| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 8/17/2008 1:54:48 PM | I have 12 days to get everything organized and I STILL have too much stuff! I have had an epiphany! I really am only taking what is fitting into my tiny versa. The only amusing thing is - apparently beggers CAN be choosers! The dumpster divers in my back alley haven't taken half my crap. (good items like books, clothes, some furniture in OK condition).
And because of where I live (right downtown Vancouver near Stanley Park) charitable organizations like Big Brother or Canadian Diabetes will NOT come down town to pick up my stuff - allegedly the roads are too narrow for their trucks. I can only assume that the drivers are just too timid of downtown traffic as the roads are no narrower in the West End than they are in Kitsilano or West Vancouver.
Sooo...because I really and truly am arriving with no furniture - can anyone recommend a good place to buy some home furniture ? I am NOT talking about Ikea or The Brick - I actually want my stuff to LAST and be of good quality and don't mind forking over the extra $$$ for that.

Advice from a friend when I mentioned that I needed to buy a dresser, I'm heading there this week.

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 8/17/2008 2:12:59 PM | Best of luck on your move! Sorry didn't read all the posts so you might have stuff that's already been posted.
Have you checked out EQ3, Urban Barn or Revolve Furnishings? They're a bit more expensive, but since you don't mind forking over the extra $$$ I would suggest those 2 places as a start. I personally would recommend checking out Revolve Furnishings first.
If you want some really expensive stuff, you can check out the few blocks on 11th Ave and 7th Street SW, there's a flew blocks in that area that has a lot of nice furniture.
Robert Sweep Inc. on 11th Ave and 7th Street has very nice furniture if you like the contemporary style. Just to gauge the prices, a sectional will start at about 10,000 at Robert Sweep.

.... can anyone recommend a good place to buy some home furniture ? I am NOT talking about Ikea or The Brick - I actually want my stuff to LAST and be of good quality ... Some of that type of stores just recently closed down, due to lack of business!! United Furniture Wharehouse is a subsidiary of the Brick, so stay clear from there. Lots of places to look, depending on the quality you are after, if you have the time, there are several stores along 9th Ave. S.E that have some unique on off's, (pricy antiques), but fun to look through there. Come for brunch on tSept 7th at Kane's, and then you can stroll the area. Deerfoot Meadows has a few high end stores, but quality is not that great for the most part. Near there is Leon's and a few other furniture stores north of the Meadows and south of Leon's. Always willing to window shop, if you need a trailer, can get one quick, just need some muscle to go with it!!

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 8/17/2008 11:00:19 PM | Thanks guys! I'm not looking at spending 10K for a sectional - about 3/4 of that to furnish my entire living room including furniture and electronics (I do like my toys)
I would prefer a place that delivers as I will be working from home for the first 3 weeks and it would be easier to receive a delivery than for me to go and pick things up. Especially since I think I'll be doing some painting and small renovations to make the office workable.
I am looking forward to actually starting this adventure...I waffle between feeling overwhelmed with tasks to complete and just hoping they would magically take care of themselves so I can finally GO!

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 8/22/2008 8:25:55 AM | One week today until my Big Departure from Vancouver. I am still surrounded by boxes and things that need to go to the Salvation Army - this feels like the longest move in history!
More questions for you guys! I'm going to be living near Marda Loop and I need to join a gym. Can anyone recommend one? I'm not looking to pay over $50/mo for my membership and I don't mind CoEd Gyms.
Thanks in advance! | |

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 8/22/2008 8:50:18 AM | There is this place: Kaldi House Fitness & Lifestyle Studios #18, 11625 Elbow Dr SW "Small, friendly fitness facility nestled in the neighbourhood of Canyon Meadows. We offer a full compliment of yoga, Dance for Fitness; personal training and much, much more. We believe fitness needs to be fun to be effective."
Also you would not be too far from the Talisman Center, where you can align a membership to your needs
Some of the City Pools have gyms, and classes, so you could check out calgary.ca/City Living/Recreation and Liesure to see if they may have what you are looking for. The Southland Liesure Center is the largest that would be close to your residence.
But once here, a few familiarization drives around town, you may find a small venue that is close to your residence (like Probodies Gym at 2123-33rd Avenue S.W.). There are probably several in the Loop area.
The best feature of your is new abode area is that you will be close to one of the best produce markets in town!! Over in the old barracks.

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 8/30/2008 5:18:17 PM | Fine city for sure!!
Once they figure out the flippin traffic lights!! ........... arrrrrgh.
Passed through Calgary en route to B.C. this week cost us 35 minutes on HWY 1.
The city absolutely HAS to figure out the traffic light system.... pronto. It's a nighmare going through the city, and tourists end up missing the views because of it. (and will likely end up going different routes to avoid Calgary all together!!) .... hence losing tourism money....
Red at every single light (I'm NOT exagerrating)......... everytime. Annoying and time consuming for travellers.
It is STILL a fine city...... FOR SURE.

I hear you on that one, I hate driving on 16th Ave aka Highway 1 and Country Hills Blvd., I'll be glad when the construction is done. Mind you, we live in a city, so what do we expect eh....LOL....

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 9/3/2008 1:46:35 PM | No only do I have a map...but my iPhone has a GPS which has been FABULOUS. I've been driving around quite a bit and only got lost once! wee!
There is one thing I noticed about Calgary drivers...most of them seem to not have their left hand!! It's truely remarkable to me that there are SOOO many drivers who are either missing thier left hand or just can't move it at all! It must be the case right...otherwise WHY wouldn't they use their INDICATORS??
I now have trained myself to expect the car in front of me to go in any direction - straight, lane change, left turn or right turn without narry an indication that they are in fact going to do it. That is my only beef so far.
Speaking of beef - as a welcome to Calgary my friend made me Steak and Eggs for breakfast on Monday - fab-u-lous!
So I guess I'll see a lot of you at breakfast on Sunday?

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 9/3/2008 3:30:44 PM | It's a nighmare going through the city, and tourists end up missing the views because of it. Someone wrote that and someone else agreed to it.
Shouldn't they be paying attention to the road instead of gasping in awe at the views? Especially if they are tourists who are unfamiliar with the area, shouldn't they be paying attention? Especially in a city setting where drivers are a tad more agressive in their attempt to live life on a schedule or to be first in the car lines?

| Moving to Calgary...any advice? Posted: 9/3/2008 9:18:40 PM | I haven't been to breakfast for a couple of weeks.
Look forward to going on Sunday and meeting Alluria.
