| If you logged in tomorrow and found you had to pay

What the fundamental differences seem to be between paid and free sites is that on the paid sites, everyone wants to meet immediately! And they want to meet you at 1 am, in the parking lot at a Tim's, that very night. And in all likelihood, they don't even want to bother getting out of the car, but just fancy a "drive-by."
Free or paid, just a different set of issues. Here it seems, few people want to meet - some of those folks would put up all sorts of barriers to meeting. Many will try to engage you in one-sentence chat forever. There isn't the same incentive to meet if there is no financial limiter. If you have to pay a hefty monthly fee, you are more apt to try and get your money's worth by connecting face-to-face.
But no, I wouldn't pay. Not because I don't value the services and dedication of the programmer/owner or the Mods, but because I am at the stage in my life where it just doesn't really matter anymore.
