Posted: 7/4/2008 7:58:44 AM | God I'm pissed - Saying most enlisted personnel 'dont wanna be there anyway' and that our Armed Forces is comprised mostly of 'kids from lower income families', is like saying all banks are ran by pompous, big-nosed Jews.
Both are sterotypes perpertrated by ignorant and bias persons. | |

But when I was taking classes at our Community College I use to see them all the time hanging around on campus. They always had booths and such set-up at any events we had too.

Sure........it only makes sense doesn't it? It's just okay to disenfranchise the entire middle class and then 'recruit' them into the military when they don't have access to college. Thank god the Dems preserved access to college benefits for the troops in the last bill passed and yes, Bush absolutely wanted those benefits quashed.
Get 'em down........keep 'em down.......provided they survive of course. Yeah that's some real honor and integrity right there.....

Posted: 7/4/2008 8:51:07 AM | frankster p, yes, they do target schools. There is a MANDATORY aptitude test that high school kids take to determine fitness for service. That is followed up by TELEPHONE CALLS to the kids homes where they try to CONVINCE AND PURSUADE kids to join up.
My daughter got this treatment. Even when she told them she was headed to college, they interrogated her with, "are you SURE thats really what you want?", "how are you paying for it?", etc. and tried to dissuade her.
If there are no plans for college, they kid is game on the hoof. Obviously, kids with the right scores and no college plans are good prospects and most likely lower income.
My daughter was in another state with her mom at the time and I learned about it later, but I would have protested to the schools. Schools, of course, get federal money, though, so...........blah, blah, blah. | |

You clearly didn't read any of the above posts. USMC recruitment is up 140%, they've already met their quota till 2010, and the Marines DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, offer the large cash bonuses that the Army does, this insures that the only people present WANT to be there. And the Marine Corp is almost 300k, thats 300k men and women who enlisted without any monetary incentives.

Iran can hang a 16yr old girl from a construction crane for having sex out of marriage, sentence a 18yr old girl to death for killing 1 of the 3 men raping her, but all ya'll do is b*tch about your $4 a gallon gas, how Bush was wrong, and how the big-bad recruiter was outside your daughters school.
Ya know, alot of what the Hezbollah, Hamas, Al Qaeda groups say about America is true: this nation is full of a bunch of godless gluttons unwilling to make sacrifices.

Marines: $0
Army: $40k
Airforce: $15-30k
Navy: Idk
Coastguard: Idk
So I suppose your right in the sense that they use 'persuasion' for the other branches - but when I asked my recruiter why the Marines didn't offer enlistment bonuses his words were: "Because we don't want momma's problem."

I served in the Army 1969-72, Signal Corps and came out an E-5. That was at the tail end of Viet Nam and I can assure you that that conflict, paid for by a lot of blood on both sides, did not bring me or you or anyone in America any freedom. In my opinion, WWII was justified and probably prevented our freedoms being impinged upon ultimately in time by the Nazis nd Japanese, but I attribute most of my freedoms to the people INSIDE America who fought for labor laws and civil rights as well as in science and medicine. MOST of our military adventures have been for imperialism and expansion and empire-building, run by the capitalists in Washington, D.C.
And no, I dont want MANDATORY TESTING of my kid in high school to see if she is "fit" for military service and NO, I dont want her to be called repeatedly at home by grown men at recruiting stations trying to STIR UP DOUBTS within her about college plans. We know where the recruiting station is, we can find it, we DONT NEED THE RECRUITING STATION TO FIND US, thank you.
And as far as Iran goes, sonny boy, there are plenty of ***holes and injustices to go around in this world, I have no doubt. Islamic law has its excesses and the stories of those girls is heartbreaking ....but our justice system, even with all the protections we have here afforded us, we screw up, too. It doesnt mean we need to be invaded, nor Iran.
So, yah, I dont like $4 gas, I dont like Bush and seeing my country was led into a stupid war based on being deceived by our own government and no, I dont like my daughter being tested for the military and called by recruiters who dont take no for an answer.......... I spent some 5 hours in the Irving office 2 days ago ~ conducting my professional affairs, ~ Had the opportunity to be a combat vet/ mouse in the pocket / air-conditioning man ~ so to speak.
Ladies and Gentlemen ~ I was not impressed at all. ~ With the young soldiers in charge and runing the place much less the skraggy looking bunch of young men that was showing up. These poor kids ~ evidently, Mom had ran them out of the house and their options were few. ~ Kids hadn't even been in the sun ~ white as a ghost ~ delicate looking bunch of boys.
If this is any indication of what happening nation wide ~ I feel sory for drill sargents, and I never thought there come a day ~ that I'd say that.

Ditto for me but when I got to Texas, I learned all about discrimination for the first time. Quite an eye opener. Four of us went to a theatre in some small town outside the base. One of my buddies with me was black. The four of us line up to buy tickets for a movie. My black friend was ahead of me. When he gets to the window to buy his ticket (and we were all in uniform) the gal inside the ticket kiosk says "I'm sorry. No blacks here". I couldn't believe what I was hearing (this was in '60). So I told her "yes you are sorry. You're the sorriest sonnofa**** I've ever seen or heard of". We all left the line and went elsewhere. Sick bigotted **stards. And to think we all joined up ("RA") to protect her right to be a bigot. Gotta love it. | |

The DOD budget is eyepopping and there's no control over what they spend. We have so many security lapses in THIS country it's ridiculous. Unsecured borders, ininspected cargo coming in every day and what do we do? We make sure gray haired old ladies don't carry perfume bottles on commercial flights. What a goddamned joke. Are you laughing yet? When are we going to learn to mind our own damned national business and worry more about protecting THIS country instead of fantasizing about what every other "evil" nation might or might not do? We're not facing conventional warfare any more (state armies against state armies). Didn't you get the memo? Bush has crammed it down your throats for over 7 years now. It's TERRORISTS. The bad guys in this NEW kind of war don't wear uniforms, get it?
One nuke in an un-inspected cargo container and we're dead meat. Let's keep our eye on the ball, shall we? That's what Obama wants to do. We don't NEED a gazillion boots on the ground to enable us to fight ten war theatres at once. That's idiocy. We need to worry about protecting US. We're not doing that. McCain just doesn't get that. On September 10th, 2001, Rumsfailed held a press conference at the Pentagon where he discussed the need for tighter controls on spending. He mentioned that there were trillions in unaccounted for defense spending that had accumulated over the years. The next day, that all went out the window.
Given the rapid growth in the debt, the impact of that expansion of the debt on the value of the US dollar and the impact of the weak dollar on oil prices, this is a serious problem. | |

Majority of the young men joining come from military families and working/middle class back grounds. Many were in the Jr. ROTC. That is why they keep saying we do not have enough troops. Majority are white males.
My son enlisted (on his own) while attending a university and living in the dorms and everything had been paid for (by his family). So, it is not income. He always wanted to be a police officer since he was able to talk. His major was criminal justice. He is currently in Iraq and truly wants to re-enlist. My father was in the Air Force.
But, on this subject McCain reminds me of a War Lord. | |
