| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/6/2008 5:18:07 PM | Some of the good ones I recall:
Oscar's Deli - On Main. Amazing corned beef sandwiches. The place had been around for a looong time. Been gone for quite a while I think.
Dionysis Restaurant (Nairn Ave) - Man, I loved this place as a kid! Corny Greek statue-decor with fountains and such. My parents used to take us there maybe 3 times a year. They used to serve the kids Grenadine-coloured ginger ale in a champagne glass with a cherry, so you thought you were really getting something grown up! Torn down in the early 90s I believe.
The Beachcomber (the original) - right by the Convention Centre. I still have a drink menu I "lifted" from there in the early 1980s. Again, corny Polynesian decor, but the c*cktails were exotic and fun to see. I think I did New Years there in 1988. Long gone now.
There was a neat little Carribean-inspired place on Corydon back around the mid 90s. Can't recall the name, but it was quite small, but had an amazing shark steak. It was gone after about 2 years.
Is the Wagon Wheel still open??
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/6/2008 6:41:14 PM | Yes Derby it's still open......... The Hamilton Tiger Cats still go and get their luved Club Sandwhiches when in town.....The Wagon Wheel Lunch is a hole in the wall just off Portage at 305 Hargrave going North..Pick up orders can be done as lunch it is packed........Real chunks of Turkey cooked that day, and Turkey gravey for your fries........It's best to spilt the club sandwhich and fries guarenteed you'll never finish one yourself...... | |
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/7/2008 5:08:32 AM | I'll second or 3rd that Mother Tuckers.
I'm going to add Soffia's Cafe on Corydon too (I think it's a french restraunt now). The canelloni and tira misu were sooooo yummy
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/7/2008 2:29:07 PM | | Number 4 for Mothers, I loved the decor, the wood was everywhere. Food was ok, service was great | |
|
| |
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/8/2008 5:09:41 PM | | My first thought was also the Creperie. AND the crepe st. jacque. I ordered the same thing every time. Miss that place big time. Ditto for Moskovitz & Moskovitz (sp?). Anyone remember M&M's? I suspect I'm dating myself with that one. :) | |
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/8/2008 7:41:38 PM | I miss Chi Chi's. Lots of cheese and Fried Ice Cream for dessert! | |
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/8/2008 9:26:43 PM | 5th or 6th for Mothers - and I too miss the original Beachcomber. And as for Chi-Chi's - I am with you on that !
Garbonzo's was fun in the 80's too - the one by the university.
I miss the burgers at Dallas Restaurant formerly on Main St as well. Although there are lots of those types of burger places around - for some reason that one holds some fond memories...

|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/9/2008 12:51:28 PM | Ok, I don't remember what the name of this pizza place was, but it was on Pembina near where Bishop Grandin is now..we took our kids there a few times for hockey parties when they were little, like 5 and 6. Anyway it seems to me it was in an old train caboose or something... I'm pretty sure they had tv screens up in at least part of the restaurant because we watched our little cuties on video, out there just skating their little hearts out trying to get the puck in the net....hahahahaha so damn cute..awwwww..opps I digress, anyhow they had really good pizza, I remember getting a seafood pizza there....well to die for or what!!! YUM....it did not have the traditional red sauce for a base. It had a white sauce, with shrimps, scallops, and crab I think. ANYWAY it was great!!!! I loved that pizza, I'm not the biggest fan of an oregano seasoned tomato based sauce....so understandably I am fussy about ma pizza! I have not seen a seafood pizza like that anywhere since...LOL
Does anyone ever remember having a seafood pizza on Pembina? hahahaha... Help me out here this has been driving me mad since I moved back here...LOL
How does the new Beachcomber compare to the old one?? I went to the old one for my 19th birthday...hehehe...wooo hoooo It was fantastic back then and expensive!
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/9/2008 2:43:09 PM | | mr. g. , been to h/h and pure, missed out on dark oclock.....are the rest any affiliation with the original ?..........i could do with a really big sandwich and a slice of his apple pie.........last i heard, back in biz..........reservations are months in advance | |
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/9/2008 3:50:48 PM | | Ahhh, the old beachcomber, many tasteful memories there, loved the decor, always wanted a jungle theme basement like that, with the stars on the ceiling, so cool! And yes back then, the prices where very high for what you got. They also had a great selection of drinks | |
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/9/2008 9:29:42 PM | Alot of restaurants go down hill and if you loved them before and had went back near there demise you would be happier they are gone.....Case in point was Nibbler's Nosh on Corydon.....It was a favorite of mine......however a month before it closed I ordered chicken wings and bit into one and it was RAW!!! I was literally sick!!
However, D'hstove was one that the family closed while it was still booming.....it was great surprise ...and I wonder whether anyone has found similar food anywhere else?

Tempt: However, D'hstove was one that the family closed while it was still booming.....it was great surprise ...and I wonder whether anyone has found similar food anywhere else? Similar food is a bit of a drive away... However, if that's what you're looking for, check out MJ's Cafe in Steinbach. Or there's always the Mennonite Heritage Museum which is also in Steinbach. Gotta love good old Mennonite home cooking!

| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/9/2008 9:46:52 PM | | gasthaus on portage has a great buffet thursday only | |
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/9/2008 10:49:42 PM | I would say the following:
Acropolis on sherbrook st for Greek food and healthy size portions.
Mandarin on Sargent which a better menu than Mandarin on River road.
Suzy-Q's on Portage near Berry which had the BEST milkshakes and burgers in a diner decor.
JJ MUDD in the Exchange district which had the world famous Bella Burger topped with sautéed mushrooms.
Crystal Bay Steakhouse on Waverly which had a great meal and a better price than the Keg.
Grand Garden in chinatown which had the best dim sum until they closed.
Oh my gosh....this is what happens to people like me who can't cook. We reminisce :)
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/9/2008 10:51:30 PM | Ah yes..M&M's . Some great times there with friends in the wee hours of the morning after the clubs closed. | |

|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/10/2008 1:15:59 PM | Ok I'm not sure of any of you will remember this...
Growing up in old St B, there was this little place called Duffy's Diner on Tache (north of Provencher). I remember as a kid going in there and getting THE BEST cinnamon buns ever.
I don't know what ever happened to that place...but the building is no longer there, nor are the other houses that were on that side of the street. Kind of like trying to picture Thomas Berry and Bertrand going all the way to Tache...
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/10/2008 2:11:46 PM | how about the paddock at polo park they had the best liver, bacon, and onions oops showing age here now lol | |
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/10/2008 3:50:34 PM | I never went to Duffy's, so I don't know about their cinnamon buns, but I do recall great cinnamon buns at the old Caesar's Palace that used to be in Polo Park. I also miss Swensen's Ice Cream that was located on Osborne.
I think this place was a bit before my time, but do any of you remember a place called the Canal of Venice? From what I have heard, it sounds like it was an interesting concept.
|
| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/11/2008 6:54:49 AM | Most definitely Bonanza. There is still one in Brandon and in most cities in Saskatchewan,so at least I can go to one when I travel west.
A cozy little Italian restaurant on Ellice called Mario's pizza.
The Burger Factory at Keewatin and Logan. Now I have to travel across the city to get to one.
Chi-Chi's,Ponderosa,Uncle Willy's were all good ones too.
|

| Lamented Restaurants Posted: 7/12/2008 7:01:19 PM | not sure about the canal of venice but the old fountain of trevi arlington and st mathews was pretty good. way back when i really enjoyed the fireplace on pembina. | |
