Sorry mac I disagree, a meet at a club without a pre meet is terrible cos the music is too loud, you can't work out who is with who, whoo is friends with who and its not a rule that people have to be single.
A pre meet lets you get to know others, relaxes, encourages people to mingle.

I see nothing wrong with a bowling night or quiz night, I met my gf in Liverpool at a pub quiz, certainly broke the ice. I was soooo shy it was unbelievable. (I've had some fantastic times in Liverpool, it's a great city. )
Walks are good too, as are lunches but they tend to be older people, maybe young ones don't eat lunch. Picnics are great meets but as I asked my questions in my North Warwickshire meets about out door meets are they suitable. I quoted a comment criticising me for it raining. Barbecue's too, there's one this Sunday near Derby on the meet threads.
all great alternatives to clubs and all give a lot more chance to break the ice than a club with loud music.

If you need to arrange a pre meet where people need to be encouraged to mingle or hear themselves above the music then the chances are you have chosen the wrong venue in the first place !!

We are all adults and I for one am not a babysitter for other adults ..........as a host my duty is to find a venue and arrange the meet and then enjoy myself as other members do ......thats it !!

Hosts are simply just members, same as everyone else........nothing more or nothing less .

Arrange the meet and let nature take its course .......its really that simple.

Start a fire.

The scramble for the exits and the resulting drama/aftermath should be enough to bring quite a few people together to discuss their shared experience.

The real men and women will come to the fore and demonstrate their actual versus their stated qualities.

The Social Psychology Of Cataclysmic Crisis.

Now work out how to stage "Cataclysmic Crisis" in a believable and safe way ...and we will have the solution. A nice little earner too...

The Murder Mystery events and the paintballing wont cut it any more never mind the DJ led games so many events rely on.

On a more easy to implement basis

Why not have colour coded name badges. A different colour could indicate your personality type or some other useful status/trait.

If you approach someone that is self confessed, "outgoing"," shy" etc, you can save a lot of time and engage them more efficiently.

A host can more easily a engage the audience with less risk of putting their foot in it.

That may be a host but in my opinion its not a good host. A good host arranges a pre meet and and tries to make sure people on their own aren't left out without harassing them and trying to push them into doing things they don't want to do. A good hosts has co hosts to do that to. If its in a big night club and there's the host on the door there's no one in club to host. A lot of these people are insecure, shy, frightened, some haven't been in a club for years.
A pre meet works, it doesn't need a pre meet for the pre meet, we only need to go as far as what works, and that works. Over the past six months. I've been to 11 different meet venues with varying entertainment and themes. Of those the ones with hosts that tried to get us chatting, usually with a pre meet and ones where I knew people were by far the best ones. The ones without a pre meet and where I missed a pre meet were far less enjoyable. On amounts of attendees, the Smaller meets whilst limiting potential matches are by far the most enjoyable. Out of types of meet , for me camping was the best, I will never forget shell island, then the picnic then the clubs, pubs and lastly karaoke although the one in Atherstone was quite good because we could chat over it. Clubs are noisy unsuitable for getting to know people, and a quieter side bar is a great asset.
All in my opinion of course based on the 11 different venues and 3 singles nights I attend.

In my experience of being on here over three and a half years the ego's who claim to be 'good hosts' or even the 'best hosts' have killed off many a good meet and lost many a good friend!!

Its a very simple process that any member can arrange ...........keep it simple !!

Hosts are just members the same as everyone else attending .......check out the simplicity of the hosting rules!!

I too am with mac on this one, and its a simple procces. most of you forget, its the people who attend that makes a venue meet /place rock. Show them a relaxed night, good mix of music, and happy faces and they will want more, popularity of a good night out .. can be gain by even a small towns, as well as big citie's with bright lights!
Remember its word of mouth.. or power of the words we type in and around the site.

Sigh, this one again....

#1 a host does not get paid.
#2 a host is a member just like all others attending the meet
#3 a host does not have to meet and greet everyone who comes to the meet, read the rules of hosting if in doubt as to what is expected of a host.
#3 Not all meets will be to everyones cup of tea, this does not mean that it is a 'bad meet' just that everyone has different likes and dislikes.

The good hosts don't claim to be good hosts, they just keep quiet and get on with it

On that point I will agree.

#1 a host does not get paid.

#3 a host does not have to meet and greet everyone who comes to the meet, read the rules of hosting if in doubt as to what is expected of a host.

Thanks Krusty, its good to humble people once in while.

can't we all meet in an internet cafe?
then we could just message:
can I get you a drink?
you're looking hot......etc
works for me.....

I like that idea!........We could still post on the UK forum if nobody was interested!

I'm thinking about organising a POF meet in my local church as you get free wine there.

The trouble with icebreakers is, they are toe curlingly embarassing to most folk

What about having a room full of computers, and people can message each other?

I remember seeing something about a Muslim country (could have been Iran) where 'singles' aren't allowed to meet but go to bars (tea, coffee?) and text each other or something similar (message, bluetooth?). I think in another country there was also a bar with some sort of comms TV on each table and contact could be made via table numbers. Maybe get Maplins or a phone company to sponsor a meet and supply the kit?

Before anyone claims the smallest POF meet, Me and Paul hosted the first 4 Leeds meets, and there were 2 of us, except the one where my son came.

And since then we meet every Wednesday, everyone is still invited, but we are happy to chat amongst ourselves untill anyone else arives, (to be honest we take the piss out of each other or gossip about other Fish). We have had up to twenty on a Wed night, but lately it's been us 2 with the odd visitor.

Edit, also we tend not to put a lot of effort in, we are happy with our own company. We provide a venue and a date, folk attending can either mingle and make friends, or not. Perhaps thats why only the folk who like our meets still come. Them that don't can stay away, the last thing we want is critisism for doing somat voluntary.

Invite a herd of sheep and a sheep shearer. (Got the idea from another thread)

The guys can make donations and the ladies can knit them a commemorative sweater.

And the lanolin in the wool will make your hands all soft

Very non PC I know, but if you have a venue with a large smoking area close to the "action" (a large patio for instance), then you will actualy find that the smokers will go outside, have a mutual thing going and the mixing tends to start there, then the non smokers come to find them, and hey presto, you have ice breakers.

dont knock it, it worked very well at the brum meets of old.

i reckon people should go paintballing first then you can discuss who shot who and the looney that started rifle butting people and ran off into the woods because charlie was out to get him and sarge is dead and he is still out there hiding in the woods behind enemy lines.

Maybe people could have name badges in different colours based on what they are looking for eg - red for dating, yellow for friendship etc.. You could see at an event at a glance what people were looking for then on the night, instead of guessing.

Theres a twist to that game where couples throw thier keys in a bowl.
This is is two bowls, one guys, one gals, and each picks a name tag from the other bowl... you get the idea...

Or my personal favorite is naked twister.
Always goes down well

Naked Twister? I find even the merest possibility that I may end up looking up some random stranger's potty slot more than a tiny bit frightening.

I am anti Pre meet, having thought about and seen it's effects on others meets, I have never done had one, and never intend too ...

All it leads to is a group of people getting twatted before turning up at the venue, which is not what I would want to see at my meets at the start of the night..

It also leads to a "Click" with the Host walking in regaled by its entourage, tut tut..

Let everyone meet at the same time, on the same level, and enjoy the night together, whether it be getting drunk through the course of the night, or just talking ..

Besides would it not be nice to actually remember who is at the meet..

Technically a hosts job is done once the venue has been secured, the thread created and questions answered..

It is nice if they make the effort to say hello to their guests, and introduce those that have been brave enough to come alone, to others, but it's no great sweat, unless you chose to make it..

Badges are great if the members want to wear them, Sam's idea is a good one, but that is down to personal choice and all it requires is a roll of sticky labels that can be written by the members if they so wish ..

The members make the night, the host is merely another attendee..

How about we print or draw a fish on every label? No name, just a fish so WE all know we're fishes... then we could colour the fish as Sam's suggested (what colour's intimate encounter lol?!!! Scarlet?!!) and leave marker pens so IF people want to reveal their names on the badge they can write either their real first name or their POF name on themselves!

If the event is exclusive there would be no need, but there is a fish that can be downloaded and printed , here is the link ..
