Does a good friend stand by silently when someone they care about do something dishonourable ? I know I wouldnt want to have in my life people like that who sat back and said nothing. that doesnt define a good mate to me..

I guess the point that strikes me about that statement is that, personally, I don't see a friend not paying me back because they can't, as dishonourable. I see them as being unable to pay me back, end of story. I would be totally fine with that...because.... as some people have said, myself included, paying back would not have been an expectation in the first place even if they said they intended to. Not when we're talking about a friend.

The term friends is bandied around. I have few. I know a lot of people but I have only a handful of people I would entrust my life, my kids future let alone money to. To them I woulndt hesitate to help if I could

Yep...well said, and that's pretty much the sentiment I was trying to get out there too. Maybe it all comes back to how loosely a person uses the term 'friend' as to whether that person strikes too many issues of this nature? Apparently some people think that unless you embrace every person who crosses your path as a friend, you must be a negative or unfriendly person. lol. I'd say discerning. You end up with quality people in your life. Works for me.

I have given friends and family money (under $1,000) without considering it a loan, dont expect it back so never let down. I dont do it often and if ever the hand was held out to me too many times the answer would be NO. For family, I trust them and know them well and if they needed money I know it was because of something happening beyond their control as they are all very responsible hard working ppl. If it was a friend that needed more than $1,000 I would be looking at ways of helping them other than finincial.

If I had a friends or a friend I probably would lend them money, as long as it wasn't leaving me short.
It can ruin friendships.
Smaller amounts can be easily forgotten about, especially at the pub. But if someone wants to borrow a large amount it usually means they're in trouble already & the chance of getting it back, short term, is minimal.
Hope for the best & expect the worst.

BTW... I got 3 days holiday for jokingly asking for a $50 loan in a thread about trust.

Every one has valid points, I guess if someone owes you money but can afford theme parks, expensive named brand clothing, dinners out, holidays, other so called luxury items its hard to see why the cant you wonder why they wont. Or in my instance you walk away and go o well khama is a good thing or a real ****. I come here after the fact and feeling had gone see if anyone else had a similar experience.
I will never see the money or his fish face again... yep a lazy few hundy is a cheap experience really.
