| Is it considered whussy for a guy to have a fear of bugs? Posted: 6/25/2008 9:52:56 PM | No, not considered whussy in my rule book. People are people and everyone is different. Fear of mice and rats , for example, is one of the three most common fears. Fears of height is another one.
Just go easy on the pesticide sprays, that stuff is poison. Not only for them. If you use the baking soda, mix it with something tasty like sugar (as an attractant). Fine dustings with Food grade Diatomaceous Earth will kill them, too. And it's better for you.
If I had a phobia like you, I would do EFT on it (Emotional Freedom Technique) until my symptoms were significantly lower.

| Is it considered whussy for a guy to have a fear of bugs? Posted: 6/26/2008 5:01:16 PM | | I think anyone, male or female, who is afraid of insects, spiders, millipedes, or the like is quite silly. I find those sorts of animals fascinating, so I have never really been able to understand why people feel threatened by them. Then again, I have an irrational fear of wild mice (although I love the pet kind) so I do know what it's like. | |

| Is it considered whussy for a guy to have a fear of bugs? Posted: 6/26/2008 5:39:56 PM | I had a roommate who, to everyone who knew him he was a total Don Juan, he rode a motorcycle, acted cool around the ladies, the whole nine yards. But he was scared to death of spiders. He would have me come in his room or closet or whatever to get rid of some spider that was freaking him out.
I also had a girlfriend who was deathly afraid of snakes. One day we were walking on a bike/hiking trail, and in front of us was this huge California king snake apparently sunning itself in the middle of the trail. She immediately freaked and took off in the other direction before I could even respond. I kinda stood there thinking "yeah, its a snake" , and it wasn't even a poisonous one.
A California Kingsnake does look sort of like a Coral snake which is very poisonous, but it was still well ahead of us out of striking range even if it was. Generally poisonous snakes will not bite unless you step on them-it is the ones you don't see that are dangerous.
There are certain animals I don't particularly like to be around, but most little critters I am not afraid of unless they are poisonous. I don't like to touch slugs because the slime is difficult to remove from your skin if you do. I don't like to touch spiders because I don't know which ones are poisonous(I use tissue paper to pick them up), and I would rather my place be****oach free but I don't freak out if I see one.
I am weird in that I actually like snakes, I even had a pet snake when I was a kid. The only irrational thing that ever gave me the creeps were butterflies. That is because my uncle, who collected butterflies, caught one for me and put it in a jar that was supposed to kill it. Afterwards it mysteriously came to life in my bedroom and in my 2 year old mind I thought it came back from the dead. Later on I lost the fear when I started doing photography- I liked taking pictures of butterflies and I forgot about the silly fear I had of them.

The only bug that really skeeves me out are those stupid wolf spiders. Fellow Floridians know exactly what I mean. They are harmless but always make me jump.

| Is it considered whussy for a guy to have a fear of bugs? Posted: 6/28/2008 1:46:43 PM | We're all individuals, with individual phobias, as well. Personally, I don't have a problem killing bugs in my house. When you have kids it doesn't matter if it's Mom or Dad who takes care of it.
However, my boys STILL are apt to call Mom when there's a bug. I'm trying to help them get over it so they can be the "great white hunter" for their ladies some day.
I don't recall that I've ever been around a guy that would run away or ask ME to kill the bug for him so I don't know what my reaction would be. Hopefully, I'll never have to find out!

Stretch your boundaries, challenge and think through the things that bother you and you will find it very liberating and life changing.
I have a leech phobia I have tried to address without success, yep I do the whole screaming/strip off etc thing - not real good for someone who wants to rejoin the scouting movement.... I've made plastic leeches with black silicon to try desensitise myself, kept a couple of live ones in a jar, I've gone through leech infested places with my trusty vicks/liniment but I still haven't beaten it. As a Buddhist I am not supposed to kill anything but hmm undeniably beatiful and elegant as they are, leeches are still my nemesis.
When you have a fear, and phobias are frequently irrational, it often stems from a childhood experience as does mine. You can, retrain your attitude if you really mean business about it. As a mum taking my children for walks, well we did discuss the idea that mum might turn into an 8 year old and how we might tackle it, most things can be tackled with strategies and forethought.
If bugs really bother you, take more Vitamin B they seem to really dislike the aroma it gives your skin and just get your pest spraying done annually. There are electronic devices that deter****oaches with their high frequency sound. I have found spiders are not unintelligent creatures - far from it, they appear to have the intelligence of a dog. They will frequently respond to threats and a request to leave but they are the healthier option than nerve toxic fly spray.

| Is it considered whussy for a guy to have a fear of bugs? Posted: 6/30/2008 7:27:35 AM | I know this is the "ask a girl" forum but I will answer...heck no! I am a 31-year-old man and have had a serious fear of arachnids since I saw a tarantula crawling around the house in Florida when I was about six. I try to think of inventive ways to kill them, since I am usually shaking way too much to just squish them like a 'real man'.
BUT..I am willing to kill the spiders for the right woman!

| Is it considered whussy for a guy to have a fear of bugs? Posted: 6/30/2008 1:06:25 PM | You know I always had a fear of spiders, but when I was 19, I dated a girl that spotted a spider way off in the corner of her room. She started screaming to kill it even though it was 15 feet away. When I went up to the ceiling to kill it, she said no wait, his spider friends might miss him!
So I grabbed the spider by the leg and carried him down the stairs, out the front door and threw him in the grass.
Since then I have not been afraid of any bug.
