beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. however, physical attractiveness is biological. it's the reason why a movie with brad pitt and angelina jolie will probably be seen by more people than a movie with rob schneider and judy densch. | |

Posted: 8/8/2008 9:50:14 AM | Didn't want to start a new thread (actually, Did want to, but figured this has been discussed); this is a scientific look at what we deal with and are affected by in this culture, leading to dissatisfaction w/ our relationships or frustration w/ potential relationships. It's the "contrast effect". We're bombarded by images of perfect women on tv, in advertising, everywhere we go, the ideal of a woman, usually young, excellently proportioned, maybe airbrushed or surgically altered. Regardless of our commitment to objectivity & a realistic outlook, we are affected on a subconscious level. Men want more, women try to present themselves as more or are self-conscious & unhappy w/ what they have to offer. The story is worth reading, for a sociological perspective but, more importantly, for personal insight. It's in Psychology Today: "Why I Hate Beauty", written by a fellow who lives w/ it daily in LA & has discovered what being surrounded by exceptionally beautiful women has done to his ability to make relationships.

Physical attraction is a biological thing. You cannot stop it or turn it off anymore than you can make the wind stop blowing. So, please people , if anything, practice good grooming habits. I know people who take better care of their dogs than they do themselves. Wtf? Have some pride in yourself. Alot of this can be done at home on the cheap side. If you don't know what to do, ask a very close friend or a sister maybe. I'm sure somebody would be glad to help you. Have someone go with you to help you pick out some decent clothes and shoes. Good grooming stats at home. And not all those Hollywood stars are that beautiful when the makeup comes off behind closed doors. Remember that. If you wanna be a star, then act the part. Live it, breathe it, just do it. | |

I don't care about social norms or what other people think. If I find you attractive and you are an important part of my life.........then that's all that matters!
I've discovered that the most beautiful people that I've known.....usually tend to think otherwise about themselves.
Also, what society deems to be beautiful.......can be the ugliest bytches on the planet, if mixed with a bad personality!

I could not have said it better if I tried. I have searched for this forever-
how to put it into words and this is it.

I had this lady in the church who seems to never see anything bad in me. Just last Monday night she told me, you know, you are beautiful. And I said huh? She said, you look like a doll. Holy Moses, and she was wearing her glasses! Can you believe that? Then she gave me a kiss. She made my day but I knew she must be needing a new prescription.  I bet if she did not like me, she would never say anything nice to me.
And I have observed it a few times. Some men usually say something nice and you wonder what their motivation is.
So, I agree with curlygrl.

You can do whatever you want to do, and being confident is the most beautiful thing that people will see. Being a beauty pageant judge and coach for many years, this is the most important thing that I can stress to a contestant, it does not matter how beautiful the outside is, its the confidence and self esteem that you project that wins. This is true in real life, and might I add, your ex is not worthy of you, you are made for greater things then this fool! | |

Posted: 9/27/2008 1:57:00 PM | I had the fortune at a young age in life to see and know many beautiful people ... as well as the opportunity to see what ugly really is ... one young lady had a severe case of acne and her last name was Wolf so you know what kind of grief she got on a daily basis ... I was one of many though madly in love with her because she was so nice, so personable, so sweet ... an incredibly beautiful person ... who married her sweetheart and 30 something years later is still married to him (although she showed exactly what a steel magnolia is when we got her fiancee drunk on his bachelor party the night before the wedding and put him on a plane to San Francisco from Florida -- yes, we did get him back on time but we walked on eggshells around her for months afterwards  ) At this same time though, there was another woman we knew who was model beautiful ... physically perfect ... but was such a rotten spoiled person inside that it showed ... if you took the time to look ... the meanness in the smile, the look in the eyes ... and although she whined about the shallow guys she attracted, it was because no one else wanted to be with her and listen to her put people down and talk bad about other people ... all the "bad things -- selfishness, lack of care about other people, meanness, pettiness, argumentiveness, etcetera -- all show through the veneer of physical looks ... why they say beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes to the bone. Niceness, character, love are part of the "real" beauty of a person as well as the characteristics that enable us to see the beauty of others ... JMHO | |

Beauty is so subjective and only valid in so much as we deem one to be beautiful...
I never understood what anyone sees as so crazy appealing in Robert Redford or Brad Pitt for that matter..seriously, I don't.
Beauty is subject to cultural concept as well.. Mainstream culture once regarded full lips dark skin and curves as undesirable but now it' s all the rage, resulting in people clamoring to go under the knife to get those enhancements.. go figure
We all have our flaws ...to me beauty is a blend of what you see visually and the what you can't see ( what's inside that person) that spark they radiate, warmth,the sincerity.. the persona.. which can make or break a person really..
How many times have we seen a celeb or a non celeb who we are drawn to purely on visual appeal then when they open their mouths or show a crap attitude, suddenly their beauty and appeal fades and you see them totally in a negative way...thusly banished to the realm of "unattractiveness.." | |

What I don't understand is how humans are dense enough to believe that what you look like at 20 is the same you will look like at 60! Our society is pathetic and immature. So much for evolution of the species.
I know for me one of the most attractive attributes is intelligence. Those who don't see this as an attractive attribute are truly unfortunate. Why did you even bother to waste any time thinking about what this jerk said to you. You know exactly why he's your ex. | |
