What's a FANNY PACK? Well, you could have suggested to go shopping for a designer man bag instead of dropping him like that, that was mean. Hope karma gets you.

I met a guy who wore wrinkled jeans... and not the trendy kind.. the kind that was shoved in a drawer or at the bottom of a dirty pile!! I didn't diss him or laugh, just made it our first and only meeting.

A fanny pack is just a little pack with belt loops. People usually use them nowadays if they want to supplement the capacity of their day pack if it's too small...
or something like that. Now and then you see people wearing them because they have some little items they like to carry around with them for whatever reason. Usually people wear them below the small of their back..on their "fanny" or on their side. They can vary in size quite a bit.

Okay, so you don't want to date a guy who wears a fanny pack - fine, but to make fun of him - not cool

That's a pretty teenage and insensitive thing to do

No way, perhaps it's a sign of another, more serious character flaw.

You were, perhaps, a tad shallow, but he was a bit humorless which is a much graver flaw in my eyes. A more delicate approach may have been to gift him with an "acceptable" substitute once/if the relationship had progressed.

Just to get you thinking ..

A fanny pack specially designed for this particular use is one of the best all around "everyday", "holsters" for your licensed concealed carry firearm .. ESPECIALLY summertime .. .. these days with all the states that have CCL you're going to see a LOT more fanny packs on men AND women. To me a fanny pack SCREAMS "concealed carry".

... peace, through superior firepower ..

those who beat their swords into plows will plow for those who don't ..

an armed person is a "citizen" .. an unarmed person is a "subject" ..

"assault" is a behavior, not a weapon ..

A damn fannypack?

Here in australia fanny means vagina so we call fannypacks "Bumbags" haha. And you don't wear them unless you are an asian vendor at a market stall.
Fanny packs=not cool!

Him with a pack named Fanny on the front of his belt. I'm not one to beat around the bush so I broached the subject. I asked him whether he had a special permit to carry one of those after 1993.

OP -- Are you kidding me? You're worked up over a fanny pack? Seriously? Try to bear in mind that unlike women, men don't have the luxury of carrying purses. If we are wearing pants with no pockets, how else would you like us to carry our valuables and such? A plastic handle bag? Maybe a ceramic vase?

Take away a woman's purse, and make sure she's in clothing that has no pockets...and then come back to us about the "evils" of fanny packs. Women would be wearing them like they're going outta style if it weren't for purses. So be smart. Men don't like wearin' fanny packs any more than anyone likes seeing them...but if you need to carry something and have limited or no pocket space, what else are we gonna use?

Be smart. Eesh.

PS -- Yes, I also wear one on occasion. Especially when I wear tear-aways or travelling (I hate pickpockets).

I've said this before in this thread, but I tend to agree that you should be able to wear whatever you like to carry that crap that you have.

If all I want to carry is a bottle of decongestants, my camera, a map, and a granola bar, why should I have to wear a backpack?

How many people would want to walk around in public while embarrassed by their partner? Not me!

What people find embarrassing varies greatly. Replace the fanny pack with a mohawk haircut or a nose ring with a chain that goes into a guy's crotch and see how that changes your perspectives.

You, are as right as rain girl. And, judging from your outstanding portrayal of this truly funny date - I would say you have EXACTLY the right outlook on this. In no way are you "superficial" . we are more than the sum of our parts and truth is, this thing he has as "who he is" is a little sad. But, to be honest. Your writing was just so superb it could have been on about any subject! You must write for New Yorker No? Great Post there OP! really funnny!!

Ha Ha a 'murse'. I'm sorry, no fanny packs here. Heck, my MOM won't even wear one of those anymore...my grandma likes them though...keeps everything handy and its all attached to you, so you don't even have to hold it! She's like 92 though...so she might be a bit behind the times fashion-wise...

... if I showed up to a date and the guy had a fanny pack. .... words would not describe... how completely wrong that is.
Or a murse for that matter. Briefcase, sidebag or even backpack would be more appropriate.

And you can bet that someone who likes to ridicule would find other things to laugh at about another as well

But I have no room to talk ~ I wouldn't like dating someone with a ring through his nose or lip ~ I guess guys like women with their breasts falling out but that's an embarrassment to me as well

The new bag for guys is the over-the-shoulder courier satchel...comes in a variety of sizes, but for everyday use can carry all the essentials, plus maybe a toothbrush and a clean pair of gitch for those overnighters. Very manly, and very practical, and not at all feminine like a man purse from the 90's. Men's accessories have finally hit the mark.

This one really made me laugh...must be getting late.

So...amusement parks, hiking, biking all appropriate. If your date involved any one of those activities I can see a fanny pack being ok, still kind of funny though. Assuming that he was dressed appropriatly for a "trendy" restaurant, not sure how the pack looks with a suit????? Anyway, I really have to take the OP's side on this one. She knows what she likes and if this was a fashion turn off so be it. It seems this guy has to have the perpetual fanny pack. Curious though, where the heck would you go shopping for one of those now. My 15 year old daughter reccomends AmVets they have great vintage stuff there.....

I would wear a fanny pack. Under one condition and one condition only.
If i was forced to wear a speedo and the only way to cover my armadillo was to wear a fanny pack over it

You made fun of the guy's fanny pack and he didn't see the humor in it? And various forum posters are bashing the Op for joking about it?

You folks really have to lighten up.

It would be one thing if she was teasing him about his nose, or some sort of birth defect, but we're talking about a FANNY PACK for crying out loud.

Unless of course it was to hide a colostomy or something. But there's no way the Op could know that unless it seemed to change size during the evening and he NEVER went to the bathroom. Even then you couldn't be sure but it would be good reason to be suspicious.

I have to admit that would be a real problem for me....a man who wears a fanny pack would have nothing in common with me. It's a deal breaker. Turns me right off. It would be equivalent of a handle bar moustache, white socks or a mullet.

please maybe most are not weapons minded but i see a fanny pack i see a gun holster.
I have a fanny pack that doubles as a holster for my glock 19. It's a great way to carry concealed when your out in sweats or pants that do not have a belt. Though i would not bring it on a date. That is where a pocket pistol or a inside the waist holster comes in very handy
Most look on and think oh mr 1982 but in the end you have means to get your self out of a situation (ie walking to your car at 11pm at night and getting molested by bad people) notice i did not say kill the bad guy. Self defence is not about kicking ass and taking names. It's about getting away to live another day.
I know some may find it outrageous to go armed on a date but in moorsville nc there was a man who was stabbed to death by a girl on a first date.
Reason.....he had 200 dollars on him and she was crack head.
Sorry to tread off the omg he is so out of style slant of this thread but at the end of the day he probably was carrying a concealed weapon. Though he should have chose a high ride strong side in the pants holster kydex or leather it doesn't matter. Much more fashion sensible.

You'd be the first lady from my generation that would do so. grin....though i do aggree with the mullet...i'd never date a girl with one. grin
