| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 9:49:00 AM | In a village on the outskirts of Fareham which is roughly half way between Southampton and Portsmouth, so good for getting somewhere with things to do.
Great village, all amenities you could ask for, great schools, walking distance to the beach. Only thing is its full of old people, a large proportion of the population are retired!

Looks a bit boring from a distance but when you get close, interesting things start appearing...........................

| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 10:07:52 AM | I am from Nottinghamshire originally, have also lived in and hated Dublin and Leeds...lived in and loved London, Norfolk and Winchester. Southampton was alright.
Now live in a small village in Sussex- utterly fabulous 25m to the beach, great local organic farm shops and butcher, and all the other little shops you need, fantastic traditional local pubs, local countryside is fantastic, interesting cities towns and places to visit nearby- a complete absence of chavy types...The downside- I will let you know when I work it out.

| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 10:13:30 AM | Where are you from and what do you like and dislike about the place you live?
Im in A little Place just outside Bournemouth, (have lived here on n off all my life) I live 2 min walk from the New Forest, (Starts at the end of my road!) its beautiful here down this end of the world, even in the rain. But the summer is awesome.
The only disadvantage of living here, is we never actually get a chance to go to the Forest or the beach in the summer, because all the Grockles get there first!!

| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 10:24:10 AM | I'm from Brum. There's some brilliant nightlife and restaurants here, good places to shop and it's relatively easy to get anywhere being a central location with good road and rail links.
There are also some great places to go literally right outside the city. For example the Black Country has some great pubs and live entertainment. Drayton Manor, Alton Towers and The West Midlands Safari Park are all nearby.
On the downside, some of the inner-city suburbs are little better than slums, but I suppose you get that in any large city. I know a lot of fellow Brummies will probably disagree with me here, but I really hate the appearance of the new Selfridges in the city centre. To me it looks like something from a misguided 1980's idea of what a future moonbase would look like.

| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 11:09:30 AM | I am rootless, so my life theme song is .... wherever I lay my hat thats my home.
Unfortunately, my hat has landed in Southampton. I have given it 8 years with a 4 year break in Weymouth... my job transferred me back here. No offense to people who like Soton. I hate it here, I have been planted in the wrong soil.
I am prepared to sell my flat, give up my job (well paid and stable), and start again in Swindon. I have great friends there who are more important to me than any material things.
But after that move.... who knows? (Has image of my hat floating in the breeze).

| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 11:24:46 AM | Born raised just out side of the City of Durham. Beautiful and I still miss it as we moved to Washington on the outskirts of Sunderland when I was 15. There I stayed for the next 30 years, watching the chavs I'd made friends with grow and train their young chavs in all the skills of work avoidance and benefit fraud that they had and even learning new ones along the way. I occasionally visit family and friends and otherwise would never return to the god-forsaken place. As a camper I've travelled a lot of the UK and seen few places I would like to live. :)
**Edit: On quick reflection, I think wherever I end up (just sold my Washington flat) it will not be a choice of 'what' is there but 'who' is there. For me the people define a place as much as what's there.

| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 11:54:37 AM | Where are you from??? Er… I’m from my Mum ‘n’ Dad…. Well they tell me that I’m theirs but I’m not too sure… I distinctly remember them telling me that the gypsies left me on the step so quite possibly I am from the gypsies…
Then again my Aunt told my younger Cousins that the gypsies left them on the step also so maybe the Cheshire gypsies leave children rather than stealing them as the rest of the country seems to think…
Hmm got me to thinking now!!! Maybe I should have it out with my parents once and for all and ask them where babies do come from and why do the gypsies seem to have sooooo many that they feel the need to give them away…..
Maybe they are like Robin Hood!!! Taking babies from some to give to others!

WTF IS A Grockle??
A holidaymaker, or one from out of town. Particularly used in the South of England, generally as a mildly derogatory term. In other words..... pain in the ass holiday makers !!!!

| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 12:16:03 PM | In Cornwall we call them Emmets, the cornish word for ant, as that's how they come down the roads.
I don't live there any more, I'm in the Ashford that's near Heathrow.
|
| Where are you from Posted: 7/9/2008 12:21:30 PM | Yep, it's a term especially used in Devon, where I'm from. It's sometimes affectionate, sometimes an insult, depending on what sort of grockle we're talking about. Some grockles are fine and some are obnoxious, simple as that.
I've been around to all manner of different places around this country and abroad, but I can't really imagine not living somewhere in my beloved West Country. That's not to say I haven't seen some lovely places, but I'm a West Country bloke at heart.
