| How many of you have been tested for STDs?
Posted: 7/8/2008 10:14:59 PM | I go in about once a year, or when it seems likely I'll be involved with someone - It just gives me peace of mind. As for if she does or not - it could be foolish, but I'm willing to take her word for it - but then again, I'm picky with who I would be close to, so trust wouldent be an issue.
And even the it's not a 100% safety garuntee, I put trust in the major condom brands, hell you cant really get safer then that, other then simply not having sex. | |

Posted: 7/8/2008 11:56:34 PM | I get routinely tested for STD's; specifically, the really nasty stuff: AIDS, HIV, hepatitis, etc. But my testing is because of my job, and the blood-borne exposures I've had over the years. The good part is that I come out squeaky clean each time. Your idea, though, of having a date at the local free-clinic sounds a tad unromantic. I'm sure it could be livened up by bringing a Starbucks latte with you and splitting a croissant, but not the way I want to spend an exciting day in the city.
Eventually, everything comes down to trust and commitment. I want you, only you, and have such deep feelings for you that I will be with only you, forever and ever, amen. We get tested. I look immaculate. Now, in a month, you get a raging case of the clap. The point is, if it's diseases you want to avoid, celebacy looks pretty inviting. If it's sex and love, it's a loaded pistol any way you look at it. I don't know if it's luck , good selection process, or a guardian angel; I've never contracted a disease from having sex. | |

She also recommends condoms forever, even in a monogamous relationship because of the risk of cheating. Life's a risk and so is love. At some point, you have to trust. Once a couple has been tested and agrees to mutual monogamy, perhaps the extend-a-deal should be , "if you cheat, you'd better protect me by using a condom with your outside lover". | |

Condoms are required in a relationship too.... sorry... I may trust you... but since I haven't seen anyone able to be monogamous in years... condoms will be worn.. because even if he uses one when he cheats.... he can still bring home herpes or hpv.... so there will be no secondary deal of if you cheat.... I will live in the world that protects me... to the best of my ability... and if he doesn't cheat.... that is amazing.... | |

It is important to get checked, esp. if you're bi-sexual (which I am) or if you've had any unprotected sex. If you get any signs of something, you should definitely get checked. | |

You only need to worry if, while you are getting the exam, you feel two hands on your shoulders...

a. HIV1, HIV2...the latter is the African strain
b. Hepatitis C
c. Hepatitis B
d. Hep D, E but are more associated with blood products
e. Chlamydia
f. Papilloma virus - can cause cervical cancer
g. Herpes Simplex
f. Molluscum Contagiosum - can be contracted by touch, only found in equatorial Americas
g. Granuloma Inguinale
h. Gonnorrhea
i. Syphillis
The following disorders can be contracted due to sexual activity;
a. mononucleosis
b. vaginal candidiasis
c. bacterial vaginitis
d. mycoplasma
e. staph A skin infections
f. ringworm
g. peduculosis: the crabs
h. scabies

Posted: 7/10/2008 3:17:16 AM | Yes, I've been tested and continue to do so. As long as you are having sex you should be-even with a long term partner. As one poster mentioned-trusting your mate is wonderful-but it's the things he or she neglects to tell you which can affect your body down the road. Yes, I've had sex without a condom-yes that is taking a risk-but as another poster mentioned-life is full of risks, but if I'm with someone I love-and see long term-it's a CHOICE I make, but I also get tested regularly plus have my annual ob/gyn appts.
There are routine STD exams-but if you feel you've been exposed to something above and beyond that you NEED to tell your doctor so you can be FULLY tested. Everyone should be proactive when it comes to their bodies-not wait til there is an ISSUE. If anyone whose sexually active has never been tested that's insane-and if any of those folks have read this thread get tested. I don't care how scared you might be-an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As my wise ol ob/gyn said 'just remember for each person you have any intimate contact with-you are also 'sleeping' with every person that person slept with too.'
Depending on the amount of sexual partners you've had or not-getting tested every six months is smart or at the very least once a year. | |

I am responsible for my choices in life and as such, I have to take responsibility for those choices. I need to know, if I have a problem, as I do not wish to spread that problem to anyone else. Not to mention the fact, that if I did have an issue, I would want to know ASAP, such that I could begin treatment. | |

Posted: 7/11/2008 10:26:45 PM | | i just got tested a couple weeks ago. it wasn't to have sex with a guy but it was for my personal knowledge. it's scary and weird but it's something everyone needs to know for safety. it also comes in handy when you do get intimate with a new person. you'll know where you stand and all you have to do is find out about him. i also think that you can get retested with him so he doesn't have to do it alone. everyone isn't comfortable enough to get it done by themselves even though it shows you care about yourself and your partner.
besides, if you're both tested then it allows you to have a little careless passionate condomless fun, that is if you both tested negative for everything. | |

Posted: 7/12/2008 5:58:59 AM | i was having this conversation with a bunch of my male friends a few weeks ago and was shocked to find out that none of them had ever been for a test and had no intention of going in fairness in ireland the test costs 120euros if you are not a gay man and you are not one of the first 40 people to make it to the free clinic at 8 in the morning on a tuesday .
but when i said that i go bi- annually and have done for years they acted like i was this infection ridden whore but i know i am clean
their attitude was that what they dont know cant hurt them and only the only people with STI's are people who hang out in fetish clubs or go dogging every night
the only people i know who go a couple of times a year are my gay friends the reason for this i believe is because its openly talked about on the gay scene where as straight people still have a stigma attached to it and to get tested is like attmitting that you are permiscuous and that you may have something | |

One man one woman as it was at first. The only thing wrong with it is what if the partner is lieing? I have seen police reports of people attempting to pay for sex 1/3 of the men who caught trying for gog 4 pay had wives. Keep it covered and play fair. | |

he can still bring home herpes or hpv...
anything, really.
If oral is given, there's a chance something can be spread orally, even via dirty hands.

At the Health Dept I went to ,you can get the results back in as little as 45 minutes . Besides ,it is a great way to get what I call my " go forth in sin " package for free . The price of condoms has increased ,like everything else these days , so if I can snag a couple dozen condoms for free , it's all good . | |
