This is an interesting point, losing cultural and racial diversity world wide....However, it is not the issue of this thread and minimalizes the issue at hand, which is that in America, there is a high proportion of black women becoming infected with the Aids virus. It is a serious issue with which many are not aware. We should be aware, but what we can do about it is another issue. I don't know what we can do about it.... | |

doubt so, they have very high birth rate and they start their sexual activities in very young age.
i had been to africa (different countries) and every time i stayed there for at least few months. yes, aids is a big problem, in some areas, especially cities, almost 25% of people are hiv positive. one of biggest issues are too many sexual partners among youngsters, especially cities. in rural areas, the situations are relatively better. also they don't like use condoms.
also the money for fighting aids from the states and other countries are being wasted, because they don't pay the bills so they don't care... @ where i worked, free condoms were everywhere, not that anyone was encouraged for sexual activities in working places. it was more a superficial sign for the December 1st, aids day...
practically in africa, they got ideas that "go to americans or europeans for money if you want to fight aids or other deseases, go to chinese if you want to get infrastructures done, done quickly and cost less".

The title of this thread is really quite misleading.
First of all, women in general account for roughly one quarter of all AIDS cases in the US. Maybe my math is a little sketchy but shouldn't we be screaming from the rooftops for that other three quarters before proclaiming that the end is nigh for black women ?
Secondly, again, my math is a little sketchy I guess but if the US has a black population of roughly forty million people, isn't it a bit of an exaggeration to say that ten thousand of twenty million women are evidence that judgment day is coming up fast for those same women ?
By all means, concentrate the resources, get the message out, do all we can so that not one more women has to suffer this terrible syndrome. That being said, it's a little early to be screaming about the sky falling. I mean sure, if that actually helps to stop the spread of AIDS well okay, but that doesn't qualify the thread title. | |

we are not endangered,we are strong educated and (i am at least) not willing to accept this theory. the researchers should look again.....................

Posted: 8/31/2008 5:49:23 PM | CNN recently aired a documentary on "Black in America" . If you get a chance to see it you should. They covered it from the male and female perspectives as well as health. AIDs is an issue. I was truly saddened as these are beautiful young women with if not a great education - at least high school education - with access to condoms, etc. Poverty plays a role. Youth plays a role. The fact that black young men are often in jail where they contract AIDs plays a role.
That said, Black women are not an endangered species and to them I say - you go girl.
China: I have a brother and nephew living in China - no we are not asian. There are 20 million more men than women of marriagable age. It is changing their culture. Girls worry less about getting a boyfriend or being treated well as "it is easy to get another one". Family come up entire economic levels with arranged marriages so I guess there is a bit of "selling" still going on.
Great odds though if you are a women. | |

So, for women of color, it IS A SERIOUS PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM.
Oh, I understand that but that's not what this thread is ostensibly about. The thread title suggests that black women are on the verge of extinction. Well, no, that's really not in the cards.
This is an example of statistical manipulation. Somebody takes a fact and through omission (in this case) uses it to convey a message designed to support an agenda.
For example, this is something like saying that the murder rate in Bumblefudge, Arkansas has increased by 6000 gazillion percent in the last year because there was a homicide in the past year. Let's say Bumblefudge has a population of 100 and one person was murdered in 2007. Prior to that, there hadn't been a homicide recorded in twenty years. So, statistically speaking, Bumblefudge has a murder rate of 1000/100,000. This makes Bumblefudge exceptionally more dangerous than any war torn country one cares to mention. The average murder rate in my city is something like 3.5/100,000 as a point of comparison. Now, armed with a statistic like this, a smart local politician could go to the government and demand they lock the place down and deem it a disaster area. Well, that might work if the government was staffed by monkeys I guess but of course, it's not (even if it seems that way most of the time)
Another element that was omitted was that this is a fairly predictable circumstance.
To go from say, 5 to 10 cases of AIDS means an increase of %100 . Since AIDS isn't new exactly but is still spreading across the entire population , as each new sub-section or definable at-risk group is infected, the rates will rise dramatically for a few years (assuming something is done to curtail the spread) The general pattern in Westernized countries is an introduction period where nobody takes the risk seriously, followed by a dramatic increase in cases reported , and ultimately as taking precautions becomes more widespread among the population, a leveling-off of the rate of increase in cases reported. What this means is that in terms of the rate of increase of infection, we're probably already near the apex.
In any case, by no means am I downplaying the situation and urgency of it , or trying to suggest that this is no big deal. What I AM saying is that to cry from the rooftops that black women are in mortal danger as a collective is , uh , rather premature. Besides, if a quarter of the AIDS population in the US is female, aren't black men in considerably more danger if we assume that they also make up a disproportionate percentage of male cases ? | |

Posted: 8/31/2008 6:40:04 PM | | That's a very noble thing to do not many people are willing to do for their own much less cross lines.Im one that doesn't look at their color and have always tried to help the human race period,but some of that does have to start with their men ..A man is or should be involved in his community and ..What the country can do is stop handing out condoms in school saying its ok to have sex at 8 and to stop the drugs coming into this country so that dope guys can buy their bling bling that makes the economy go around so good since they dont mind spending 5000 on a set of rims that look ridiculous .the Government actually lets drugs come in for this reason and then it trickles down to the poorest and miss fortunate people and ruin their community and many lives in the process..thats why their having a high rate of HIV and AIDS..you can thank your corrupt cops and the GOVERNMENT for that and the ones in that community thats the sellers of the drugs ..they are willing to kill their own neighborhoods for profit..and its not white or black it human nature as bad as that may be to say ..and all are to blame for the selling and the bringing in of drugs..white and black ..and it all because of the GREEN...thats your problem in a nutshell in this country and all others..we need to get back to the basics and teach our children right and tear them butts up again and that will turn this mess around ..The bible says to spare the rod is to spoil the child..well there doing drugs killing other kids and getting HIV and Aids all before their 12..that didnt happen when we taught the bible in school and whip kids when they did wrong..does not take a genius to figure it all out | |

these numbers are not new, but be careful when you assess the findings. we are talking about african american "young" women. if you look at income stats, most babies being born into the usa, are to very very young women, lower income, uneducated. it depends upon the commitment to address this particular issue by "area". there are a number of african american health initiatives, often driven by larger public health departments, family planning agencies and last, but not least the african american nurses association. i might add, that a growing segment is the people my age who are now dating and acting out their loneliness as well. unfortunately budget cuts are affecting all programs of any health care solution and we still have no national health insurance!!!
my child is of mixed ethnicity, almost half african american. she was never raised in the traditional culture, although believe me i tried to take her to african american churches, etc. she was however, raised in south america and did not even "know" she was african american descent as that was not addressed in her family, nor by her birth father. mtv's representation of young "black" people really dragged down all my efforts (at that time) when i first got her at 13 years of age. she is now back from the streets, which she ran to at age 18 (thanks to mtv and her history combined). now she is having a baby and i am supporting this journey. she is 21 and back in college and sharing with me, much of what she observed. she is brilliant and i have no doubt, that the world will be hearing from her soon.
most of this about race is socio/economic and mob psychology watered down to what is deemed acceptable in society. eg letting neighborhoods be responsible for education and with the post world war two federal discrimination built into mortage laws, the aftermath of isolated poor african american neighborhoods who have to date been unable to finance education.
with racial isolation, lack of housing options until it was too late for most with the civil rights legislation, lack of good education due to neighborhood financing, welfare assistance to only single moms back then (forcing single parent families), the new sexual revolution and anti marriage trend amongst all young people, unclean needles and drugs introduced into the african american neighborhoods, etc etc. what does everyone expect???? also, ask yourself an honest question. how many of you have unprotected sex with the men/women you have loved? didn't you trust them? no need to answer publically.
you cannot address HIV in isolation. you need to get into isolated neighborhoods and start mentoring children and get them into the "white" world. a child i mentored a good fifiteen years ago, is now in banking. i got her mom some good political connections as well. she has since told me, i was kind of like her human shield. i never realized how terrified she was until afterwards. my kid's boyfrined only recently came out of his shell in the ghetto, constantly racially profiled as a kid who grew up on the streets and had childhood problems with the law. every time he starts college, they arrest him and hold him for weeks, then they have to let him go, because they have nothing on him. this is no way to create security and hope for kids. he told me to my shock, that he had only met and trusted two "white" people. that was me and my ex SO. oddly the latter was raised in the south and could enlighten this child on much of history. the child's mom is afro cuban and herself traumatized by the cuban "boats".
we are a biological species. we will just keep reproducing to keep the population going, until our minds are given opportunities to expand in other directions and postpone child bearing.
this whole article makes me sick. but i know there are initiatives and what is necessary is for the "white" world to understand. starting to educate oneself about the genome findings about there not being a real "race", the discrimination of fannie mae mortagages after world war two , not allowing anyone who was not white , to get one, even after fighting for us in the military, ad infinitum....these facts need to be known and understood. this is not an issue stemming back to slavery. this issue has been perpetuated in many devious and evil ways for years after slavery and into our current culture still.
remember, obama is only part african amerian descent and he got a good education. there are many very bright children who are poor. they are african american and of many other ethnic origins. eduate them and you have a better world, only maybe not for the greedy oil and corporate mongers. they just sit back and laugh at racial conflict and i have no doubt they will soon have other rich moguls of different colors and including women, who will all also be laughing at the rest of us. as i've said: human greed and human evil. just kill off the bottom layer when the world gets too populated for them.
however, they have underestimated the african american woman!!! they have made it thus far as the backbone of society in many unadvertised ways. they will not take this any more. i see my kids' generation finding the strength to rise and fight, using the good brains that they were given, by a power greater than us all!!!! it takes a while for those hormones to settle. it also takes some trust amongst the older folks to get out and integrate both ways for those who suffer isolation in their homogeneous neighborhoods. i have seen tremendous progress, but how many can agree that often before a victory, the waves of progress seem to bring us down into darkness. perhaps we are just getting the strength to rise up and fight. this fight will be based upon love and truth, very powerful forces. i have seen so many people who get educated, change their opinions in very powerful ways. even some of the worst bigots. there is hope. | |

But I know that the AIDS crisis is real in the African-American community, and the virus doesn't care if you're a poor black teenager or a middle class African-American woman whose husband or "significant other" is "stepping out on you." And African-American men don't like to use condoms.......because many of them associate HIV/AIDS with being "gay" (which many of them are, anyway....they're on the "downlow.")
Not to be racist, or a smart-ass, but no Caucasian person can tell me what it's like to be an African-American woman living in the 21st century....just like I can't tell a 5'11", 100 pound, blue-eyed blonde that I know "all about" anorexia. | |

In Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, and the sixth largest city in the United States, African-American people are being slaughtered for cooperating with the police.....and one of the most popular tee shirts to wear says, "stop snitching."
So all that "talk to the police privately" stuff you're talking is just a bunch of "stuff..."
so then, what you're saying is that the black community can handle the homicide problems there without police, huh?

As for courage, well, I know quite a few family members of deceased people who did "snitch", and they are some of the bravest people I know......

Would you say on the same token that a person who calls the Fox Show America's Most Wanted to turn in a known fugitive is risking their personal safety? If there was a pattern of citizens in your community turning up dead, after reporting crimes they witnessed to the police ANONYMOUSLY, would you still be an advocate of reporting to the police despite apparent risk to ones personal safety? If HIV is diagnosed a sexual history is taken and previous partners may be discretely approached to advise HIV testing.

Posted: 9/3/2008 9:10:19 AM | I can't speak for anyplace else except Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, ahd Philadelphia police DO NOT TAKE ANONYMOUS REPORTS, mainly, because they can't hold criminals in jail without witnesses....so once you file a report, and someone is arrested the witness has to come forth..........
I can't speak the what the laws are in any other areas...trust me, I know my Commonwealth.....

A Kensington man who fled to New York while wanted for two murders and a rape in this area has been returned to Philadelphia, officials announced yesterday.
Omar Sharif Cash, 26, of the 3000 block of E Street, was brought back from Manhattan after a court hearing there Monday in which he waived extradition, said Homicide Lt. Norman Davenport.
Cash is facing murder charges in the city and murder and rape charges in Bucks County.
He is accused of the April 21 slaying of Muliek Brown, 19, of the Frankford section of Philadelphia, who was at a car wash on Frankford Avenue when Cash allegedly ran up behind him and shot him in the head.
Authorities believe the two knew each other, but Davenport said police were still trying to determine exactly what led up to the shooting.
"One thing is certain," Davenport said. "The way Mr. Brown was murdered, it was clear that Omar Cash's intentions were to kill him, without question."
At the time of the murder, authorities were investigating an April 20 carjacking case in which Edgar Rosas-Gutierrez, 32, was slain and his 41-year-old companion was raped repeatedly until she escaped in New Jersey.
Brown and Rosas-Gutierrez lived within two blocks of each other in Frankford.
Rosas-Gutierrez and his friend had left an after-hours club on Castor Avenue when a gunman carjacked their black 1998 Buick Regal.
He forced the woman into the backseat and raped her while Rosas-Gutierrez drove north on Route 1, police said.
At the Bensalem ramp, the carjacker then ordered Rosas-Gutierrez out of the car and shot him in the head, police said.
The woman was later forced into a motel in Lawrenceville, N.J., where she escaped after persuading the captor to go to a soda machine. As she sought help, he fled in the stolen Buick.
Davenport said Philadelphia police received an anonymous tip that the suspect had been apprehended in New York on a motor-vehicle violation.
A comparison of fingerprints taken when he was booked in New York with those found in this area confirmed that New York police had Cash, Davenport said.
Cash remained in custody yesterday at Police Headquarters in Center City.
Bucks County Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc Furber said Cash was scheduled for a formal arraignment Aug. 29 in Doylestown before President Judge David W. Heckler. Furber said it had not been decided whether Cash would be prosecuted first in Bucks County or in Philadelphia.
