Well, the original sentence was death. So, she's already gotten compassion and clemency really. After that they commuted it to life. I'm not a death penalty supporter, but I am a supporter of life sentences for the worst offenders, with life meaning.....well, Life. Not , Life....unless or until you ever become terminally ill behind bars at which point we'll just call it time served and release you to die in the comfort of your own family's home in the warm embrace of 'kith and kin'. No, because that is what is allowed to happen (ideally) for people who unfortunately become terminally ill but who have NOT taken part at any point in their lives in any gore-filled nights of massacre and mayhem.

When she brings her victims back to life then she could be considered for day parole...till then...she should work hard labour everyday at something which benefits the community and/or her victims families...at night she should write all her reasons for what she did, to those innocent people she slaughtered...end of subject.

She has recieved comapssion. I may have empathy, but that is all I could give. I would not want to be the kind of person and have lived the kind of life she have lived.

Her sentence was death, lessened to life.

The fact is she is still alive ,do you really believe that a very young lost impressionable woman can never be forgiven for crimes committed forty years ago whilst under the influence of a despotic cult leader.Have you grown as a person in that time.Someones daughter was taken away and turned into a killer by a charismatic drug addled lunartic . It is only natural to feel sadness regarding sharon tate and her unborn child, but after all this time it is wrong and inhuman to not show any compassion to this wretched tortured lady who is dying of cancer.

I concur, and implore people whom claim to be Christians to ask themselves, what Jesus would do?

Saint Paul when he was named Saul was a murder and a thief. He became the leader of the christian religion! The point of his story is that someone can totally change their life around from vileness and wretchedness to holiness. They cannot do so without forgiveness.... So it is your lack of compassion and, forgiveness that is the sin now.

I would love to see the blessed tears roll down her face when she felt the power of that forgiveness. Sadly our society has twisted the words of Jesus and often uses it to commit horrors on the world in his name. Tell me what will be greater crime in the eyes of Jesus? To twist his message of peace, forgiveness, compassion etc into one of war making? Or making a rather serious mistake as a young person and changing your life through service to others and asking for forgiveness?

To those of you whom support the death penalty... Let the first among you free of sin pull the switch.... <-- I modernized what Jesus had to say about the death penalty. (Let the first among you free of sin cast the first stone.)

Jesus also even forgave his own murderers!

PS in states that have the death penalty the murder rates are HIGHER than states that do not! The death penalty is not at all a deterrent, it is nothing more than sadistic form of foolish, barbaric, vengeance. Since, murder is wrong the state should not be murdering people. It is like beating your child telling them not to hit people. IDIOTIC!

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/deterrence-states-without-death-penalty-have-had-consistently-lower-murder-rates

To people whom wish upon this lady pain and suffering and speak of Karma I find that ironic... What Karma have you set up for yourself by doing this?!

May she find peace in the arms of her lord whom will forgive her for she has given herself to him.

Peace be with you.

Susan Atkins has brain cancer and is bedridden. I believe I read that she is now in the hospital ... not even really in prison. They have to pay someone just to guard her door and also, it occurs to me that her medical care costs a hell of lot more there than if she were getting a visit a couple times per day by a home health nurse.

She can't walk and she can't talk. She's almost dead. She doesn't need a prison. She needs a bed, a home health aid, a home health nurse, and if her family still loves her ... she needs her family.

Being a parent, I have to say that no matter what any child of mine would do, I'd still love that child. I might not be pleased about their behavior all the time, but I would not stop loving my child. Likewise, I love my siblings unconditionally.

While working in the jail, and taking care of my inmates, the only thing I ever thought about was that it was not my place to judge them. The court system had already done that.

interesting how someone's words come back to haunt them,....
Sharon Tate according to the Manson follower's begged for compassion not so much for herself but her unborn baby,....and was stabbed some more directly in the belly for her answer,....

and Susan,...wasn't she the one who also attempted to kill off the then sitting president Ford? I may be wrong but don't feel bothered to look it up right now,...so my bad if I am,...

[quote-Shes terminally ill. She made a mistake almost 40 years ago. Rage, anger and revenge solve nothing ]
Punishment of life without parole has absolutely nothing to do with revenge, and there are way too many multiple convicted murderers, rapists, armed robbers, and other violent offenders who had second and third and sometimes more way more victims because some morons think it's soooooooo harsh to keep repeat violent offenders in prison. Personally I think we've gone way to soft on repeat violent offenders and ones that commit horrific first acts, the punishment should fit the crime, not weight lifting, cable tv, internet.....

Compassion and mercy are, by their very nature, undeserved.
Susan Atkins is still here, still alive - tho' barely, I guess - and as such is not beyond the reach of those who can find it in their hearts to pity this creature. Pity is also, btw, undeserved.

To the extent she does not deserve it, I feel it for her.

If that makes me seem like a misguided, bleeding heart, well .. so be it. The past can't be changed, and I have the choice to wish her at least a peaceful meeting with the God she has said she believes in now. Who am I to say it's not true? We really don't know how diseased her mind was to begin with; that perhaps she doesn't display remorse in the way that is expected of her: what's that supposed to look like?

I read once, can't remember where ~ I keep trying to place it ~ that Susan reached a point of awareness of her crime and began to scream.. scream and not stop screaming. I wish I could find that. It's a significant reaction, tho' I think most people want her to constantly be crying and saying 'sorry' over and over. That simply may not be how she processes it.

I can't judge her. I'm so horrified by the crimes she committed with and for Manson, and I know the bereaved will never get over it, so I feel compelled to hate Susan, but I can't. Seriously ~ I can't judge.

first of all,...with all the revelation screaming,....
I have more pitty for the other inmates and marvel at their restraint,....

and if life without parole doesn't mean life without parole,..then why give it in the first place,.....which BTW Manson himself didn't get,....after his death sentance was overturned he got life WITH the possibility of parole,.....

Susan as the rest of her clan get a do over in the next life,...buut not this one,....

and remember the one clanswoman squeeky Lynnet from I believe, if memory serves,........she got a reduced sentence for testifying against her clan,...remember what she went on to do after she got out? well let me remind you,....she tried to assasinate the then President Ford,....she missed but who knows what some of her girlfriends might have done had they gotten out,....

and even if Susan isn't capable of any action,....as long as she can breath in and out she can talk and that's all Charles was commited of doing,....and he isn't going to get out either,....even though he has been up for parole at least 3 times so far as I remember,....

as for my compassion because she is dying,....sorry but we are all dying,....some of us know about how long we have,....but even for us,....tomorrow is prommised to no one,....

now if her being sorry could bring the dead back,....as long as she was reallllly sorrrry!
well that would be another story,....but until then,....I won't be loosing any sleep over the loss of Susan,.....

oh and BTW,...these people were already judged, so you don't have to worry yourself over the inability to judge them,......I just hope you never sit on jurry duty,.....because anyone who does has to know how to say guilty as well as,... not guilty,.....

marita_b,
I see where you're coming from, but I don't confuse guilt in this lifetime with guilt in the hereafter. Obviously she has to serve her time here, and if I were on the jury I would have no difficulty stating confidently I believe in her guilt.

It does not mean I have no compassion for her. The crimes she committed are what must be punished, but they can never be righted. I just don't see the point of choosing to have no heart for a person, no matter what they've done. I also happen to believe she turned her life over to Jesus, regardless of whoever may vehemently disagree the very notion of it: that God could accept a Susan Atkins, Ted Bundy, etc .. that's where I refuse to sit in judgement.

Susan Atkins might as well be on parole right now ... she's no longer in prison. She's in some sort of hospital somewhere. I think the last I heard ... they have now amputated a leg as well.

Sharon Tate's sister does not want her to get the parole ... but if you ask me, Susan might as well be on parole if she's no longer behind bars.

I have trouble with the whole idea of compassion,.....

If I were to be her nurse, I would give her as much care as anyone else, I would not inflict any extra pain because I could,.....I might not be tempted to stay and chatt with her if I didn't have a proceedure to perform on her ie; dressing change, or whatever,...
nor would I let her buzzer go off longer or take my time getting her pain meds,....but that to me isn't compassion,....it's my need to do my job the best way I know how,...

Since I don't have her as a patient,....I don't give her a second thought,....nor do I care when and if she dies,....lots of people die every day,...my compassion or at least what I think of as compassion, the "oh how sad feeling" that you get when you hear a villiage loaded up with father's day celebrators, was washed away in a typhoon,....

Those are the people who I feel compassion for the ones that suffer having done nothing to cause their fate,....and yes I know there could have been criminals who also suffered in the typhoon,...but if I don't know,...then I didn't know,.....

as for Bundy or Susan going to heaven simply because they regretted things,...which I still have my doubts about,.....then that's not a heaven I want anything to do with,....

sorry,...just doesn't fix everything,....it almost gives some people permission to do wrong because all they have to do is say sorry,.....not in my book,....

Now I myself have done wrong,...inadvertently mostly, ....after all I too was a child once,...but in those cases when I asked for forgiveness or said sorry,... I also then followed up with a way to atone, even if it was nothing more than to make changes in myself,.....

and punishment,....is not atonement,.....

Now you show me ways in which Susan has tried to atone for her crime,....
and then get back to me,....I might even reconsider my position,....

marita_b,
I'm wondering if it's the discrepancy in our ideologies that is the problem.

My sense of 'compassion' is not necessarily one of constantly feeling sad or pitying; it's an awareness that those without any chance of meriting sympathy are the most needy, and by its granting, that compassion is shown to be ultimately powerful since it can change even the most reprehensible and wretched creatures, including the likes of Atkins, Bundy, etc.

Also, I do not believe their conversion to faith consists of being sorry alone. Regret cannot atone for what they did. "Sorry" is just a word which, as you pointed out, means nothing and can give one the sense of faultlessness simply by saying it every time. I don't believe in apologizing for something if a person thinks they're likely to do it again: where's the remorse? It's a lack of self-control they hope to use 'sorry' against as some kind of karmic insurance.

I do understand that, if you were her nurse, you would certainly do your job and observe the Hippocratic Oath, but that it wouldn't be based on wishing she felt better. I know you don't feel she should have any comfort.

I don't believe her earthly comfort should be given any special consideration, but I do believe her conversion to Christ is genuine, and it's not because she's a better person.

It's not her own goodness that saved her: she HAS none!

It did NOT change Ted Bundy...he refused to name all his victims & where he buried them even when asked just prior to being led to the death chamber. He intentionally let families suffer. Death was too good for him, they should have tortured him until he gave up all information of what he had done, and to whom, until he was dead.

Much to be said for Drawing & Quartering...while medieval, it was quite effective.

We should go back to the simpler ways of our frontier days...hanging to follow sentencing within 48 hours...solves the whole recidivism thing completely...not to mention being a VERY good deterrent.
