I did have a strange experience a couple of years ago related to one of the tats I have. I'd spent some time on the design and even took the pattern to the tat shop myself. I had never seen one like it, UNTIL, I met a woman one day and noticed a tat on her calf. I looked closer and realized it was almost a mirror image to mine! How strange was that?

you know, even though you might bring in original flash, they keep the designs and possibly, they add them to their own collection of flash that's available for patrons to choose from.

If you designed the work yourself, or had it designed...then took it to an artist...they have absolutely NO RIGHT to ink it on someone else.

Many artists will photograph every job they do...and you can say NO THANK YOU, but if it is your own artwork, I would definitely do such!

My son draws...and has done a lot of flash work...which can end up in a bevy of places. But the only way a truly original piece of work will get duplicated, is if you allowed your artist to photograph it, keep the stencil (if applicable) and they posted it somewhere.

Yes that's one explaination, however, she lived in Pa. and had never before been to Tx. where I met her. I might not have minded so much ~ if only I'd liked her better.

all but one tiny one and one large one were my own design, they never gave me the stencil, no matter where I went and even when I mentioned it. I don't know the etiquette involved for keeping original flash.

LOL...when you go into a tat parlor, they have loads of pre-drawn up art work that you can choose from. *blah*

You can vary them in colors, size, and sometimes a detail...but for the most part, they are a pic that's pre-drawn up and stenciled on.

Only advantage is that you do not have to pay for someone to draw you something...not enough in my eyes.

I think tatoos are ugly on men or women, young or old, it just looks like someone scribbled on them most of the time.

This ol grandma got one 30 some years ago before every one else in the world did. Of course it isn't visible to everyone. By the way - it didn't hurt that much and I do not drink or use drugs to kill the 'pain'. Have no desire for another ---don't want to be like everyone else.

I had a mother in law, that had all her toenails removed by the root (sunny shivers), because her toenails were really messed up and grew funny, after she healed up, she then she got her toenail beds tattoed red. It looked nice till y a looked really close, then it looked like her feet were bleeding....she passed away shortly after, but I'll never forget her or her tatted toes.

Yew, Sunny that is kinda gross... bleeding toes. I've never tatooed. I would like my next husband (no, there won't be one) to have my name tatooed on his assss just so I can rest assured he won't stray. My REAL name... not my POF name. (Psssss: It's not a common name, it's more of a persuasion).

My son got tats only after I gave my blessing. But I requested that he think each one through and only get something he would be proud to show ten, twenty, fifty years later. He has spiritual symbols in reasonable places.

I shall consider it a rite of passage for myself when I reach 60, or maybe the year I retire; or when I really get married again... like that's ever gonna happen.

Ouch...not sure which sounds more horrendous...having all your toenails removed, or having the nail beds inked?! Either way...my toes curled whilst reading such...and not the good sort!

Ashley...lol...something tells me that a name inked on a booty, is NOT an anti-straying tool! Think about it! ;) LOL

Well, I only get the henna tatoo's on vacation in the Caribean. Last year it was a Gecko on my ankle. Next year my brother says we will go to the pool bar for a couple of hours and then down to the tatoo shop. Once there we will choose each others tatoo's. I told him I didn't trust him but he says that is the point.

I believe tattoo's have to have a meaning behind them.
I had got mine on my 54th birthday and it was 2 small
angel wings and the word angel in red on my right shoulder.
Mine was for always having an angel on my shoulder watching
over me. But then again on my 53rd birthday i got my belly button pierced.
So i think im done with any more birthday surprises but i do like both of them.

I really don't understand statements like that.

The thing is....evidentially you didn't like your body or skin, untattoed and chose to change it. Don't tell me you just wanted to embellish the beauty you were born with. Your body's largest organ is .....your skin..... and you've doodled on 3/4 of it. So..don't tell us, WE have a problem and judge you harshly, you don't like your own skin ! YOU made the choice to tat, knowing that people are prone to judge the book by it's cover. Then whine about it, when they do. I don't think that's any more fair, than judging someone else....which you are, right?

You are judging others, for judging YOU.

You've made a choice to alter your body. Stick to your guns and live happy. If you like it...it's all that matters. Stigma will follow you the rest of your days. You knew that! I ain't sayin' it's right. It is what it is....deal with it.

Someone mentioned henna tattoos a few posts back. Those are a good choice if you think you might want a tattoo, but not not quite ready to make the leap. Those fade after a short period of time, maybe a couple of weeks, not sure exactly.
They are pretty, if you like tats.. You can find places to have them done by a professional, well not in the little burg I call home, but in cities probably.
I have also seen the products, including patterns, online, choose what you like and order the kit.

I used to work with a girl..probably in her late tenties....had a girl's name tattooed on her hand, of all places. I always assumed she was gay because of this...(it wasn't a name like Kim or Loren, that could go either way)....later I got to know her and it turns out that it was her daughter's name.

I also know a friend who is a tattooist and has probably 75% of his body inked, and is the sweetest, most gentle, family-loving man you could ever know.....and I have known some non-inked guys who are real azzholes.....

So definitely NEVER judge a man by his tats...instead, judge them by their personality....it's the HEART, not the SKIN, that means the most, in the long run.

You go ahead and call me judgmental and closed-minded. Tattoos are stupid. They are bad choices by people looking for attention, end of story. The idea that a butt crack tattoo is anything more than a sexual advertisement is ludicrous. Only if you are so vain that you examine your body in a mirror every day in minute detail could ANYONE suggest that they did it for themselves to only to see. I my view, they are an expression of a person who had an unresolved issue, and made a bad mistake attempting to resolve it, or have such a need for attention so strong that they will do anything that catches an eye. All of the other reasons are just excuses.

Before you consider joining the ranks of the "inked", I would suggest you consider this link. Note that some of the more hysterical ones are on page two:

Sorry for the posting of links. Didn't realize it was against the rules.

However, I did just find a website that discusses tattoos and other forms of body "art" and I had failed to include one other thing. Apparently, those that get tattoos get some form of excitement by being caused pain by a stranger. I hadn't realized it until I read a post on transforming human ears to look more alien on the tattoo website. They reported get excited about suffering "the most exquisite pain"...yeah, tattoos are for the mentally stable, alright....jeez. I can email it to anyone since I can't post the link.

Anyone wanting "pain caused by a stranger" could probably just get in a bar fight or something.

Cheaper and a lot less permanent!

yeah, tattoos are for the mentally stable, alright.

The National Geographic News stated in April 2000 that 15% of Americans were tattooed (or approximately 40 million people!)

Esquire Magazine estimated in March 2002 that 1 in 8 Americans was tattooed.

Thirty-six percent of those ages 18 to 25, and 40 percent of those ages 26 to 40, have at least one tattoo, according to a fall 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center.

Harris Poll, 2003, estimates that fully 36% of those aged 25-29 have one or more tattoos.

Apparently there are a lot of us mentally unstable folks!

Whatever has the above to do with 99.9% of people with tattoos. Sounds like someone is having a bad day.

Hey, I am just reporting what I read..,maybe 99.9 percent LIKE pain from strangers. Beats me! (pardon the pun)...but I'll never find out!

The funniest one was the young girl who in giant letters across her back " I'M AWSOME"...
Spelled exactly that way. Her kids will be proud. Or the guy with an ear of corn having sex with a stalk of broccoli...sure, it's just a way to express yourself....HA!!! Or the guy who's entire face was covered with smudge, who wore a coat and tie...sure, they aren't for attention, they are art! Or remembering a special event! (like having your head stuck in an ink bottle?) Come on, lighten up...everyone makes a mistake. Trying to rationalize them with a story only compounds the error.

And I am having a GREAT day. Killing a couple of hours looking up all of these funny tat links, though.
