| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/8/2008 5:39:50 PM | In MY opinion... The greatest film score of all time is Bernard Herrmann's score for the 1076 film OBSESSION. Others I consider "the best": Rudy - Jerry Goldsmith The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - Bernard Herrmann Jaw 2 - John Williams Close Encounters of the Third Kind - John Williams Hoosiers - Jerry Goldsmith Cocoon - James Horner Cast Away - Alan Silvestri Forrest Gump - Alan Silvestri Logan's Run - Jerry Goldsmith Beneath the 12-Mile Reef - Bernard Herrmann Alien - Jerry Goldsmith
...to name a few of MY favorites!

| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/8/2008 7:06:20 PM | | Don't know if I think this one's the best one or not but I remember being stone broke for a wee while down in the maritimes in the early 80's and working out in my little flat since i could afford little else to do at the time but workout. I'd stack up a couple of albums and end the workout with my roommates album from Chariots of Fire. Good album. | |

| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/9/2008 6:27:24 AM | Some great ones on here, most of mine have already been covered but if you haven't, you MUST check out these ones:
Black Snake Moan The Crow Romeo & Juliet (new version) The Lost Highway The Matrix
A friend in the room just mentioned that the Spawn soundtrack is pretty good too...
I have to agree with a poster a few comments back about the obvious and common use of music on the Forrest Gump soundtrack, you could almost predict what was going to come next, it was totally over saturated with contrived meaning, meh.

| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/9/2008 12:41:29 PM | well it depends on what u mean by soundtrack. if your talking about the background music themes composed for a movie wich doesnt mean songs by popular singers a few comes to mind.
titanic is a good soundtrack that captures well the feel of the movie.im not talking about the celine dion song there.im talking about the music by james horner.the irish instruments and stuff. the soundtrack score for the first alien movie by jerry goldsmith is quite effective for the movie.its actually one of the things that makes the movie good.its very unique. the score for the action movie total recall by jerry goldsmith is quite underated.the sound of the score goes well with the violence in the movie.i know its a weird thing to say but its true. the first die hard movie had a terrific score by micheal kamen(who died).it was another thing that made this movie perfect. the rocky movies another great score by bill conti(who did also good work on the karate kid series) other movies comes to mind but...
|
| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/9/2008 1:58:54 PM | Bathurst.. You sound like my type of person! Kamen was only 55(I think) when he died a few years ago. And you're correct; ALIEN wouldn't have been NEARLY as scary if Goldsmith hadn't composed the score! FYI... the Intrada label released the COMPLETE score for the film, as it was intended to be used! Scott monkeyed with Goldsmith's score so much that it became nearly a jumbled mess. And Total Recall is yet another fine example of Goldsmith's genius! "End of a Dream" is just an incredible adrenaline-pumping piece of scoring!!
Oh... another score I consider to be "the best" is Goldsmith's score for The Wind and the Lion, which Intrada also released in it's complete form! And while you're talking about Horner, I'll also mention his delicate score for The Spitfire Grill... a prime example of what Horner CAN do, when he's not constantly plagiarizing other composer's work!

| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/11/2008 10:47:24 AM | Personally i prefer music rather than songs in a film, my favs are ROBIN AND MARION, THE ELEPHANT MAN, THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY,ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. all have neck tingling music. | |

| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/11/2008 12:00:29 PM | WOW! I NEVER expected ANYone to mention Barry's beautiful score for Robin and Marion! BTW... the Silva label rerecorded this score a few years ago, and I think it's still readily available. Wonderful music! I'll also recommend Barry's score for The Lion in Winter... HIS best score! | |
|
| Best Movie Soundtrack Posted: 7/11/2008 5:00:33 PM | | John Williams is the soundtrack king. My favorite would be Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. I also have CDs for many of the '90s Disney films, the best being Lion King. And I have to give props to Weird Al's soundtrack to UHF. | |
