Posted: 12/24/2005 12:32:09 PM | Oh Man , I envy you for seeing that one live, experiencing Jimi.....too bad I wasnt in my parent's plans back then IN 2002 I saw Prince at the NAC (National Art Centre) in Ottawa, 2000 tickets got sold out in 1,5 hours unannounced concert!! And the best part of it was that he never performed all the hits...(purple rain , when doves cry...etc). It was a pure funk with elements of hard rock - in one word phenomenal. Bass line shook the city

| The best concert you ever attended. Posted: 12/24/2005 3:46:03 PM | When I was in college I went to see Billy Cobham at Hofstra University. My friend and I shared the same suite at Stony Brook, NY. Anyway, this was back in '74. We saw him at this "coffee house" at Hofstra. There were just round tables to sit at and we were about 10 to 15 feet from the stage. We had some great weed too.
Another great concert was Frank Zappa also in '74 at some place in NJ that I can't recall the name. This time it was actually all six of us from our suite at Stony Brook. We were in the 5th and 6th rows. He had Captain Beefheart with him. This was when the "One Size Fits All" album came out.

It was at Maple Leaf Gardens of all places.... but Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon Concert was absolutely mind blowing and a landmark in music history. The only thing close was in the third row of Massey Hall for Cheech and Chong.

| The best concert you ever attended. Posted: 12/29/2005 9:38:49 PM | Mine would have to be the 1st time I saw Styx at the Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA. What an amazing venue. If you ever get a chance to go see a show there.. GO! You won't be sorry!
But I've seen some amazing shows over the years..
the 1st Concert was Ronnie James Dio and Yngwie Malmsteen.. 1986.. 14 years old and wow was blown away by the stage show.
Other mindblowing shows were:
AC/DC (Razors Edge) Rolling Stones (Voodoo Lounge) Pink Floyd (Division Bell) Styx & Bad Company (2001) (Front row at the Gorge.. can't get better than that!) Rush Vapor Trails Tour 2002 - First time in Edmonton since 1987
I've seen so many shows, 100+they all blend into one after a while. But there are a few shows that stay with you forever, and that's what the Styx shows I've seen at the Gorge are.
Great Memories! | |

| The best concert you ever attended. Posted: 12/30/2005 6:15:33 PM | I saw all mine at the Montreal forum:
April Wine w/ Loverboy opening - lots of Energy!! April Wine hit their peak then The Cars - past their peak ...but it was ok Moody Blues - it was just for the music...other than that the show was tame Stevie Wonder (1981): What a show! Stevie was ...well Stevie...I watched as he invited someone onstage to help him sing and he actually lowered the key and played like nothing happened to accomodate the guest! Elton John (1982): Awesome show - I will never forget how he first appeared as a silhouette out of the dry ice during the intro to Funeral For A Friend - still gives me goosebumps. It was possibly the best intro appearance I have ever seen. Elton was in his peak as a singer and composer. No schlocky tunes like the Lion King to hear. Paul McCartney (1989): I would have enjoyed this one much more if an overexcited fan had not spoiled the ending for me before the show began. I knew every song from the start to the end (was helpful to have bought his then recent album "Flowers In The Dirt"). Probably the best concert from the most prolific writer we know. Hall and Oates (1988): I had liked their eighties stuff so it was not that bad - again it was easy to follow because of their many hits. Huey Lewis and the News (1988): This was outdoors and the group were a real bunch of showmen....they put on a great show. Elton John (1988): Again this was outdoors and Elton showed up in a red peacock outfit. At this time he was no longer singing the higher parts of his songs...his voice was already strained and I believe the next year he had an operation on his vocal chords. Supertramp (1982): It was the last time I saw the original line-up together with Roger Hodgeson. He even announced that he was leaving for a solo career. It was a concert for the music and no one really took the spotlight...the group shared it together.
I saw other acts such as Harlequin, Pat Benetar, Quarterflash but I missed the Who in the early eighties...that would have been awesome to see.

| The best concert you ever attended. Posted: 12/31/2005 10:04:07 PM | At about 3 a.m., I guarantee I'll wake up, sit straight up in bed and blurt out the name of something amazing I've seen/heard and forgot to mention here, but this is what comes to mind right now:
Cowboy Junkies at a private show in a tiny dive bar. I sat about 5 feet from the stage and Margo Timmins' voice just seemed to float like airborne velvet around the place. Incredibly intimate.
Afghan Whigs not long after, same bar. Their drummer - his name escapes me - played the entire show completely bare assed naked, with a cigarette dangling from his mouth the whole time. I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for a hot ash to hit what was bouncing around down there. (Also, the music was very good.)
Siouxsie and the Banshees, UC Davis Freeborn Hall. As a geeky young cellist, I was floored to see they featured a cello player - up on a high stage, with smoke and effects and everything - DANG! Changed my life.
American Music Club, yet another small bar. It was just utterly beautiful.
And in another arena - I've seen lots of lovely concerts of "classical" music, but what comes to mind is a performance this month of the Messiah. The tenor (Daniel Ebbs, I think his name is - a voice professor at UOP) just had the purest, most astounding, gorgeous tone. It was awe-inspiring.
In the end, though, the most beautiful music ever played is usually done off the cuff, in someone's back yard, on a starlit night, with friends. Don't you think? (aw, holy Molly, I'm getting maudlin...)

| The best concert you ever attended. Posted: 12/31/2005 10:11:15 PM | First ever concert ? Mahogony Rush ( circa 1972-73 ...I think) just after they broke. Sat in the second row center, and was already a Hendrix fan.
The minute the music started, I suddenly realized what the word "loud" really meant. I had some problems hearing for about three days afterwards - but still worth it.
Also saw Bowie in the early Eighties with a young woman friend - who sat on my lap most of the show. Rebel, Rebel will never be the same after that night. At one point these aircraft landing lights illminated the stage, and the entire Forum was just tones of black and white. You know you are talking lighting, when you can feel the heat from about 500 feet away.
B.B. King in 1973 - before he went Los Vegas. If you didn't understand the blues on a DNA level after that show - you never will.
