18 is your magic number.

Younger than 18= girl. older than 18=woman. the difference...the law. yes its that simple!

Now...I'm very new to POF and just began reading these forums today. My understanding of "Ask a man..." "Ask a woman..." is to help the opposite sex better understand each other. I'm not sure why people would respond negatively to a simple question by a woman who is looking for a simple answer.
I don't remember there being any questions or comments from the person who posted this question as to what is appropriate to call a woman/girl....just simply, does it mean anything different to men than it does to women????
This isn't a contest... it's an opportunity to learn how to communicate with each other.

Girls/Women thing is not about age its about maturity. I have a 22 yr old gf of a friend and she is most definately mature and a great woman. I also have an older sister thats 36 and still a girl. Same holds true with males.

I have a 22 yr old gf

This brings up an interesting point. Doesn't matter what your age how many people do you hear referring to a s/o as a woman/man friend (opposed to girl/boyfriend) If you don't use significant other, and they aren't a fiancè or more yet, how many still refer to them as girl/boyfriend? (Food for thought, not actually looking for any answers)

The terms have interchangeable meaning. An example of another word with 2 meanings is "so". It can mean very, as in "That building is so tall!", or it can mean because of, as in "They ran out of oarnge so I had to buy grape.". If their isn't enough context to be 100% sure how the word was meant, then I wouldn't make an assumption in either direction.

I like people. I think a girl over 20 is a woman.

I just like to chill with people.

Oh, careful there. That could sound demeaning

Of course I know what you really mean is your friend's woman friend...or is it lady friend...dam I'm confused now!

Adam Taylor's post hits the nail on the head for this one. Lots of men, I know plenty of them personally, haven't even considered this distinction and probably never will. I know guys who are perfectly repectable on a daily basis, with white collar jobs who like nothing better than to go on the pull for the weekend, looking for GIRLS and that's usually what they get, party girls, with about the same emotional maturity as themselves.

Some men, especially those who matured really early emotionally (in their mid to late teens) certainly see the distinction quite clearly and try from their early 20s to hook with a WOMAN, for a real adult relationship. But a lot of men will never reach this stage and will only ever see females in very traditional gender roles.

Once they go through all that puberty business, the words are all interchangeable.

I prefer the term woman or lady. Using the term girl sounds too much like a pedophile. Nowadays, one has to be specific.

We are basic creatures, we want to breed. Men will always find younger women more attractive and its probably to do with breeding potential. Also a younger women is less likely to already have children and will probably have less expectations from a partner. However, child bearing hips are also important, so most males will be interested in women, not girls, but young ones, so long as they are not complete kids with nothing interesting to talk about.
