I've got the bluetooth, just not the patience to learn how to use it. Fortunately, I don't spend a lot of time in the car so can probably get away without making the effort. On a side note, the day they allow people to chat on their cellphones while in the air may be my last in a plane.

thanks for making it all about me

I didn't mean to imply it's all about you.

But when you said there are "tons of things that WE do", the term "WE" generally includes you in the group. I agree there are a lot of distractions out there. The cell phone is just one more we can do without.

Blue... I always use we... to not exclude myself.... because I know that I am not the exclusion to any rule.... I am sure that at times we have all been unsafe.... distracted by something... to have just said you or others would have implied that I never do anything wrong.... which... well... my glass house doesn't like stones....

According to my most reputable radio talk show host there is NO PROOF that enforcing hands free cell phone conversations reduces the # of accidents in other states which have had the law in effect for a while now.

The fact that TEXTING is still permitted makes this law simply one of the stupidest things to come out of our state, PERIOD. I have driven more recklessly now that I have to worry about talking hands free- it's a joke.

Speakerphone, having the kids hold it, making sure both hands are on the steering wheel [which I NEVER do btw] when talking and driving.

Please don't suggest I take this ridiculous law seriously when texting while driving is still legal. Talk to me when that is part of the law too.

And for the record texting should be illegal whereas talking should not.

This law actually ENCOURAGES people to do more texting, now think about it.

Assinine!

Blue 70....

I have a great bluetooth contraption that clips on my car visor.... it is a hands free speaker,.... and it has caller id.... when someone calls I just hit the button on the contraption and the person is there.... works great.... makes hands free talking easy...

I couldn't agree more. It IS a loophole in the law and I'm sure it will be fixed. Texting is far more dangerous and should be outlawed. But in the final analysis, driving with two hands on the wheel is a must. With only one hand on the wheel, you can't use the other to down shift if necessary. You also can't use your turn signals while holding a phone. That IS dangerous. I've seen lots of drivers change lanes on the freeway while using a cell phone. Some bother to at least look over their shoulder to see if anyone's in their intended land and some other's don't. One nearly drove into the side of my car because they didn't look at all. I only avoided it because I have a loud horn and a long finger (if you get my meaning). But those people make me crazy on the freeway.

Good Lord- sometimes I only use one finger to steer. I guess you drive enough in this state-- I think I could do my commute with my eyes closed!

When I've thought about it honestly, I generally do not have two hands on the steering wheel, regardless.

As for the bluetooth, anybody know about brain cancer studies? Not that I have but it's just a thought.

I'll use the little earpiece with the cord thank you very much- that way I can restrict myself to aural sex!

Hey, it tastes great and is less filling! [sorry, I am in a mood tonight!]

Besides, when I was learning to drive it was customary to have a beer in one hand, be able to shift gears, smoke a doobie and possibly grab some titty, all at the same time! Can we go back to the stone ages....?

I was pleased to see the various responses. My first blue tooth I say "had a cavity" it was rotten! The part that went over the ear dug into the back of my ear and got tangled in my hair with the slighest wind it would fall out. Talk about a distraction!!

So, now I have a sleaker model doesnt hurt me and it stays in however, it does not have the best reception for the person on the other end. So, I let the other party know if they want to communicate while I am driving this is it. The cost of the best sound is now close to $100. (mine was 45.)

The first day the bill was in effect here I watched as officers were staring me down. I did not have my phone or blue tooth that day. I almost waved at one but decided he would find a reason to pull me over. There were SEVERAl cars pulled over that day. So, now the police were looking for the chatters, who is looking for the real criminals....?
Either way, I have something that works

Tell me, when I pull you over, what will your excuse be?

"Officer, I was calling 911 to report the idiot that almost hit me while talking on his cell phone"

I've had my bluetooth since March and still haven't used it once. I need a short & simple, step-by-step on how to set it up.

I wanna know who the heck named it a "bluetooth"? Wouldn't "blue-ear" be more appropriate?

"Please don't suggest I take this ridiculous law seriously when texting while driving is still legal. Talk to me when that is part of the law too. "

Sigh... I must reveal my age ... back in the stone age when I was learning to drive there was a law that required both hands on the steering wheel visible to any officer driving by ... 10pm and 2pm positions. Only exceptions were when sticking arm out the window to signal turn or changing gears. If that law still existed and was in force than we wouldn't need a whole bunch of new laws to accomplish the same goal.... "Keep your mind on your driving, keep your hands on the wheel, keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead. ..."

Now, I just spent a weekend driving round trip to Napa with a person who thought it appropriate to take the maps from me and try to read the mapquest maps and instruction while driving 80mph. I will never get in a car with her again. shudder. Driver drives, right seat navigates. sheeeeesh

Rather than getting more technology for your cellphone why not instead analyze the risk of trying to take your concentration off the driving task instead? The average person on the road isn't a talented enough driver for the speed he/she is attempting even without any distractions.

Women worry about guys being murderers but they're seven times more likely to be killed by an accident like a highway fatality. If people had rational fears they'd fear other people who drive while talking on the phone versus some date he/she fears will kill them in some premeditated way.

Bluetooth Day is a wake-up call. Other drivers are tired of driving near someone who's too distracted to pay attention. (Hang up and drive already.)

This has got to be one of the dumbest laws passed by our democrat legislature in a long time. Who thought this up....Jackie Goldberg???

To be clear....we have made it illegal to talk on the phone, because it is "dangerous" to do so. But, that doesn't make sense, considering"

You can still dial out on your phone
You can still talk on it, using the speakerphone feature
You can still talk on it, using a bluetooth (Big corporate America thanks you for the spike in sales)
You can still text while driving
You can IM while driving
You can surf the net while driving
You can email while driving
You can eat while driving
You can smoke while driving
You can argue with your spouse while driving ( you can..I cant)
You can argue with your kids while driving
You can search for music on your ipod while driving
You can search for and change CDs whild driving
You can change radio stations while driving

Ridiculous. We already had distractive driving laws that applied to cell phone usage, as well. Tell those idiots in Sacramento, all of whom will still use their cells with umpugnity, to pull their heads out.

There was never a law that said you had to have both hands on the wheel. How the hell would one shift gears in a car without an automatic transmission....especially back in the "stoneage"???? Ridiculous.

Even today, they could not make such a law. It may have been what the DMV wanted to see during a drive test, but law??

The point would be that if someone talking on the cellphone (without a handsfree device) gets into an accident it then more clearly becomes their fault from the standpoint of insurance claims.

The law also prohibits anyone under 18 from talking on a cellphone while driving, regardless of whether they have a handsfree device or not.

Q: Does the new “hands-free” law allow drivers 18 and over to text message while driving?
A: The law does not specifically prohibit that, but an officer can pull over and issue a citation to a driver of any age if, in the officer’s opinion, the driver was distracted and not operating the vehicle safely. Sending text messages while driving is unsafe at any speed and is strongly discouraged.

And Sen. Joe Simitian just introduced SB 28 that hopes to make illegal text-messaging-while-driving as well.

Yes. They had to circle around to update a brand new law, a week after its implementation. How silly.

Why not just enforce the laws we already had for distractive driving? So far, I have never gotten an intelligent answer to that very basic question.

Bottom line: More laws = more income for the state. It's the same thing with red light camera intersections. Cities and counties got sold a bill of goods but, the bottom line is that it's all about money. There have been at least a half dozen independent studies that show the very same thing - use of those cameras at street intersections INCREASE accident rates and don't DECREASE them as advertised...but the money they bring in is sure good for the state.

The prior post hit the nail on the head. Congrats!

If you can't raise taxes, pass a new law you can fine them for. Indeed.

Read the whole post. The exceptions were to signal lane changes (all cars didn't have turn signals yet) and to change gears. They were listed in the post. It was CA law when I learned to drive in the 60's
