable. I myself had to learn this the hard way !

I try to teach my child that nothing really matters, the names, the family history, the fame, the schooling, the fashion.. nothing really...

The only thing that matters are our own actions which we are responsible of.

I wanted 4 children so I could name them after the Teletubbies.

My son doesn't know I chose his name from a female actress' surname. When he was born, the name just suited him. All the others I had in mind went out of the window.

I was going to spell it with a K instead of a C, but thought no.

But now my son shortens his name and starts it with a K, and all his mates call him it with his version.

I wanted a feminine pretty name and I chose one. Ironically it means 'wealth' but I interpret that not to mean materials necessarily more like a wealth of love, beauty, talent and warmth - all of which she has and is.
