In fact age should never be a consideration in anything you do IMO anyway.
That is about the most sensible statement I have ever seen on these forums!
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 9:59:37 AM | I'm so glad to read that many men think tats are a turn off ! I will never, ever get one. Which in a few years it will no longer be the trendy thing to do.
My daughter had her entire left calf tattoed "in loving memory of dad" with a huge cross and I'm sure he's flippin' in his grave...cuz he hated 'em.
So I gave her strict orders NOT TO DOODLE my name nor any symbolism to honor me. For shuch would be a disgrace to me.
So mothers and grandmothers, please tell your child or grandchildren if you DO NOT want them to inject ink into their skin, to honor your memory. It's not necessary in my opinion.
But if they care about what you think and how you feel, they'll leave that notion alone.
I'm just sayin'. | |

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 10:42:47 AM | Hey...I respect that not everyone is going to like or appreciate tats! I have said it a million times, probably...but if we were all identical in our thought processes, likes and dislikes...the world would be a terribly boring place full of conformity! Ugh.
But...no one has any right to expect someone to NOT get something...it's their choice. You can certainly make it known, SunnyTexas...but something tells me that it won't matter!
Yanno'...when I was thinking of inkin...I always said I would NEVER get names, and most definitely never an SO's name. I chose my son & daughter tribute tats because it enabled me to get something covering all four of my children, with two tats. Plus, I just think names are boring! But I did get a custom Harley tat...and in place of the classic MC for motorcycles, I got his initials...and have NO REGRETS of such. He freaked a bit, initially...lol...but he is past it. MY BODY...MY INK.
I do not get them for anyone but myself. If I did, I would choose to be inked in more visible places, but none of mine are visible unless I have a tank on, and my hair up. That's not to say that won't change...hehe. :)

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 12:46:18 PM | | I think it is funny when people think that other people care whether they like tatts or not. If you don't want one don't get one. Just don't expect to dis my tatt. | |
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 1:28:15 PM | | I waited till I was 47 to get my first tattoo, it is of Pegasus on my right shoulder- me and my sister were driving past a tattoo parlor and looked at each other and said "why not" I love it, also I had it done in memory of my sister who died. | |

Well I don't know, she did promise me she wouldn't brand herself for my sake. After all, that skin...came from my loins, I in essence made it. She respects me enough to honor my feeling about it. I don't just find tats distasteful....mostly I find them hideous vanity.
I often wonder what disfigured burned victims think when they see people going to extremes to "sleeve out" their arms....thinkin'...if I just had normal skin, I'd be happy. But instead they see people maming themselves with the trend.
But what's really cute, is when a heavily tattoed person wants to dis me for sunbathing ! Oh ! now that's precious !
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 3:06:52 PM | LOL...good reasoning...and only you know your daughter!
I know a burn victim, and several cancer/masectomy victims...who have chosen to cover their scars, with...you guessed it! Ink! ;)
Sunbathing and tats are two different ballgames...if you choose an ink parlor wisely, you will have NO problems...and definitely not skin cancer!

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 4:25:24 PM | My friend has a bar code on her neck,, I thought that to be a tad strange,, still her skin, her choice. I have a couple, again, my skin, my choice. If you see them and find the "look" distasteful ~ move on. Got along without you before I met you,, gonna get along without you now. Oh, wait, this is about tats, not C&W songs. My daughter, with her uptight republican attitudes, hates mine. She told me once that it was so white trashy, just said, well hon, you know, the acorn don't fall far from the tree. Her child just got one,, did it on her 18th birthday just a couple of weeks ago, soon as she was done she sent me a picture of it with her phone. Guess the acorns are still falling close.

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 6:06:16 PM | | Sunnytexas, never thought I would ever get a tat. I'm now designing my next one. It's one that will always remind me of my Mother who is my best friend. The only person that has anything to say about it is me. You like to sunbath, I perfer ink. But that is just me. | |

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 7:46:07 PM | | I have worked in a nursing home for ver 10 years and the tats which look good at 20, look ok at 40 can leave a rather unpleasant visual impression on nursing home staff when they have to care of an 85 year old whose body sports several tats which, by now, are faded and drawn out (& down) by age and gravity. | |
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 7:48:39 PM | RogerLee...iffen I am in a nursing home when I am 85...I don't think I will give a darn what my tats look like then! ;)
But aside from that...getting them later in life is then an advantage...less fading and such!

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 9:09:20 PM | The only reasonable excuse to have someone draw on you in permanent ink is to cover an injury. But it usually calls attention to the spot. I think they are cries for attention, so I avoid women with them like the plague.
There is a reason they call the butt-tats "tramp stamp". A Carlin said, "the only reason to go out with a woman who has a tattoo, is that she is used to waking up in the morning thinking 'Oh, God, what have I done????'" Many of the guys who tell you they love your tattoo on Friday night are hating it on Saturday morning, after they have ...you know...played the Serta Twister with you.
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 9:36:17 PM | | I don't have any tats and probably never will. I've only seen a very few that I liked, one being a cute little leprechaun that my friend had done on her lower abdomen while in Ireland. The only problem is while she was pregnant it became more of a stretched out green blob and is now a chubbier little leprechaun...but still very cute! | |
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/1/2008 9:38:35 PM | Yes indeedy denhunter, that's what I was thinkin'.
I just wonder if they really think it through, I mean there should be a wating period.
My son in law got the four friggin' NINJA TURTLES tattoed on his arm ! Now....c'mon. How immature is that ! It looks absolutely stupid !
There is no doubt my daughter was influenced by him to get her tat, she never wanted one before....I think she should add to it..."In loving memory of Dad's MONEY" !

Wow, new reason to get a tat...eliminate the closed mind people.
I have never understood why one person would ever feel they had the right to set in judgement of what someone else has done. Pursuit of Happiness...people have fought and died for our rights and for some reason you think your opinion matter...this wasnt a thread asking if you like tatoo's but a way for people who have decide to get a tatoo to share it with others. Exactly who is looking for attention?????
On topic, after talking to my daughter who thought up the idea of the baby feet with Joyce's birthday in it, she said we should just go have them done together, now my older child is going to to it to...will have four symbols on each one...baby feet for Joyce, butterfly for me, lotus for Clar and a star for Cameron, and Ill gladly love it in a nursing home when Im 85.
If a man doesnt find it attractive he has a choice of not looking or going away and if he is that closed minded please exit now!

WOW ! Sapphireeyes, a little sensitive are ya ? wonder why? and yes contrary to how you feel, this topic is about how people feel about tattoos on older people.
People fought and died for our freedoms to have opinions and to express them. You have a right to say you favor them and others have the right to disagree.
It's my opinion young and old people alike, DO GET tattoos for attention, why else ? Cuz it feels good ? I don't think so. Are you going to tell me you don't like it when people ask about or comment on your tats, or do ya only like it when folks compliment them? Are they only attempting to trample on your rights if they don't like them? My goodness, opinions and rights are two entirely different matters.
It is MY OPINION women get tattoos because they like the attention....no biggee. Deal with it...because you know what they say about opinions...ever'body's got one, yet not everyone has a tattoo....the reason they don't is simple...they don't like them. Yes, we also have the right to judge in our hearts, but my goodness...when did the judgement of others, stop ya ? So what ? You like your tats, I'm happy for ya !
Could you not remember these children or loved ones if they weren't indelibly doodled on ya ? Of course you would. That's like sayin' I wouldn't remember my daughter bein' born, if there wasn't a C-section scar ? I bear it proudly.

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/2/2008 7:27:39 AM | I don't think Sapphire was being sensitive...I think she is in awe that someone would judge another person, on something like a tattoo. You people would probably be shocked at how many people have tats that you do not even know about...colleagues, doctors, lawyers, friends and family...who do not get inked to "draw attention" to themselves! You may never see some ink jobs...as I said earlier, I have to have a tank or strapless shirt on to view some of mine...others, you would not see unless we were more...initimate. In fact...recently when I was out to dinner with my kids, someone turned around and complimented me on my shoulder ink....took me a minute to realize I had a shirt on that they were visible with! lol
So...it's not sensitive or defensive...it's kind of like an awe at yet another stereotype which is innaccurate!
Regarding the comment made about "tramp stamps"...you would not think as you do, if the label of "tramp stamp" had not been attached to it! And we do not all refer to ours as such...I typically say "lower back."
And yes, we all have our opinions. But this is a forum where we are permitted to express and debate over such...and it is on topic. For example...it is my opinion of to each their own. I would never say something as outlandish as, "If someone does NOT have ink...then I would stay miles away from them!" LOL It would make me look...well..stupid! To judge a person on a tattoo, is like judging them on the jeans they wear, a piece of jewelry, or a hair color/style! Just plain silly! And if any of you anti-ink people met me at...say...a POF event, where you did not know I was inked...you would probably enjoy my company and think me to be a very sociable, outgoing, intelligent person! So those opinions would change once you discovered I have ink?! That is plain silly!

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/2/2008 7:43:24 AM | More and more people are getting them nowadays. It`s getting to be pretty commonplace, and alot of really intelligent successful people too. It`s not just for sailors any more. I`m quite conservative and at first I thought the whole thing was kind of weird but it is so usual now, not a big deal any more. Would it stop me from dating a guy, Would I think less of a gal? Heck no. The world is changing and sometimes you have to set old notions and stereotypes aside and go with it.
My favorite celebrityTV chef and author Anthony Bourdain has several, and actually got one on his show, while in Asia. I certainly wouldn`t call that guy a loser, nor would I throw him out of bed for eating crackers or having a few tats.

LOL! Ever heard the phrase "Funerals/memorials are not for the dead. They're for the living." Tribute tats are expressions about the deceased, not expressions of the deceased. And we all expresss ourselves, grieve and honor differently. I've been to funerals/memorials that were so far removed from the decedent's personality/way of life that it would have been laughable under different circumstances. But it gave comfort and peace to those left behind. I don't see something like that any differently than I do tribute tats. You may say "I do! They're permanent!" Well... yeah... and most folks who get tats realize that. Contrary to popular belief, these days good tattoo artists do not work on people who are under the influence. A guy who complimented my tat just the other night asked where I had my work done and if I knew any good local artists cuz he would like to get one. When I asked what he had in mind he didn't have a clue. "If you don't know what you want, you don't need one."

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/2/2008 7:47:40 AM | Well, you know, if I find myself in a nursing home at 85, I'm sure it won't matter to me in the least, what the care givers think about my tats. As far as attention seeking through your tats,, I don't agree with that at all. I have one tat that no one has ever seen, aside from the person who did the work. Seems to get me no attention at all, guess I should have put it on my forehead instead. Opinions are anyone's right, we do all have them, that they are different, is what makes any subject of conversation interesting. Now judging others, well that can turn into a slippery slope in a hurry,, no I don't think it's my right to judge other people and their motivates for what they do,, but then, that's just my opinion. I did have a strange experience a couple of years ago related to one of the tats I have. I'd spent some time on the design and even took the pattern to the tat shop myself. I had never seen one like it, UNTIL, I met a woman one day and noticed a tat on her calf. I looked closer and realized it was almost a mirror image to mine! How strange was that?

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/2/2008 7:48:32 AM | Okay, then lets condider this......just for grins.....People get tattoos, for their own pleasure and aesthetics, and not for attention, then why would they get a tattoo that ONLY OTHERS can see?..like the "lower back" or "tramp stamp" or back/shoulder area ?
Just askin' ? Obviously they don't want to look at it all the time.
Another thing is all this "tribal" art stuff. I think you should be born of the tribe to carry the mark, but that's just my opinion. The symbols are very sacred to the tribes that follow them, not just somethin' you may think is "friggin' awesome, dude !"

| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/2/2008 8:01:52 AM | Desert Wild...I had to LMAO on your Anthony Bourdain comment! ;) Me loves AB...actually have him mentioned in my "interests" on my profile! ;O) He also did a 'Miami Ink' show, where they inked him! ;)
SunnyT...when you are say...showering and doing your morning routine? Do you wash your backside and lotion it up? I mean...you can't SEE it!? If you had a giant mole on your back...would you not remove it simply because YOU can't see it?!
My next tat is going to be a Betty Page style pin up biker girl...with my own facial and hair features incorporated in such. This one will either be on my arm or my thigh..have not decided yet. What it will signify for ME...is that side of me...which I do not go around displaying on a daily basis...but it's a tribute to...ME. lol
And then I am also having a portrait done of an early pic of my grandfather done....which will be with me because I believe he is my guardian angel and I want to have him with me more physically, than only spiritually.
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/2/2008 8:12:48 AM | | I'm glad you asked, Sunny, cuz a tat somewhere I couldn't readily see it myself (granted, perhaps while I was naked in the privacy of my bedroom/bathroom) is something I did not want. The tat above my left breast was strategically placed low enough that it is not visible unless I wish it to be... ahem!... and Lawd knows it ain't gonna do nothing but get lower as time goes on. LOL! The tat on my back right shoulder is there because it could not be placed on the front in the same manner. It had to be a specific size in order to achieve and contain the details I wanted. I can look over my shoulder into the mirror and see it just fine. And it was a bit of a sacrifice for me cuz I had hoped to save my back for battered, bullet-riddled, singed angel wings. I elect not to put tats on my arms cuz my employer may not like it, and I don't care for the look of most tats on limbs which IMHO can sometimes make them (the tats) appear distorted. Plus, I suspect it would be difficult to get a good tat over... uhm... hail damage. ;-) | |
|
| Grandma, show us your new tattoo! Posted: 7/2/2008 8:32:20 AM | Have ya'll seen the pink ribbon breast cancer survivor tats? They're really simple and pink, like a scar? I think those are symbols of strength and maybe if you saw it ever'day would remind you of how strong you really are. A survivor. Would you need it remind you, that you had cancer and now you don't? Nope....
I think if you survive breast cancer, you should bear the scars proudly as well. My neighbor has one and it's very tasteful. just a pale pink ribbon, almost flesh color.
So I'm not against them all. Just the really obnoxious ones really nauseate me.
