I've got to ask though, " is'nt plastic a bi product of oil" ?
What shall we make the plastic bags out of, when the wells run dry ?

Pete Tosh used to sing "what you gonna do when the well runs dry" too..

And that reminds me.. The answer is obvious.. Oil derived from the Hemp plant. Biodegradable natural and perfect oil, probably better than the oil 'they' have patented and synthesized at great cost to ourselves and the planet, for the privilege of attempting to reproduce something that nature has already perfected in the first place.

Hemp is a great gift to humanity, but not to the governments who are keen on making money, as we all know that they cannot patent a plant, so they demonise it and make it illegal instead, (under their 'war on drugs' guise), as it is a huge threat to them and their money/power/control.

You can even run cars on the stuff, and build cars and boats out of the material, amongst many other things. In fact, it is the only plant that has no natural living enemies (apart from the government of course) and grows at a phenomenal pace much faster than any plant/tree known to man, and if that wasn't enough, its the only plant that cannot be choked by weeds or be attacked by any insects. There was a time when Washington, the president of USA made it a law that each farm/land owner HAD to grow so many acres/hectares of hemp crop, due to its usefulness in the industry. (50,000 industrial uses).

Washington grew hemp (marijuana) which was commonly grown for making rope, clothing, paper, etc, and still could be done so today if the government would allow it. Washington's journals also record that he separated female from male plants which has led some to suggest that he also grew it for smoking purposes.

When I get asked if I'd like a hand with my packing, I always tell them .."If I go too slow you can give me a hand'.. which always seemed to completely pickle their heads and look at me like i am insane.. almost as if to say.. "how dare you attempt to engage my brain cells into being consciously aware of the pace I'm checking out your items, compared to the speed at which you're bagging your shopping, and make decisions based upon those calculations!".

They insist on asking in supermarkets even if I have 4 or 5 items. Perhaps I look incapable of packing my own bag

no, thats only polypropylene and polyethylene. Some products are made from more natural products... like tree sap (Oh wait that doesnt back up my arguement for not using paper bags does it... :P

I prefer to pack my own bags...the assistants make them too heavy or put my washing soap with the food which really annoys me...they have no idea some times...I hate it when they ask 'do you need a bag'..Wilkinsons do this...I havent got into the habit of carrying a bag around with me (maybe I should eh?)...Sometimes Asda use army cadets or the like to pack your shopping and they have no idea either...if you pack yourself you only have yourself to blame for breakages etc !!

If you're not happy with the level of customer service in a certain store then take your business elsewhere.

Moaning about it won't get you anywhere. I sometimes think that we've turned into a nation of moaners and that the primary objective of a large portion of the general public is to be as much of a pain in the @rse as possible.

My way of dealing with this is not to pay until all items are packed and just take your time.. Especially on the new self service belt ones at large supermarkets ... Scan products in,place on belt , Pack items and then pay otherwise if you pay and then pack others start to use the machine

Fer Gawds sake, its not rocket science izzit ?? if you cant pack your own stuff into a plastic bag you shouldnt be allowed out on yer own !!!

If you are desperate to get someone to help you, try asda or tesco ... they offer to help even though you have just bought a paper and a butty ..............

When that bloke got killed by those two people in the supermarket recently after an argument at the checkout I did wonder what would drive people to get so upset and do that.

It's now starting to become clear.

I generally get asked but I certainly don't expect it, particularly if they are busy and just trying to get people through the checkout as quick as they can. I have worked in retail and it can be a thoroughly miserable experience at times. I have always been incredibly polite and helpful but it seems some consider retail staff second class citizens and should be grateful they have deigned to use their till.

I now use the self service tills wherever I can, even M&S has them now. Can go at my own pace and pack as I like. It is annoying when someone who blatantly hasn't the foggiest idea how it works thinks that a busy Saturday afternoon is the day to do experimental battle with the self service tills

I also have my sturdy re-usable hessian bags with me nearly all the time and even buy bio-degradeable bin bags. Doing our little bit is really rather easy.

I'm sure tesco would save a fortune and quite a few landfills if they trained their home delivery packers to pack stuff appropriately. When you get one or two things in a bag its kind of ridiculous.

You can choose to have your shopping delivered sans bags and they will also take away any plastic bags you have, emptied a whole cupboard full to them a while back before I got my re-usables.

I usually get asked at my local asda if I need help with my packing, and I always politely refuse and pack my own, but if my kids are with me , it sets them of into fits of giggles and they end up calling me grandad for the rest of the shopping expidition!

when I go to tescos it takes me ages to open the bloody bags..I look like Im trying to start a fire by rubbing the plastic bags to open. If I go to Aldi I have all the shopping on the conveyor belt but the speed it goes through the till , well , its like an work out at the gym and everthing gets dumped in the trolley.

wohooo im not the only one lol

and i can remember an Aldi years ago @ crosshands (carmarthenshire) before the barcode readers and the staff had to memorise all items prices as they not marked on item and the speed it came through the checkout was ballistic lol as you say just dump in trolley and pack in car :)

Always amazed me how the cashiers at Aldi memorised the prices of all the stock! when i worked as a bar person if i had an order of more than 3 or 4 drinks id have to go back & ask them what they had ordered(sometimes more than once)...memory like a sieve!!!
