I originally saw this mentioned in the biography of a famously clever, living American who also had problems with it.
I couldn't get it either, but I noted it and came back to it briefly every 6 months or so.
After a year or two, I got serious. I actually got out some dice and eventually realized the answer.

The cars headlamps don't work and the street lights are not on, its cloudy and raining, there isn't a full moon and suddenly a dog runs out into the road, the driver manages to brake just in time to avoid the dog.......how did the driver see the dog? | |
