| | Vets with scarsPage 3 of 3 (1, 2, 3) | i see. surrounded the past ten years by post trauma children from foster care, i guess i'm just used to it already! i have several friends with viet nam post trauma who helped me with my kids. their nightmares are well founded. most have supportive partners. then there are those of us w/o post trauma. where are our supportive partners? as gilda said when she was alive, if it's not one thing, it's another. so much easier to judge others, ain't it?
hang in there OP.

| Vets with scars Posted: 5/8/2010 1:53:36 AM | i once dated a vietnam vet... a great guy, but he'd "lose it" at the slightest provocation... i felt sorry for him because of what he'd witnessed during the war ... so excused him a few times for his oafish behaviour...
until i met an old buddy of his who told me he'd always been a "crazy, rude, f*cked up b*stard!"...

LOL YEA RIGHT. ALL THESE GALS DON'T HAVE PROBS WTH ANY PHYSICAL SCARES. BUT WHEN THEY ARE INSIDE SEE HOW QUICK THEY HEAD FOR THE HILLS.
My husband wasn't in war or anything but he did have an ex wife who was abusive and tried to kill him numerous times. Do you know how hard it is to gain the trust of a man who was so used to be hit, kicked, or even stabbed when he did the slightest thing wrong? My husband had some deep emotional/mental scars when we met and it was hard to get him to trust me. After we got married I was moving my stuff into our home and he dropped a salt shaker and it shattered. He kind of cowered down and said please don't be mad at me it was an accident. Even after we had dated for 3 years he was still scared that I'd hit him or something like his ex wife.

| Vets with scars Posted: 5/8/2010 10:33:10 PM | | I think the thread went a bit off track as the op was asking about physical scars. Again; no it wouldn't bother me as I too am a vet; don't have any major scars but did get bumped around. So, I woudn't turn my back on a fellow vet for some physical scars. I have dated several men with bad scars on their body and its always them that pull away from me. | |

| Vets with scars Posted: 5/8/2010 11:15:24 PM | Remember the movie Jaws from the 70s about the shark?
My favorite scene is when Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw get pissazz drunk and start comparing scars. It was humorous and full of pathos and just a great "guy" scene.
I don't think scars will matter much to anyone who has any depth.

| Vets with scars Posted: 5/9/2010 5:00:06 PM | Nope, not a problem. My dad has a large scar down the middle of his chest from where doctors put a valve by his heart a while before I was born (I think it was during the 80s, but am a bit vague on details since it's just the way it's always been for me). It's never been an issue for him, he came swimming with us when we were kids, and if it had been an issue for my mum, then I wouldn't be here, would I? | |

I agree scars can be really cool or once you know someone you don't see them.
Best scene other than "We need a bigger boat".Loved the song..LOL
I compare scars myself, but I used to like to exaggerate, OK fantasize..ALRIGHT LIE about how they got there.
Having a can of Tab from your purse on the handle bars of a ten speed fly into the front spokes making you dive head first into a rock/tar road taking hunks of flesh and meat off you just doesn't sound as cool as some things I have told over the years.
Lions, tigers and bears OH MY!!!

| Vets with scars Posted: 5/11/2010 11:08:30 AM | I get self-conscious once in a while in the summer-short wearing time. My right leg has a third degree burn scar from the ankle to upper thigh. Burns leave ugly marks.
I have a bullet scar near the corner of my left eye, and a knife scar on the back of my right hand. The right hand pinky doesn't work like it should anymore due to the knife being put through it. It can't extend all the way out.
Other then the leg, you have to really look to see the other scars.

| Vets with scars Posted: 5/11/2010 5:53:18 PM | I have a friend with 80% burns, and numerous scars from other incidents - some visible, some not. He's planning on moving in with his boyfriend this year. | |
